Domain Name Transfer Fees - beware hidden costs
      #259753 - Wed Feb 08 2006 02:17 PM

I have just purchased a .co.uk domain name.

I agreed a price with the seller and used an Escrow service to handle the safe transfer of the name to me and the money to them.

They registered the domain name through Easyspace.com, a popular UK hosting company offering cheap registrations. Transfering your domain name AWAY from Easyspace is not so cheap!

The seller discovered that they charge £49 to make a simple IPS TAG name change (takes 2 seconds to do). So now for me to use the domain name I either have to set up an Easyspace account and use them as my agent or pay their £49 to move away.

I since found a cheaper way, if you ask Nominet (the UK Governing body for domains), they charge only £20 for doing the same thing.

So anyone thinking of buying a domain name, consider this hidden cost before doing so by checking who the name is currently registered with and what they charge to transfer it to your preferred ISP.

AFAIK most hosting companies/registrars will charge you for moving a registered domain away from them (prices vary). And I agree, EasySpace are a bit heavy in this area.

I have a couple of domains with them and, as renewal costs are reasonable, I'll leave them there, for the time being. As it is, I have total control over the domain DNSs through the CP. It's easy enough to point the domain to whatever server I have them hosted on.

However, the other domains I control are with Telivo, which are equally reasonable to renew and easy to control, in terms of the DNS.

Question is; is it worth the hassle to make the move (bearing in mind some registrars charge more for renewals if you didn't initially acquire the domain from them), and how long would it take for you to recover the transfer fee (whether it be £20 or £49) assuming wherever you move to is cheaper to renew than where they are currently.

But, what this has to do with ones ISP, I don't know.

You would be better off opening an account with a company like 123reg.co.uk and use them to order any domains you want. You'll get all your domains listed in one control panel giving you the ability to point the domains to any server and also transfer them away to any other IPSTAG and they don't charge you anything for moving away.

You could also check heartinternet.co.uk as I think they are just as cheap with their charges.
