Hi there folks,
just wanted to let you know if you were not already aware of a site that is totally free for all of us out there that require the occasional bit of help in relation to our computer systems. The site covers every Operating System, tips n trixs, downloads, updates, security, registry tips, the whole lot. I also have software areas covered alongside this. At the end of the day why dont you take a peek and see what you think, the reason for the site is to help folk without the need for lenghty jargon and technical wording we dont understand at times. Please sign the guestbook if you are finding the site of use, as I say its all free and was built as i felt it would have been helpful to me when i first started using computers............ Oh and the name is just for laughs but it is a genuine website Auldfarts Computer Help Website
Thanks in advance for you visit and time...........

I tried to like your site as it seems to contain a lot of useful information. However, the layout and colour scheme is not for me as I find it makes everything difficult to read quickly. Also, it's to much like hard work scrolling up and down. I recently posted an item entitled 'Setting up a website' in the 'Web design & build' part of these forums. You might care to read this and other users comments.

To a certain extent I agree with you, the pages on the site do appear a little crowded. I like the colour scheme and the layout's OK by me. The site is easy to navigate and all the links I tried worked. There is a great deal of information there both for new and more experienced users as well as links for all sorts of things such as updating drivers. Perhaps the site is a bit over-ambitious trying to be all things to all people but, on the whole, I think it's a great place for many resources. I don't mind having to scroll up and down the pages! To a certain extent i think you are being unfair here, besides if you look at the actual site its packed with information but the main thing is that it is all "FREE" having used the web site I found it helped me and yes it was dark on my eyes as I am disabled but I go the answer and it saved me a fortune on techincal help ect.
So please my opinion on this is never critisize what you dont know about, maybe there is reasons that the colours are that way, maybe they did the web site for the first time, give others a chance I say. I applaud the builder myself and wish others were giving as much info for free as they have. Web builders can design just for your needs, and if you note another thing is that its not packed with graphics either and thats the biggest issue on most sites so its quick to load and thats good enough .........................

I assume that in posting his web site Auldfart was inviting comments from other WU members. Whether or not he chooses to act on these comments is of course entirely up to him. If he wants use a particular colour scheme or layout so be it. Perhaps if he reads your post he may make it less dark. He can't have been too discouraged by my, or Madeline's, fair comments as he is still adding and updating links. For the record, I wish him every success.

I agree with you. There wouldn't be much point in posting a link to your website here if you didn't want to know what people think about it, favourable or otherwise. Like you, I wish him every success. I would have been delighted to find a site like that when I was a new user and there's still plenty to be gained from visits there. Madeline.

Anyone think hster and auldfart are the same user?
If you can't take criticism, be it good or bad, then don't post a link to your own site.
I don't rate the site name, if I were to come across that name elsewhere I don't think it would appeal to me plus it doesn't say computing/computers or the internet.
The layout seems ok to me and the colours are fine, I prefer a darker colour as long as the text is lighter. White text on a black background is good. However I would advise, that is, if you're still reading these comments; is to put your links at the top of the site, for quick navigation, then in the set topics to have a "back to top" link so that you can quickly navigate round the site.

Could be, I suppose. I hadn't thought about it before. I'm inclined to agree with you about the site name. Out of curiosity, I typed "computer help" into Google and got millions of results. I looked at the first 10 pages and didn't see this site. A name change might make it accessible to more people. Madeline.

When providing readable information for users I tend to find black writing on white paper seems to work best because that is what we are used to in everyday life.
I'm a bit disadvantaged in that I'm colourblind and so sometimes I can't even read webuser magazine properly because they use darkwriting on dark pages so its a common problem not just with this one particular site.
I find darker pages are more useful for gaming sites as there is less text and more graphics.
Playing computer games is tricky as well. For years I had to play doom with the brightness full up on the monitor/tv screen to be able to see what to shoot at.
