I need some advice as im thinking of getting broadband
1. I have windows XP with it's own firewall, is that ok or do i need to get a modem with one built in ?
2. Which type of modem. I have an ethernet port on my computer but i've seen many USB modems and they seem a lot cheaper. Can anyone explain the difference ? The reason im asking about the modem is the ISP ( Metronet) want £286 for their own.

Hi
No, the Windows XP firewall is not good enough. The 2 top freebies are ZoneAlarm and Sygate. I use Sygate because I had problems with ZoneAlarm but millions of people use ZA with no trouble.
An ADSL modem shouldn't cost anywhere near £286. Is that the cost of the modem alone or does that include connection and setup costs? As to USB or Ethernet most ISP's recommend USB because it's easier to set up but Ethernet is faster unless you've got a USB2 port on your PC.

£59 for the connection fee, the rest must be for the modem !!!
Iv'e seen some modems with a built in firewall , im just trying to get my head around all the various BB modem types. Is there any good web sites that may explain them in more detail?Edited by garyten on 29/11/2003 08:12 (server time).

I've had a look at the Metronet site
What modem/routers/filters can I use?
Your choice of modem and/or router will be based on what type of connection you take and what your use for the connection will be. There are a number of companies both online and offline that will be able to assist you in your modem/router purchase. Two companies you may want to have a look at are http://www.dslsource.co.uk and http://www.dsl-warehouse.co.uk.
£227 does seem extremely steep and can only surmise that you are getting a wireless router for that
If they allow it, the Fujitsu FDX310, is one of the simplest adsl modems to configure and at £68 inc filter is good value
Of all the Things I've lost, I miss my mind the most

You can pick up a Zoom USB, ADSL modem at Currys/Dixons for £40.
I use Zone Alarm on a 98 SE, above modem set up with no problems.
If you haven't already commited to the ISP www.plus.net have an activation fee of £70.50 and their customer support is stunning and on a LOCAL call.
Hope that is of some help
If it aint broke , don't fix it
