Hi have a desktop pc with Pipex broadband and I have just purchased a Wi-Fi enabled laptop so I'm thinking of going wireless so that I can use my laptop to surf anywhere in the house. My laptop already has the wireless card built in so that's a start but I'd be grateful for some help with these questions: I guess I'll need a modem wireless router , and a wireless card/usb dongle for my desktop pc - or should the router be connected to the desktop with an ethernet cable?? The other main question is does the wireless connection slow down the broadband connection - ie. when I'm surfing wirelessly on the laptop will I still get the same speeds that I get now?
Thanks in advance

1. Yes, you will need a router. It *could* connect to the desktop by cable and still provide wireless to the laptop.
2. If not, then you will need a wireless card/dongle for your desktop
3. As long as your using the laptop for just browsing, the speed difference should be irrelevant
If you do go wireless, be sure to secure your network. Post up in the networking section if u do get the equipment and need help securing/configuring

Thanks for the reply - I will probably just be surfing on the laptop but usually download/upload quite a bit on the desktop. How are the speeds affected? Would I get better speeds by using ethernet to connect desktop to router or doesn't that matter?

Don't worry too much about speed. I have a wireless network setup in my house with three computers connected at the same time. There can be a small drop in speed with more than one connected at the same time but unless your downloading massive files you wont notice the difference. The speed can change anyway depending on the contention ratio of your broadband connection. I have a belkin wireless router connected by an ethernet cable and usb dongles in the other two pcs. It works really well. Don't forget that you will need to buy a filter for every telephone socket in your house. Not just the one the pc is connected to. Hope this helps
