Network slowed down
      #242329 - Fri Dec 02 2005 04:49 PM

I have 6 pc's on a home network. i am connected to BT broadband 2Mb via a Belkin Modem/Router. Two of my pc's are directly wired into the router and the others go to a Belkin hub and from there to the router. All is connected via cat5 cable. Previously everyone used to be able to use the internet at the same time but recently what has happened is that if any one pc is online, it works fine but if one or two more come online the connection slows down to a crawl and usually only one keeps a reasonable speed. I have run virus and spyware scans on all pcs, tried three different routers/modems, tried bypassing the hub. its as though the bandwidth isnt being shared or something. basically ran out of ideas and hair to pull out!
hoping someone can shed some light?
TIA

Could you say if it is one particular PC that causes the slowdown in the network or is it random?

I presume you've asked yourself the obvious question, what has changed within the setup to make this happen?

You clearly won't get any more in total than your 2mb connection but when you've got, say, three PCs running together what's the total speed your getting?

yep, ive asked myself that lots of times!! i cant see that anything has changed at all. certainly not as far as physical configuration is concerned. i dont know what the speed slows down to as it always says 2.3mb in the little icon no matter what but it certainly slows down to something like an old 9600kbs modem! if not slower! ive had two on the net as i write this and its been fine nut my daughter has just logged come online and even without logging into anything like msn or limewire, its slowed right down. i just know as soon as she turns hers off it will be ok again yet i cant narrow it down to just her pc.

sorry to butt in greysts but he mentions that as soon as his daughter comes online it slows down before she logs onto limewire or msn but does she have them set to log on when the PC she is using is started? because limewire can use a lot of the resources of the bandwidth even if she isn't using it others maybe downloading from her PC and slowing the others on the network down.

I may be wrong but it may be worth looking into

A very good point that. The network traffic may be in the other direction. Seems to me that each PC needs a network traffic monitor installed to see what's going on. Anybody recommend one?

hi, no, this happens even before any of them log onto limewire but i know what you are saying. thing is, when i first set up the network over a year ago, you could have one or even two downloading heavily from limewire and still surf the net at the same time. If its any help, what occasionaly happens is that one might be able to use msn but not browse web pages while at the same time another can browse the web but not use msn!

If limewire is running as a background program then your daughter will not need to log onto limewire(i.e open limewire, click file then connect from the drop down menu)
Here are some network monitors or you could do a google for network monitors

I would have thought you would only need 1 and it will monitor all the Pcs on the network not an expert

yeah i got one but it doesnt really tell you which one is using the most bandwidth. what i did forget to say if its any use is that with all 6 pcs on, i can ping any one pc from any other and i still get a reply in less than a 1Ms so im guessing the problem lies just in the WAN part and not the LAN, if that makes sense to anyone. Im guessing im right in not using ICS on any of these as they all connect directly to the router yes? Im using static IPs on the LAN but having said that using dynamic ones makes no difference to the fault. it still seems like the first one on the net hogs all the bandwidth.

Yes you're right not to enable ICS. That is only for the situation where one PC gets it's connection to the net through a second PC.

The only thing left that I can think of is to change the router for one that can be setup with 'bandwidth throttling'. They are more expensive but you can programme them to only allocate a maximum bandwidth to any one PC on the network.
