Wireless Broadband on AOL

I have set up my Netgear DG834GT modem router and was configured through an AOL easy install download. But I am having problems, it wont connect to laptop via the free USB adapter that came with it. I have installed the software and keeps coming up searching.. The wireless light on the router itself is off which suggests to me it isn't sending a signal out. Not sure how to change setting

any advice would be appreciated
