A friend of mine has asked me to help him out as he is purchasing a second pc and needs help with setting up a wireless network. He has at the moment in his study (which is built over his garage) a desk top PC running XP all up to date. He now wants a new desk top PC for his house which will be about 20 yards away and wants to use the bb connection that he has on the initial PC. I know a router is needed but is there anything else or can anyone reccommend me the kit to be able to do this for him?

Does he really need a wireless connection? 20 yards is plenty near enough for a wired setup and it would also be significantly cheaper.

As a matter of interest, how long can an ethernet cable be? I currently use a repeater to extend my network range but for security reasons I'd like to use a cable and change my repeater back to AP mode.

A Cat 5 cable can be up to 100m long, though most cable installers rarely install them at that length, most install up to 90m to reduce "noise"

Sorry for not getting back to you sooner but I've been a bit busy on other things. Never thought of a wires connection though I think he would prefer wireless. However my old comp which runs win 98 and isn't too bad is in my daughters bedroom and which I'd like to set up on the internet using our main comps bb connection. Would this be easy to do and if so would I need another modem or what?

Same question, really. Wired or wireless?

The easiest way is to use a modem/router something like this.
This replaces your existing modem. You then connect the two PCs to this router with ethernet cables.
