home network permissions
      #240009 - Mon Nov 21 2005 03:58 PM

Hi there,

I am running Windows XP home on both my PC and my laptop.
I have set up a wireless home network between my PC and my laptop and I can access the internet and print documents from my laptop via my printer which is wired to my PC. I can also access my files on my laptop from my PC (I have added the my documents folder as a shared folder) I cannot however access my PC files from my laptop. From my laptop, When I go to my computer>my network places>view workgroup computers, my PC and laptop are both listed but when I click on my PC icon (called Frank) I get the following message:
"\\Frank is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions."

Can anyone tell me what this means please? and how I overcome it?

Thank you

Frank Milnes

is the firewall stopping it? are the files set to share?

I don't think so - I have turned off the firewall (I think) and it didn't make any difference. Yes the files are set to share. When I view my network places on my PC it lists all the folders both on my PC and on my laptop which can be shared but when I view my network places on my laptop it only lists the files on my laptop which can be shared, it doesn't seem to recognise my PC.

Yep I have exactly the same problem - been working all morning at it!

My wireless from the PC and D-Link ADSL router works fine for both (XP)the PC and Laptop into the net....

Can share files from Laptop to PC ok but like the previous post cannot share from the PC to the Lap top. I get the same message when trying to access files from the laptop. Following 'help' usage I created a 'shared documents' file but that caused all the My Documents to migrate to it and I could not then access My documents from Front Page so I have just copied it all back - leaving my shared documents standing alone.
There must be a better way?
A way to share MY Documents on the PC? (without creating a My Shared documents folder)
Apart from that I cannot get the PC to do what the laptop does which is to allow all my files to be shared?
There has to be a way.... would be grateful for some help

regards

Michael

If you use simple file sharing you shouldn't need to play around with permissions.

First go into My Computer. Right-click the drive or folders you want to share and select Sharing and security.

Put a tick in the box next to "Share this folder on the network" and "Allow network users to change my files" if needed. Click OK

Now click Tools > Folder Options > View tab. Scroll down and out a tick next to "Use simple file sharing"

OK OK I can't go any faster! aaaaaaaaaaaagh!

I have had exactly the same problem for a while now (used to work fine) and have tried all sorts to try to resove, to no avail. Just tried your suggestion but the said box does not appear on either my main pc or laptop, both xp home

My apologies. I have XP Pro, which has the options. XP Home is set to Simple File Sharing by default, although it doesn't sound like it's very simple if you're all having problems.

I was getting the Access not allowed messages and solved it like this.

Open My Network Places.

Click on Set up a home or small office network and follow it through.

Make sure you turn on file and printer sharing.

At the end, select Just finish the wizard

Do the same on all the PCs you want to share.

Tried that - again, I think I've tried everything I can think of ten times over still can't access main pc, though laptop can connect to main's printer (though my 98se can't share either file or printer)!
For some background this is a link to my original post. I think I feel a bit like the guy in your signature
