BT Yahoo - Line Speed Upgrade - Help
      #238181 - Mon Nov 14 2005 01:38 PM

OK I try and be not too long winded here. I'm trying to help a neighbour out here, he lives in the same cul de sac as myself and another friend a couple of houses down basically. Two of us are on 1 Mb speed (can't get 2 Mb due to location from exchange). I'm with BT Yahoo and other friend Plusnet Line checks on all our lines from various checkers all return the same result ""Our initial test on your line indicates that you may be able to have BT Broadband with download speeds up to 512Kbps"".

Yet two of us managed to get 1 Mb speed more from luck than anything really I guess. I've made a couple of phone calls to BT Yahoo (Indian call centre) with no luck what so ever to try and get my friend upgraded from 512Kbps. I always get some numpty who simply quotes what the speed / availability checker says and that's the end of the discussion. I was originally with BT Internet (English call centre) when I requested my upgrade to 1 Mb and friend has always been with Plusnet when he requested the upgrade. But my BT Yahoo mate has never received the upgrade and when I ask them about why am I on 1 Mb speed and I'm now with BT Yahoo they say well I shouldn't be getting 1 Mb according to the line checker.

Sorry this is long winded but I have no idea what else can be done for my friend I guess an option would be to look at a alternative ISP.

Any ideas

As BT provide both the telephone lines and the wholesale broadband service to all the ISPs the issue remains with BT. An ISP can only quote to their customer what BT tells them. If the BT line checker indicates a confirmed 512kb and a possible 1mb then the ISP has no choice but to quote 512kb. You got 1mb - lucky you. It doesn't follow that somebody else living in the same street can also have 1mb. Your friend can go direct to BT and ask them specifically if the line will support a 1mb connection. If they say no, then that's it, I'm afraid.

Well, if forty-eight million, two hundred thousand, seven hundred and one people died I'd be Queen.

guess that's just what it is luck because like I say me and my other friends line checker returns a 512 limit yet we got 1 Mb. Go figure

For BT Yahoo the call centre is in India and you might as well talk to the wall, it's just a no go I guess.
