A frined of mine wants to set up a wireless network so he can use a laptop downstairs. His main PC is upstairs, connected to broadband. He doesn't want to leave it switched on all the time so I suggested he gets something like this with this for his laptop and this for his desktop.
Is this right?
A couple of questions to add.
1. Does it need to be a modem with router? Wouldn't the supplied modem work, with the router plugged in from the modem?
2. If he decided he wanted to be able to share files and the internet with his desktop, would a ruter plugged into the desktop be sufficient, with the PC card for his laptop?
Thanks

Those three pieces of kit will do exactly what your friend wants.
Why modem/router? Because the original modem I would guess has only got a USB port and thus won't connect to the router. On top of that, when setting up his network it is recommended that you hardwire everything together first using ethernet cables and then, when it's all working, switch to wireless.
The setup as envisaged would allow file sharing anyway. With both the laptop and the desktop connected to the router you can install file sharing between the two PCs. Might have to play around with firewalls and stuff but it will work.

Thanks. I'll tell him to buy them then.

This has got me thinking. Took me a while I know
My current set up at home is a wireless cable modem/router with a laptop and desktop connected to the router for the internet.
Can I use what I've got to share files or do I need something else?
If I can use it now, how do I set this up?

Yes you can use what you've got. You would need to install File and Printer Sharing by going to Control Panel, Network Connections, Local Area Connection, right click and choose Properties. If you can't see 'File and Printer Sharing' in the list click Install and add it. You will need to do that on both PCs. Then choose a folder, right click and choose Sharing and Security. Read all the stuff about passwords and security and then share that folder. Make sure your firewall (both hardware and software) has been set to allow traffic between the two PCs and then you should be able to browse the network on one PC and see the shared folder and files on the other.

The laptop I'm using has XP Pro. I have the Local Connection showing as disabled, to connect using the Ethernet card. How do I change this to connect using the USB dongle thingy?
If I right-click and enable the above, it comes up "A network cable is unplugged"
The desktop I'm trying to connect is Win 200 and that seems to be OK so far, but I can't tell properly until I've got the laptop sorted.
