I have a home network and i want to access my files from the internet using internet explorer browser. I have 512 broadband (ntlworld) going through a Binatone adsl2000 router to a D-Link DI-624 wireless router. I can access my adsl2000 from the internet by typing my ip address and entering the password but i cant get any further and cant find any info on this. How is this possible? What is VPN and virtual servers, i know the DI-624 has all this functionality but info on the net just seems to tell you its there without telling you how to use it.

You could set up your computer as an FTP or Web Server. This is easily done with a program such as Cerberus FTP server or Twiglight Utilities Web Server.
FTP: For this it is possible to use IE though online ftp clients such as http://secure.isandt.com/wwwftp
HTTP: Set a folder as the web folder for the server to "serve" and then you can acces them from anywhere
