Hi, I have recently installed a Belkin wireless router so I can make better use of my AOL broadband account, allowing my family to share the internet connection. Well that was the idea!!!
The Belkin works fine and all the PC's in my household can access the Internet but with only limited ability. Many Web sites are unavailable to them and some Internet functions on my main original AOL PC no longer work. It seems that although the Belkin has successfully logged on to AOL and connected to the internet, AOL will not allow much to happen unless each PC uses the AOL front end to login to AOL as well... Nightmare!!! I would have expected once the Belkin had connected to AOL, all PC's on the Belkin LAN should have unrestricted access to the Internet regardless of the browser in use, subject to firewall rules of course. Even if I login to AOL on top of the Belkin login, from my main PC using the AOL front end browser (V9), I still can not do simple things like download iTunes. If I revert back to my USB ADSL modem and connect to AOL, all works fine as before.
Any suggestions please?
Ditch AOL is one option I guess, their help desk was unhelpful. My friends have exactly the same Belkin setup using other ISP’s without issue!

Hello smc what you could do first is go to the belkin web site and look for a firmware upgrade , you don't say what model you have ,and I know my model has no upgrade yet available . if that does not work they have a online chat help line tech guy who you can get free online help with any problems on the belkin modem . When I had some problems with a web site they told me to change me MTU setting to 1400 in the modem .plus you can change the setting in windows as well if you wish ,from what I have read this seems to be a common problem . I don't envy you with AOL as they like to do things so different regarding their internet; you only hire the internet from them I don't think they have the right to control what you use to access the web with and what you do with it. How many pc are you using in you're home, I find the belkin modems are good ones and easy to setup but some times you will come across some problems with web sites and setting up the modem for certain web based programs in which you will need to do port forwarding to make them work . One thing I have come across while using the modem if I can't accesses a certain web site and I could before , is to reboot the modem with the belkin software and that does work I am not sure why it does that some times .
Here is a web site to help you set up a belkin modem http://www.adslguide.org.uk/hardware/reviews/2004/q4/belkin-f5d7630-4a.asp
I hope this gives you some help

For a start, have you updated the software in the Belkin?, it's the first thing you should try and do - I had problems at work with some computers not been able to access some websites (although not using AOL). A check on the Belkin site found that the software installed was VERY old, and downloading the Belkin update cured all problems, and it's worked perfectly ever since.

Thanks for your suggestions on upgrading the firmware, good idea! The Belkin I have is a F5D7632UK4. Last time I looked on the Belkin site no upgrades were available, so I'll look again and try it.
Cheers to all who have replied. Sean.

Just spent 11/2Hrs on phone/onlineto Belkin Technical? staff in an attempt to rectify. I can access web sites via my AOL brower but not via Internet Explorer. Model F5D7632-4. Tried on desktop and laptop. There are no updates available at Belkin for this model. There's no option to change MTU value with this router. They have ended up suggesting deleting and re-installing AOL and have given me a case number! I use a D-Link router normally (9months) with same settings as Belkin. Not a problem. (I was just doing a favour for a friend setting up Belkin!) I will not be reinstalling AOL on my system but may try re-installing on friend laptop. Will keep you posted

The problem is DNS resolution,to fix the issue the MTU value must be set to 1400. Click on Connection Type and configure the settings for the following: - Select PPPOA and Type in your complete AOL internet username, password - Uncheck the option Automatic PVC scan, click on OK. (The router will go online - Status CONNECTED) - click on ADVANCE under Connection type - double click on WAN-PPPOA > click on Settings - set MTU to manual and type the number 1400 - click on OK. You should now be able to access internet via Internet explorer via your LAN connection. While the LAN connection functions correctly now with "Obtain DNS Server Address Automatically" in "LAN Network Properties", I found for Wireless I have had to reset it properties as follows:- Go to Control Panel > Click on Internet and Network Connection > Click on Network Connections > Right click on Wireless Network Connection > Click on properties > Select Internet Protocol TCP/IP > Click on Properties Select "Use the following DNS server type in the following order" Prefer DNS as 192.168.2.1,Alternate DNS as 4.2.2.2 > Click on OK
