I have been having difficulty of late making the connection to the Internet. I have found that it falls basically into two areas. I contacted my ISP but they assured me that there was nothing amiss at their end and the problems(s) were all in my computer.
My first problem is that I am unable to complete the connection. Sometimes I get an error message (629, 630 and some others). On occasions I get further and while verifying name and password I get disconnected with no error message. If on quite a number of occasions I do get the connection, there is a problem with not being able to gain access to any pages. It shows that I am connected but doesn't actually work.
I am running Windows 98 and have a very old computer.
Is this a dial-up connection? If so who is your ISP?

Do you know that we're all in line for succession to the throne? Really?
Well, if forty-eight million, two hundred thousand, seven hundred and one people died I'd be Queen.
This is a dial up connection. My ISP is hcinternet.com.au.
This evening when I tried to log on I received the error message 650. When I tried to reconnect I received the error message 720. The third try I got connected but not properly and I was not able to access any pages . I rebooted and the next attempt was successful.
My immediate reaction would be to call BT and ask them to check the line. That's not going to work too well when you tell them you're living in Australia!
Without knowing how telecomms are setup in Aus it's bit difficult but the symptons you describe are all indicative of a faulty connection in the wiring somewhere. Can you get your telecom provider to run any checks for you?
