I recently moved my PC and now my broadband won't work - No Dial Tone....The facts 1. The telephone line works perfectly. 2.The modem seems to be working but is disconnecting more than usual. 3. The installation CD isn't working properly i.e it didn't "run" when inserted, I had to make it run manually. 4. It worked fine two weeks ago before the move.
Please please please has anyone any advice for me, the Wanadoo help line is little more than useless!
Thanks Karen

Technical term coming up because I can never remember what they are called but have you got one of those little white things plugged into the phone line where the PC is with the modem plugged into that.

Where have you moved it from and too?
Where is the BT master socket?
Have you a micro filter for each phone that plus into any extensions run from the master socket?

Hi Max,
I've moved it out of my bedroom ( the phone line has been in there ages) to the next room where we have just installed the phone line.
We have tested the line and the phone works perfectly.
I'm pretty sure the BT master socket is downstairs, Sky is plugged into it and it has a filter on it too.
We're using 4 sockets at the moment, 2 for Sky (one with a filter), 1 for the telephone (which has an answerphone on it) and the one we're trying to use for BB.
Thanks,
Karen
Thanks, Karen

Hi Karen,
Firstly, you need a micro filter on every telephone extension point where a telephone device is plugged in, be it your sky box, a phone or whatever.
ADSL Broadband works on a higher carrier frequency to voice phone calls and as such is more susceptible to poor wiring and signal attenuation over long distances. It could be that the extension point you are now using is badly wired or it has effectively pushed the distance from your local BT exchange beyond the working limits of ADSL. Try moving your PC back to where it was and see if it works again?
If it does then the extension point is the problem, wiring or distance. If it’s a distance problem, install a decent wireless router at the original extension point, install a wireless card or USB device in your PC and put your PC where you want it.
Regards Sean.

Many thanks,
The two filters I'm using were supplied by Freeserve, do you know where else I could buy them?

Hi, Look online at:
www.amazon.co.uk
www.dabs.co.uk
Or any local PC hardware shop close by.
But before you rush out and buy more micro filters - disconnect all phone devices from all your extention points and leave only your PC and ADSL modem connected via its micro filtre and see if it works. Also try swapping the micro filtre used on your PC with the other one you have.
Regards Sean.
