If you don't protect your setup with the minimum protection, WEP, you will even have passing motorists with laptops on their front seat stopping outside of your property, and using your internet connection.
Yes it's that easy! . . . . . and your paying for it!

An unprotected wireless network is like an open door to hackers and criminals. Have a read of this http://www.entrepreneur.com/article/0,4621,322754,00.html

Have a look at this link before putasolutions gives further instructions . . . . >How Do I Configure the Wireless Encryption Settings on the Linksys BEFW11S4 Wireless Router .

You gave the best instructions, fusion

the only thing to add is when you have followed the instructions in Fusion's link, go across the road to the lads house and suggest that he uses another wireless network in future, preferably his own.

And present his parents with the telephone bill with the threat of pay his share or the Police will be called. What he has done is illegal.

You don't have to mean it, but it should teach him a valuable lesson. He may not be able to get on your connection in future, but now he knows just how easy it is he's bound to try elsewhere. It might just save him from a huge fine and maybe prison.

Just as matter of interest, I read in a magazine, could well have been Webuser quite some time ago, that if a bandwidth theft took place, and obviously it does happen (perhaps not as blatant though as this occurrence), should the 'victim' take any sort of action leading to some sort of court appearance, the magistrate or judge would probably throw it out of court on the grounds that if the alleged victim can't, won't or doesn't know how to protect his/her system from 'snoopers', it's the 'victims' own doing.
A reference to "just like tuning into a radio stations frequency" may have been stated.

Moral of the story is, get your system protected.
If you don't know how, seek advice from here or a professional source.

It is theft and you can be fined and have your computer confiscated, as happened to 24-year-old Gregory Straszkiewicz who was sentenced to 12 months conditional discharge and a £500 fine for "dishonestly obtaining a communications service and related offences."

Where there is pre-meditation to use bandwidth intentionally, it could be construed that the act of theft occurs

The original source . . . . > UK war driver fined £500 .

As I said it was a while ago, maybe before or around the time the Communications Act 2003 came into force.

Pleased your sorted.
But personally, I wouldn't say a thing to him. Just let him stew in his inability to use your connection.

In the mean time, is it possible to ask a pal to drive round with an active laptop, and check if you really are encrypted?
All he /she has to do is turn on their wireless connection, in or outside of your house and see if they can detect a wireless connection.

They should be able to do this, but a password to enter the 'encrypted' network will be asked for.

Best of luck.

Pleased your sorted now and have a protected wireless connection.
Can you do me a favour, just double click your icon in the system tray, this one

then view wireless networks, hopefully you'll see something like this: . . . >Security-enabled< . . .

Will give you a little more confidence that you have at least some sort of protection.
