I know many folks are still having trouble getting AOL to cancel their account and are still being charged on their credit cards, sometimes for months after receiving a cancellation number. When I wanted to cancel my account with them a while ago I was concerned about this matter and asked my credit card company if they could stop all payments to AOL and this is the advice I received. Basically your contract is with AOL and it's up to you to sort out any problems you might have as they (the credit card company) are pretty powerless to stop paying out if AOL still insist you hand over your money each month. Now for the good part. Because the credit card company was aware that AOL are prone to demand monies for ever and the problems this causes customers, they advised me to report my card 'Lost or Stolen' and this would stop all payments being made right across the board. Obviously this can be a bit of a pain but if you can afford to do without your card for about a week it will definately relieve some of the stress AOL tend to put their leaving customers through at times. If you are having trouble getting AOL to release you this might be a good way of addressing the problem. Regards. Steve.

Thanks for that, Steve. I wouldn't use AOL myself, mainly because of stories like this, but also because I'm perfectly happy with Tiscali, but it's good to know there is a way of stopping firms billing people for life when all they really wanted was the "free" trial.

There is intelligent life on Earth, but I'm only visiting.

Why did'nt you just pay for it by direct debit then you could have just cancelled it.

I was also with AOL & had heard similar stories. When I cancelled,I also wrote to my Credit Card Company{H.S.B.C. Bank} who were most helpful & said they would "moniter my account" to make sure AOL took no more money. In cancelling with AOL,I also told them that I would be contacting my Credit Card supplier. Maybe you should change Credit Cards,I can recomend H.S.B.C. very highly!

This kind of service or rather lack of it, is typical of AOL. I would like to say a few more things about this company and its representatives, but I have not got the resources to defend a law suit.

These sort of things can happen with any company and it's about time all companies sorted it out. It happened to me with Tiscali, then i decided to start recording all my calls, never had a problem cancelling anything ever since, as i always make a point of telling the company that i am recording the call for my own piece of mind and to basically make sure i don't get screwed again.
