Laptop wireless woe
      #228887 - Sun Oct 09 2005 09:06 PM

Hi I'm having problems connecting to the internet on the laptop using Wi-Fi card
This is my set up
Main computer connected to BT Voyager 2100 Router via Wired Lan 2nd computer connected to internet via Wireless card BT 1040 no problems
now before my problems had a different laptop and was able to connect with Netgear Usb adapter and a D-Link slot in card no problems
Now have a new laptop and it has a built in Wi-Fi card RT2500 but it wont and cant see the the BT voyager wireless signal tried everything I know but cant get it to see the Voyager
Took it back to the shop and they have the same Router and after a bit they were able to connect to their Voyager but not on the internet as their internet was down but it proved that it saw the Voyager.
In the internet connetions the card is showing NOT CONNECTED and when I scan for signal no wireless network can be found I have tried different positions in the house Can anyone point me the right way on how to get around this problem
PS I will not have the laptop until the weekend as it is a way with my daughter and I would like to have it solve by then. THANK YOU

I would try turning off windows firewall first, then, if you are using XP turning off Wireless Zero Configuration service.

Try changing channels to see if that helps

Have you read the manual on your new laptop regarding the wireless set up?

On my new laptop I had to press the function key followed by the wireless key on the keyboard (I think it was F8) which can also look like this image

Open your Control Panel | Administrative Tools | Services | Scroll to Wireless Zero Configuration | D/click | Startup type | Choose Disable | Service Status | Stop | Apply/OK

Well GOOD NEWS I've got connected and it was all down to changing the channel . Now can any one tell me how do you know if you have a good channel?
The signal strength keeps changing and I was wondering if there was any other way of telling? Packets sent? Packets recieved? what is the best way of knowing?
Can anyone fill me in Thank you
PS: if channel 5 is good will channel 6 be a bit better or a bit worse or does it not work like that or are they completely different. Thank you
