i'm using xp professional and when i click on paint it says encountered a problem programme will close. is it advisable to reinstall windows over the top in case i've got a missing file.

That sounds a bit drastic for what might only be a corrupted file. I have a version dated 29/8/2002, size 332Kb. Have a look at yours, and if mine is the same as yours, I can email it to you.

Try this

Click Start | Run,
type regedit
press ENTER.
Find and click the following registry key in the left pane:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Current Version\Applets\Paint

Right-click the registry key, and click Delete.
Close regedit and restart your computer
This registry key is rebuilt the next time that you start Paint.

there is no registry entry only colors, general-bar0 through to 7,general summary, recent filelist, settings,text, and view.

I think Puta is saying that when you get to the final part of his key i.e. the word Paint, you highlight that word, rightclick and choose delete. That will clear out Paint and everything below it. Then when you reload Paint it should start up correctly.

Just right click the whole folder and click delete
