When I click on favorites an empty box with an x in the top right hand corner appears, it doesn't even have the usual add to favorites/organise favrites options, and if I try adding anything to favorites nothing happens - this only seems to be on one user account not on all of them - does anyone know why? (things seemed much simpler before when I was on win 98se )

Take a look in the Favourites folder in Windows Explorer and see if its there, If you're on XP you'll find it in your account in "Documents And Settings".

There are n Favorites folders, depending upon the number of users.
This may not work but it's worth a try. Do a search for favorites and click on each of them until you find the one you want, i.e. the one with your bookmarks in, then copy it to your empty one.

Tried everything but there was absolutely nothing other than the x in the window. Sorted it by deleting the account then re-creating it - nothing is ever straight-forward

Good, well done.
From what I remember you have to be careful when deleting users (I'm running 98 at the moment so can't quickly check). You either have to backup your data or reply no to the message to "also remove the deleted user's folders".

There shouldn't be any problems when answering 'Yes' to delete users folders. In fact it is probably best to do so because they just take up space for no good reason. Even if you leave them there, the only person who can access them is the Administrator and he/she has already got a folder.

Argghh!! it's happened again. Yesterday when clicking on favorites it was blank again with only the x in the top right hand corner - today when I click on favorites I get history (tried history too, that's correct) I think I've got a poltergeist or something!

I can't really offer much help here, but when you do get them back, you could try backing them up, either by "exporting" them or by finding the folder in Windows Explorer and then using copy and paste to create a duplicate set somewhere else.
Once you've done that, if you lose them again, there could be a chance of re-importing them from the duplicate location.
Just a thought. Perhaps it will work, perhaps not, but it won't take up much HD space, so could be worth a try.

After doing a few system restores yesterday to try to solve problems which it turned out were not just mine, they're back - they're always saved in the folder, it's just that the favorites window opens completely empty with just the x in the top right hand corner, there's not even the usual options to add to or organise favorites - it's a mystery to me
