USB Modem / Ethernet Wireless Router
      #221226 - Sun Sep 11 2005 10:26 AM

Morning all,

This may be an old one, however wondered what the concensus was in terms of a solution.

Have been a broadband user (for quite a while) via a regular Thomson ADSL modem...this connects to my Home PC or laptop via USB.

Just got rid of the family PC in favour of a WiFi laptop (as is my Work LAptop) so figured I'll go wireless at home, so bought a Linksys Wireless G Router (a colleague of mine bought one and he's well happy with it).

In a nutshell, the Router requires an Ethernet connection from the modem, however the 'out' connection from the modem is USB. So, is it posible to convert the USB connection to ethernet via an adaptor of some sort, or do I need to change my modem?

Thanks in adavnce for any previous/current advice...this is my fault for not checking out the full dependancies.

Cheers

Why not just get a wireless router with in-built ADSL?, personally I've found the Belkin ones very good. As far as I'm aware you can't get an adaptor to connect your USB modem to an ethernet socket?, and certainly not at a sensible price!.

If you have 'just' bought the router, as in 7 days or less, then you could return it under the distance selling regs. You could also see if the supplier would be willing to swap it for a combined ADSL modem/router as at least they will still have made a sale.

You really should ditch the USB modem,. Because they can draw a lot of power, they are often the source of system crashes, in conjunction with other USB devices. A router with modem included is a much better proposition not least because they contain hardware firewalls which protect you better than software options. Staples are currently selling a Linksys WiFi Wag54G router with modem and bundled PC WiFi card for 59.99. You get wireless for free (even if you don't currently need it) at a bargain price.
