Minor problem with Outlook Express
      #218116 - Mon Aug 29 2005 08:53 AM

Can anyone help with this, please? It is more an irritation than a problem: the toolbar in the "New Message" part of OE is never on display. All there is where the toolbar (containing the "Send" icon among other things) should be, are two right-pointing arrow heads at the extreme right of the "New Message" page. When I click them I get the toolbar displayed vertically beside the new message. I am able to drag it back to where it should be, but the next time I open OE to send a message, the toolbar has disappeared again. How can I get it to stay in place? The "Help" option in OE doesn't offer any help.

Alternatively, go to View>Layout>Customize Toolbar and add whatever button(s) you want and click Close. You can remove any buttons you don't want as well.

Hi, thank you both for your suggestions. The problem is not a lack of toolbar buttons but the toolbar itself which contains the "Send" and other icons, which won't stay in place. The place where it should be in the "new message" page is blank apart from the two arrow heads, and when I click them the toolbar appears. I can drag it to where it normally should be, but the next time I start a new message it has disappeared again

Chris

I think the problem must be that you've got a whole pile of spaces in the toolbar that need to be cleared out.

Try this. Open the New Message page and then click on View, Toolbars, Customize. On the right hand side highlight all the items one at a time and then click on the centre Remove button. When you close, that should leave you with a completely empty toolbar save one Separator which you can't shift.

Close OE down then repeat the exercise only this time add back in the buttons you want.

Sorry, Chris. I misunderstood your original post. I'd try what greysts says, hopefully it'll work. I get those 2 arrows too, they're for the things I want which won't fit on the Toolbar and it includes a Customise option.

Many thanks Spencer. That has done the trick. Now that that is cleared up I have another problem and have just posted a Hijack This log. I suppose it keeps the adrenalin flowing!

Chris

You know your problem, don't you? You keep fiddling with things!

If you stopped scratching, it will stop itching

If I new what I was doing I'd only start worrying about it so I won't look at your HJT log.

Spencer

Hello Spencer, you are absolutely right! I can't resist fiddling - how else can one learn about things? However this thing with OE is a case of "spontaneous generation". I didn't fiddle with it as I only use it rarely, when I want the full header in order to send it to Spamcop and the toolbar just disappeared. Honest!

Chris

That's so true! I've learnt a lot by poking about on various programs. Everything else I probably learned here.

Me too, I have learned a lot here. It never fails to amaze me that there are people willing to give their time and expertise to help us with our problems. Compare that with the "non-help" one gets for £35 a time from ?????$$oft !

It'll be a cold day in Hell when I try to get help from Micro$oft. I can get good, free help here and I try to help other people when I can. I shudder to think what problems I might have had without WU and these forums.
