Hi all, Im new to this forum but read "web-user" every fortnight without fail and would really like you all to give me some feedback on a new website I have built.
The site is Http://golfnerds.co.uk
A freind of mine plays golf and is a member of a tescos golf society and asked me to build a website for him as he has no knowledge of it. I decided to help him out even though I know nothing about golf. The result is pretty good I think.
The site is hosted by 1and1 and has been online since 25th july, we have had nearly 5000 hits with 2000 of them being unique although we did get a bit of a head start because we first built www.tescogolf.com but scrapped it because we realised that bravenet and also using a name like tescogolf was doing us no favours.
The site is non-profit and has cost us so far about 360 quid between us but thats including 6 months hosting and software we have had to purchase. Hopefully as the site grows and becomes more popular it will pay for itself through donations but hey, if it doesnt, i really couldnt care less as i've enjoyed doing it, i've learnt stacks and i'm bloody proud of what my effort has produced (aswell as rob for providing me with info about GOLF, gggrrrr!)
Anyways, I would love to hear your feedback no matter if its good or back.
Cheers and good luck to all the other members building and contributing to websites.

Hi,
Looks like you've put a lot of work into the site. Here are a few first impressions:
1. It might be best to not have the flash intro. They can put users off, and also search engines don't like them much. Details are here: http://www.search-marketing.info/traps/splash.htm
2. I'm not sure why you have set up the entire front page as an image:
http://www.golfnerds.co.uk/main_files/image428.gif
rather than lay it out using standard HTML. If you imagine search engines are like spiders which crawl through the web looking for keywords to "index", then they won't find many on your site, even though there appears to be text there, because the bulk of content on this page:
http://www.golfnerds.co.uk/main.htm
is made up of an image. Search engines can't extract the text from the image... It also is a bit confusing to users, since it looks like a site made up of words, but it actually an image. Or it was for me anyway. It makes more sense for the main content of a page to be real text, as per this page on your site:
http://www.golfnerds.co.uk/games.htm
Anyway, those were a couple of initial thoughts. Sorry for the negative views - it's a good idea for a site, and I hope it does well for you.

Thanks for your reply Jim
I understand what your saying but as I said "im new" and I really dont know where these images have come from. Maybe because I've updated the page many times and published to the same place without removing the old files, maybe old or duplicated files are occuring. Could it possibaly be because I use microsoft publisher to produse the main pages? I dont have much knowledge of html and I'm trying to learn and pick up new things as I go along.
As a starting point I'm going to delete the entire main page and files folder from the server and mt HD then re-publish the site see if there is a difference in the files produced.
Thanks again for your comments

Hi Craig,
to be honest, making your site in Publisher may not be your best option. There are plenty of free editors out there, such as:
http://www.download.com/HTML-Editors/3150-2048_4-0.html
http://www.google.co.uk/search?hl=en&q=review+free+html+editors&btnG=Google+Search&meta=
Publisher isn't really designed to be a web page editor, which may be causing problems for you at the moment.

thanks for the advise Jim,
I know publisher isn't ideal but when I started I knew nothing about html or web building but did know a little about publisher so when i jumped into the sea atleast I had a pair of arm-bands on. Even if they aren't very good ones. Now I've learnt a little I do intend to look at a proper editer but they all seem to cabbage my head. I have full licensed verions of namo web editor, dreamweaver, and a few others. I think the reason I havent tried them yet is that with publisher I just drop things where i want them and thats exactly where they appear. With other programs I see lots about creating frames and layers which i have tried once or twice but things end up all over the place.
I have updated the site a little now since my last post and it seems to be a little bett AND I've managed to get it working in multiple browsers not only IE so it is improving, think its just gonna take a little time.
Thanks again craig

Hello,
I've been browsing Webuser for some time looking for ideas and hints and tips, but when I looked at your golf site I needed to comment. I know very little about building websites, and am certainly not an expert and am amazed by what you've been able to do, so well done!
But, please take care with some of the flashing images that appear when entering your site, there are people browsing the internet who may have an adverse reaction to these flashes, they may even trigger an epileptic fit. I've spotted that the site is being upgraded, so I'm sure you're going to fix it soon. Hope you don't mind me saying

Thanks ellie23, off course I don't object to your reply. I asked for comments and that is what you have done. Thanks to everybody else also for the feedback.
Can I please ask that you take a look at www.golfnerds.co.uk now though as I have made a great deal of changes, well, infact I've rebuilt the site entirely and it look's kinda different. I've done my best to take into consideration what you have all said and like I said earlier, i'm still new to web-building. So, once again, comments Good or BAD please. Cheers.

I'm not a golfer or even a golf fan, but I did look at your site round about the time that Ellie posted and I agreed with what she said but I didn't see much point in repeating the same thing. I've just been there again and it's vastly improved! If I was into golf, I'd be a frequent visitor. You've got a lively forum too. Madeline.

Hi Craig,
well done sir! That's a massive improvement - replaced all the images with real text, and given the site a much tidier, more professional look. Getting rid of the flash intro was also a good idea. Well done again though, your 6 hours a day has really paid off.
Good luck with the site.

if thats your first site, i bow down to you, its great for a 1st timer! i would say however, that internet explorer (with service pack 2) blocks a pop up on your home page, which isnt nice as a view, i presume it may be a 'get a free screensaver' thingy! also, why have a seperate 'email' page, when you have a perfectly functional 'contact' page? especially when the email page opens a new window. scrap the email page, and put the info on the contact page! just a few of my thoughts, but, well done, seriously:) jim

Firefox blocked that pop up with me too. I clicked on the Options for it and had a look at the URL. It's the URL for the site followed by "votepopup.htm", so I don't think it's harmful. Maybe it would be better to have a link to that vote thing , rather than a pop up. Most people have pop up blockers these days and are a bit wary of viewing pop ups. Madeline.

thanks for the input peeps.
I know the pop-up is blocked by most but it is only a link to vote for the site. The "Vote" link is also on the main page in the relevant section and the pop-up only helps to grab the attention of the small minoritory of people who dont have blockers. I'm not worried about people not seeing the popup, however, for the ones who do see it, it is totally harmless and i'm sure they see many more pop-ups that are worse.
As for the seperat "Email" link, this is actually different to the contact page, the contact page is purley to contact us at the relevant address'. The "Email" page is offering a free service of email. You can sign up for free to get your "own_name@golfnerds.zzn.com".
Hope all what I have said makes some sort of sence and yes, this is my first site so cheers
Thanks again to all of you

I understand what you say and it seems perfectly reasonable to me. The site's looking really good now. Just one, tiny thing. At the bottom right hand side of the page where there's a golf ball and it says "BORN to GOLF", can you change it from saying "Was YOU born to play golf" to "Were YOU born to play golf?", please? Madeline.
