Hi guys, new here. Right my website is about the Epping and ongar railway history. Its been up 6 months. I work there but wanted to my own site to be proud of. I can't afford it to be a paid site but i think it does a very good job. Im putting on more photos and history next week. And going in for some more awards. The website link. I really like that site, although i think the font being so large lets it down. In my opinion, everything below the rollover links should be made into a smaller font. (Not including the rollover links)
Also the host you use lets it down, there are free, no-ads alternatives to bravehost. Did you use a website builder on Bravehost or did you make it yourself? If you made it yourself, www.dhost.info or www.xthost.info would be good, but if you used a Bravenet then you'll have to stick with the ads.

I liked the site a lot, but not the Bravehost/Bravenet involvement. Every time I've been to a site with a bravenet counter, I've picked up a tracking cookie. The spelling needs checking too, I saw a few errors while I was there. Having said that, I shall pass the link on to my daughter and son-in law; I have no doubt that they'll find it interesting. They spend a lot of time at the Severn Valley railway, which is where they met and my son-in-law has worked for what used to be British Rail (don't know what they call it now) for the last 25 years. I think the site is very good and if u use Firefox like i do it blocks the adverts and unwanted cookies so there is no problem the site colours are blended well i dont know if the site is a template from bravenet or your own work but it looks good i dont think the text size is too big really it might be in parts but on the whole its good. If you want a name thats unique but without the cost that when some types it in it diverts them to your site then try www.dot.tk it give names away for free but if someone comes along and wants to buy your name then they can but it is a good place to start anyway. Keep up the good work

Welcome to the WU forums. As a railway fanatic from Essex it's good to see a new site about a little known area. However I do need to make some criticisms which I hope you will see as constructive and allow you to improve your site.
First is the size of your pictures. On average they are around 135kb which is far too big for dial up users. You should be aiming for around 25 to 30kb. Try Irfanview for a free programme to rescan and resize them.
You are using bitmaps for your track diagrams. They too need to be converted to Jpeg and reduced in size.
Although regrettable, the E&OR visitor will probably be in the older age group and as such will notice things like poor spelling and punctuation. You need to run a spell checker over the whole site to pick up things like "bettween" and "ment". They detract from the overall impact of your site.
You also need to check capitals on proper names like "woodford" and "mile end".
I do like the muted colour scheme and the font you have chosen is easy to read. As for the adverts, Firefox and Adblock soon solved that problem.
Overall I like your site and it's subject and I look forward to seeing the changes you will be making over the next few months.

Yep, Its going to be completely chacked and loads of stuff crammed in. I chose a custom built site from bravehost which means can do what i like with it. Sorry about the ads, i can't afford a paid one. i have had so far since february 1048 visitors. I'm only 15 so english is not my strong point lol. must go cheers James

You're right about the picture sizes. I hadn't thought of it, but they did take quite a long time to load for me. Downsizing them would be a considerable advantage. I'm in the "older age group", so spelling and grammar mistakes do spoil the look of a site for me. Madeline.

I'll look forward to seeing it. The download times are only a problem for me because I'm stuck with dial-up. Madeline.

It'll be worth waiting for. Er, can you put a post on this thread when it re-opens, please? Otherwise I'll forget to have a look, my memory isn't as good as it was! Madeline.

Very interesting. There are rumours that the Central Line could be extended towards Harlow if the expansion at Stansted happens. Have you heard anything?
Also, do you have anything to do with this site - http://www.urban75.org/london/ongar.html ?

Hello James,
Nice site, I enjoyed looking at it. You have some very nice pics on there and you can prevent people 'stealing' them by adding this code...
( script language="JavaScript" type="text/javascript"> var msg="Right Click Disabled!"; function disableIE() {if (document.all) {alert(msg);return false;} } function disableNS(e) { if (document.layers||(document.getElementById&&!document.all)) { if (e.which==2||e.which==3) {alert(msg);return false;} } } if (document.layers) { document.captureEvents(Event.MOUSEDOWN);document.onmousedown=disableNS; } else { document.onmouseup=disableNS;document.oncontextmenu=disableIE; } document.oncontextmenu=new Function("alert(msg);return false") </script )
Place < > at the ends instead of ( )
Also to prevent the small toolbar appearing when the cursor drifts over your photo you can add this script
(meta http-equiv="imagetoolbar"content="no" )
once again swapping ( ) for <> at each end.
good work, Ellen

Hi guys
Andy, No i don't have anything to do with that site.
And really its a nice site but really my site kicks the ass of any site about history of the line hehe!!!!!! i mean it !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Ellen thanks for the script, But no
I don't use that feature right click disable as i monitor what people are doing with my pictures.
As in i have caught 5 people already stealing my photos.
Told them what do you think you are doing.
If you want a copy of my photos on the site not my pendars you can ask.
I charge 1.00 pound per photo but you must put my copyright underneath.
It's costs money to get things like film developed you know.
If you ask fine if you dont you get banned from the website and you can't come back simple.
But still, if you want them for a school project or say just to put up on your wall fine.
But they are not i repeat not stealing them.
God i sound nasty don't i.
All do have a look and ask any questions about the line you want.
Cheers James
P.S If you want come down there its nice trust me thats if you live near Essex

Nice looking site, but the code offered to prevent theft will not stop 'anyone' from 'stealing' your photos.
If you don't want folk to 'steal' or 'borrow' your stuff, don't put it on the net. That's the golden rule!

I love the new look of the site. I found the pictures much quicker to load and I like the little train going across the Home page. The only criticism I have is that there are still spelling and grammar mistakes. Could of? This should be "could have". Apart from that, it's an interesting and fascinating site, so well done. I signed your Guestbook, so I hope you'll approve my entry! Madeline.
