2 possibilities
Have you got the modem connection arrows icon showing in the corner by the clock?
If yes then right click on it and click on Open DSL status this opens a control panel up with the troubleshooting for the Modem suggest click uninstall(bottom Button) which will unload the drivers. have your Red Install disk ready if it asks for it to reload same
Any joy?
Try this method instead click on the Local Area connection Icon then right click on the Local Area connection 1 icon and select Repair to run wizard?
There are other trouble shooter routines in the Open DSL modem box but I've never used them Status and Configuration are info only. The other 2 might need a bit of help with to understand?
If I understand you right Formatting is serious erasing...You'd have been better off Defragging or Optimising your Hard drive with something like Crap Cleaner which Leaves critical files intact Formatting is only for when something has seriously compromised your Computer, or if you are changing Operating Systems? Not for basic Housekeeping!

Hey Roina!

I recently read about your AOL Broadband problem. The reason am writing this is because I've encountered the same problem and Aol coudn't do a thing to help. I just want to know if the advise given to to you worked at all.

Has anyone come up with an answer to 'Can't get registry value = SOFTWARE\globespand\virata\adslvalue=driver type

I have looked around the web and it seems to be specific to AOL, but they seem as helpful as a chocolate teapot.

Any help appreciated.

Thanks

Dave

If you can get online go to KW: Drivers and download the drivers for your modem
There are several different check the picture and details against yours before downloading .Save this to somewhere on your computer where you can find it easily later.
Next having saved the program go offline ...Open the Control Panel and in the "Add or Remove programs" section Locate BT Voyager 105 ADSL Modem and delete this fully (Do Not choose Repair) Remove the blue cable when it asks (NOT BEFORE)
Will then do a reset OK?
Next, run the Program you downloaded (click the Icon to start) This is the latest driver for the modem (and you won't need the original AOL BB installation disk in future OK) The driver on that is out of date (and will not work!)
All you have to do is wait for the instruction to connect the Blue cable, then all you have to do then is sign on, and click on the Set up button to make a location, the software will do the rest find the Voyager modem and signs you in
Looks a lot, but will take you a few minutes with practice

I had the same problem. Try neo.easynet.co.uk/help/action.htm#m. Follow instructions and links.

This applies to the BT Voyager 105 ADSL modem.

I had the same error when trying to install this modem that a lot of people have had, i.e.:

"Can't get registry value: Key=software\GlobespanVirata\Adsl value=driverType"

The solution I discovered for this was to go to the following location in the registry:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE->SOFTWARE

Right click on the SOFTWARE folder and create a new key and call it "GlobespanVirata". Right click on this new key and create another key inside it called "adsl". You should now have:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE->SOFTWARE->GlobespanVirata->Adsl

Right click on "adsl" and create a new string value called "annexType". Repeat this step, creating values with the names "driverDir", "driverType", "ispSection", "layer3Protocol", "modulation", "vci" and "vpi".

Now try to install the modem drivers. If you get an error that says another value cannot be read from the registry, note the name of it and create it as you did above in the same place. Once you no longer see these error messages you should see a regular installer window. I got this, but then it failed. However - simply run it again and it should install fine as it did for me. If not, reboot, and try again.

I hope this helps.

Thank you, thank you, thank you!!!! I know that you posted this a while ago now, but after 2 months of trying to resolve this problem and talking to numerous "technical support advisors", I decided to do a web seacrh. Your advice was fantastic and it worked, and I just wanted to say a massive thank you for posting this up, you have no idea how happy and relieved I was when my Broadband was up and running again. You are a star :0)

Ref your success, how should I get into registry to effect the repair on my desktop?

(I have developed exactly this same error message, when trying to load Voyager drivers, and after having had intermittent broadband connection on my compaq desktop with windows XP service pack 2, using this same modem.(I'm sending this message from another laptop computer plugged into the same modem connection.

one AOL guy claimed he'd never heard of the problem, others told me the BT system was "down" and another told me my registry was probably in need of attention
He did ask if I'd ever had a rebuild, - in fact the other day somebody organised a "system restore" on my machine for no reason other than curiosity, and I now cannot find or have lost all sorts of files, (music, pictures, microsoft office programmes etc)
I am not computer literate and sense from what i have read that going into the registry I risk to muck up other things

On the Registry issue DO NOT GO There.
Expert country

Instead run something like ToniArts Easycleaner or CCleaner ( www.ccleaner.com ) On the Registry cleaner to Get rid of any tail ends

On the troublesome computer uninstall the drivers for the Voyager Modem click on the "Arrows" and choose uninstall have the "New" driver ready to install Pull out the Blue lead when it says so NOT Before
Before you stat the reinstall Look underneath the Modem and I want to Know which modem you are running? The older Installation used the Voyager 100 and the Final 2 years or so Used the 105 model and if you are using the driver on the disk It barely connects up Have to download the Version on the AOL website

Check to see if these numbers tally

When reinstalling like uninstalling wait for the Message to plug in the Blue USB cable OK Get 2 steady green Lights and "The arrows" will be a steady Green NOT "Training" flashing Yellow

As regard your Files I think you'd like to Investigate something like Google desktop search or Yahoos desktop search product? This will gather information of where many files are located and make a "personalised search" page
Windows XP search can find things But you have to keep running it to access the files

PS If you Have Images to find look no further than Google Picasa It does that and a lot more Besides .For the total Beginner Its easy to work

If still no Joy Try Rebuild AOL Adaptor On the " One Click fixes list" Takes a second to complete

further to this, i have succeeded, though I must say it was by going into regedit and following the steps to create a new key, string etc per the preceding remarks from other contributors.
i did find incidently the exact same key/string sequence in the registry of my son's laptop, where AOL 9.0VR had installed successfully - after I had uninstalled the 105 drivers and reinstalled them.
It would seem perhaps that the "system recovery" preformed unwittingly on my machine a week or so ago, had wiped the requisite key/string entry from my registry.
anyway, thanks for all the help
