Amateur Websites
      #209297 - Wed Jul 20 2005 05:18 PM

For the last couple of weeks now Ive been building this website about amateur website creation, to help people like myself to find out some more about building a website. Ive tried to put as much content as possible with sections on online builders, website building software which is available and search engine submission. Theres even a section where you can submit your own website if you want. Anyway heres the link let me know what you think http://www.amateurwebsites.co.uk

It annoyed me how hard it was to read the links on the left, so i left. I think you should change that.

Turbo's got a valid point there. It's quite difficult to read the white on that fairly pale green background. If you want to use a white font, use a darker coloured background, alternatively, use a darker font on the current background. I think that the font size could do with increasing too; it looks a bit "lost" against the main text on the pages.

Thanks for the comments guys. This is only the first draft of the site and I will be redevleoping once I have the time. Just now Im concentrating all my efforts on the sites people are submitting, Ive had such a heavy response. But I agree with what you say and it does need a bit more prettying up compared to other sites.

thanks again kevin

You're welcome. Let us know when you've redeveloped it and we can get into "criticism mode" again. From what you say, it sounds as if it's going well so far.

Hi Kevin,
Well, there's not much point in criticism if it isn't constructive! You already know that I'm no expert, I just go by how a site looks, ease of navigation and does it do what it sets out to do. Your other site fulfils all of those criteria and so will this one when you're able to do more work on its appearance.

Ive just added a website of the month feature on my website. Thought Id start with ultimatehandyman as it's packed full of information and an excellent web resource for diy specialists.

thanks kevin

I've had a look and I think it's an excellent choice, even though I'm not into DIY myself! I'm sure that he'll be pleased too.

I have tested the code and it appears to be working correctly. I can't see what could be wrong Rob, but I have recieved numerous requests from others through the website. To save you any more trouble I will post your link under film makers tonight.

thanks and good luck with the site

Kevin

Congratulations, Kevin. You've got another excellent review in WU (issue 116), for this site this time! They only criticised the lack of illustrations and/or screenshots. This is part of what they said:

"The content is rock solid, though, and this small site is a useful resource for anyone thinking of starting their first site but not having much of an idea how to go about it."

Well done, I'm really pleased for you. I've given you another trophy!
Madeline.

thanks madeline, just read the review today. I can't say how delighted I am having two website reviews published in a small amount of time. I totally agree with what they said about the images and I am working on it slowly but surely, but I don't have a lot of time at the moment. I hope anyone who has used the site has found it useful and I shall be constantly updating it with any new gems I find such as google pigeons which I had never heard of before I started .

thanks again kevin

You're welcome. I'm sure that they realise that the site is a "work in progress". They'll be offering you a job next! Anyway, well done, you deserve it. I'm off now to find out about Google pigeons!

Ive added a game to the resources page on the site. If anyone could give me an idea of how fast it loads on their computer that would be a big help, especially if you have dial up, and if you have time for a game let me know what your high score is and I'll see if I can beat it

Worked fine for me, loaded in a few seconds and I scored 38050, but my eyes were done in by then!

if, as your source code suggests you have used lycos web builder to build the site, is this a reason that you may not be able to change the colour of the fonts in your left side menu?
the colours are great on my mac monitor for instance, but not on my pc monitor.
just a note, since i dont know the constrictions of lycos' site builder thingy
