slow adsl

hi
i am using aol 1mb broadband conection but my downstreem rate is between 20 kbs to 35 kbs for example a 3.4 mb file from aol has taken 2min 34sec am i wrong or is this very slow. adsl guide speed test was between 186kbs (25.4kb sec) to
287 kbs. Iam using a netgear ruoter with xp all driver ect are up to date. What if anything can i do to improve this soon Iam going to be upgraded to 2 mb what speed can i expect to get then

That recorded speed is far too low for a 1mb connection. Just to prove a point are you able to connect using the original modem rather than the router, just to eliminate one possibility.

hi greysts

yes i can conect with a modem in my laptop as the other pc don't have modems
and i get a download speed of 16 kbs not much slower

Sorry I didn't mean a dial-up modem but the ADSL modem supplied by AOL when you first signed up for BB. Having said that, did you really mean that you were only getting 16kbs from a dial-up modem? If so you have something seriously wrong with your t/p line. You need to get in touch with BT and ask them to do some line checks. In theory, DACS is not on your line as you already have BB but it's worth checking. Also ask them to check the noise levels and increase the gain.
