I have broad band installed, and this is connected to three computers via a router and cat5 cabling. I also rent out a flat and would like to place an extension in here so that visitors can access the internet.
Is a simple extension (i.e the same sort that we have our computers plugged into), going to work, or will I also need to provide a work station?
To access the router an address is required, so I would imagine that a simple plug in arrangement might not work.
Any advice on this matter gratefully recieved.

These visitors are they well know to you? And how long are they resident? How far away is the router from the flat? Does the flat not have it's own telehone line?
If they are well known to you, and there is no telephone connection, you could do one of two things,
1. Set up a wired connection, by running a CAT 5 cable and ethernet socket to the flat
2. Buy a wireless adaptor and attach it to the router. Then they can provide a wireless network adaptor for their laptop, which would then connect independently.
Make sure that you give them the WEP , but change when they move out
I would have thought it was up to them to provide the laptop/workstation.
If the router and laptop has DHCP enabled on it, the router will assign an IP address when the laptop is connected.
Personally if these are long stay residents, I would suggest that you leave it to them to provide their own internet access

Many thanks for that. I would think that it would be simpler to provide an ethernet socket. These people will only be very short time occupants, and generally we may not always know much about them.
Is there any in which they could wreck our Broad Band connection through carelessness? Evil intent is most unlikely.

Many thanks for that. I would think that it would be simpler to provide an ethernet socket. These people will only be very short time occupants, and generally we may not always know much about them.

If they are short term visitors, then hard wiring is definitely the way to go for security
If your computers are in a workgroup then I HIGHLY recommend that you create a workgroup with a name other than MSHOME (the default), and that you only allow them to share Internet Connection and not become a member of the workgroup
The worst that can happen is if they have a tendency to download stuff, as this will eat into your monthly bandwidth quota, if you are on a capped ISP connection

One other thing I do suggest you do for security purposes is ensure that the router admin has a very secure password to which only you have access. This should prevent them from playing with your router settings
