WEB DOWNLOAD SPEED
      #207679 - Thu Jul 14 2005 09:14 PM

Help, help, help. Can anyone assist a senior citizen (well almost, just a few months to go). My ISP is Wanadoo on dial-up. I live in a small village in Staffordshire and initially dial-up was the only connection available. Although Broadband eventually became availble last year I do not use the Internet sufficiently to justify the cost of Broadband. Up until recently I have not been concerned at the speed of connection or download but suddenly, almost overnight a few weeks ago there was a noticeable slowing up. As an example it takes 3 to 4 minutes for the Wanadoo Home Page to fully load and internet banking transactions take an absolute age. Just navigating round these webuser forum pages is taking also 3 to 4 minutes for a new page to download.

When this problem occurred it coincided with me receiving a lot of Incoming Connection Alerts from my personal firewall system (Kerio) advising me that connections from external ports were trying to connect. Most of these looked somewhat suspicious to me (examples are "kowabunga.dialup.pol.co.uk" and "duckdive.dialup.co.uk" and as far as I am aware anything that looked suspicious was denied but I am just wondering whether something has got into my computer without my knowledge and is slowing it up.

I initially spoke to the Wanadoo help desk who went through various settings etc and they also suggested I contact BT and get them to increase the "gain on the line" which I did and they subsequently got back to me and confirmed they had taken the appropriate action. More recently I have installed the Onspeed system in the hope that this would at least return my computer to the previous downlad speeds but nothing so far has made any difference. The current speed is generally around 40 Kbps but can't remember what it used to be. All I know is that it is a darned sight slower and I am becoming increasingly frustrated with it.

I have Ad-aware 6.0 and Spybot-Search and Destroy installed and try to run both of these at least once a week. I also regularly delete Cookies and temporary files but whatever I do it doesn't seem to make a scrap of difference. Unfortunately, although I have used a computer extensively for many years I am a bit of an ignoramous when it comes to the technical side of things.

Is there anyone out there that can offer any possible solution short of buying a new computer. I would add that although I live in a small village we have our own telephone exchange so the thought occured to me, Is the equipment up to the amount of traffic it now probably carries? I would add that this is the first time I have used a forum so appologies if I am not going about it in the correct manner.

Hi Roy, Just a suggestion, Tune up utilities 2004 improved my connection greatly. It's a free trial, 6.7 mb download. The system optimiser program alters a lot of settings automatically and scans your system for any poor settings. You should be getting 40k without onspeeds system

I know how you feel about the speed i have just lost a lot of speed from my BB connection because they (wanadoo) said i had used my 2Gb limit.

5 days i went without a connection before getting speeds slower than a royal mail delivery.

Roy

A dial up connection will get, in absolutely ideal conditions, a speed of about 52kbs. The most important one of those ideal conditions is that you live next door to the telephone exchange! The further from the exchange the greater the signal loss. You say you are getting around 40kbs. For a dial up connection that is quite good. A further condition is that BT have removed any line sharing (DACS) from your phone line and that they have increased the gain as much as possible. Have a look at this for an explanation of DACS.

Next you need to make sure that everything is as it should be where the t/p cable comes into your home. A common cause of poor signals is water in the junction box creating rust and a poor connection. Finally make sure you haven't got too many other pieces of telephone equipment connected to the circuit.

Are you using some software to tell you what your connection speed is? If so, what are getting on average? Have you cleaned up your PC recently? Not with the Hoover but by clearing out all your temporary internet files and defragging your hard disk. If you want help with that, come back to us.

Have a look at that lot first and let us know how you get on.

i agree with greysts 40kbs is good for dial up i never got that on mine when i was on it (an im about a mile away from the exchange) but i did notice that when the balloon popped up to tell me that there are un-used icons on your desktop click here for the desktop clean up wizard it speeded up my connection a lot (dont ask me why but it did).

follow the advice given by greysts and i hope it helps.

but have a look at the prices of broadband they are dropping like lead balloons now you might be able to get a BB connection for the same price as your dial up personally i would stay away from any service that is capped because why should you pay a company x amount a month for them to say yes heres your slice of the pie if you want more pie you pay more or you have no pie at all.

just my thoughts on this but it does depend on how much you use the net tho if like my dad 20 mins a day to check his mails and do his crossword (the cheater) then a capped service will be ok.

The best I get is 44kbps and I'm a long way from the exchange. If I use Firefox or Maxthon, pages load quickly regardless of my connection speed.
That's interesting about the desktop icons, I might give it a go.

I have Ad-aware 6.0

Is that so? You should be aware that Ad-Aware 6.0 hasn't been supported by Lavasoft since Nov 2004 and hasn't been updated since Oct 2004. Get the latest version, Ad-Aware SE, here. What version of Spybot are you running? The latest version is Spybot 1.4. You should update all your security programs regularly, or you won't have the best protection.
