Taskbar buttons in IE normally tell you what task is behind them... but my buttons now show a row of squares (the kind that sometimes occur when you can't read a particular unusual font in a text editor) and the same row of squares shows in the yellow box that opens when you move the cursor onto the label. It only affects IE buttons for web pages, not popups that appear subsequent to opening a particular page (or buttons for any other software that is running). Any ideas?

It sounds like IE isn't able to access system fonts for some reason. Have you removed any fonts recently?
Options to try:
A repair install of IE A System Restore to a point before the problem appeared. Replace any fonts removed.

Thanks for this, Dave; bizarrely, the normal labels have re-appeared today, so I am none the wise why they disappeared for some weeks, but am glad they are back! Allan Hall

... and now, a couple of hours later, after a restart, the squares are back. I haven't, to my knowledge, fiddled with the fonts at all, so do not think this is the problem. Whilst the normal labels were operational this morning, other things were awry, especially Access, which was misbehaving, but who knows if any of this is related malfunction?!

This is a strange one. Have you tried System Restore yet?

There's always the possibilty you have some spyware that is messing around with your toolbars. Have you run Spybot and Adaware?
