I'm running windows 98. The problem I have is when I run defragmentation you can see the light on the hard drive working the defrag icon working but it stays on 0%. If I go to my computor right click on c: drive then properties, the icon says I haven't defragged for a few months. When I click on the defrag icon after 10 attempts it says windows has somthing writing to the hard drive and will not defrag until this stops - but nothing is running! Can anybody put me out of my misery?

Before doing a defrag, windows does a scandisk Try the following to reduce the likelihood of all this happening. Click the taskbar button for each running program and close it, saving your data first. Repeat until you see no taskbar buttons for running programs. Open Control Panel, double-click the Display option, click the Screen Saver tab, and set your screen saver to None. Close the Display dialog box. Open Control Panel and look for a Find Fast icon. (If you've never installed Microsoft Office, you can safely skip this step.) If you see this icon, double-click it, pull down the Index menu, and choose Pause Indexing. Close Find Fast and close Control Panel Shut down any antivirus or security software and other system-level utilities you have loaded. You can usually do this by right-clicking the antivirus program's icon in the lower right side of the taskbar and using the shortcut menu. Press Ctrl+Alt+Del to pop up the Close Program list. For every program listed except Explorer and Systray, select the program's name from the list and click the End Task button. Repeat until the only entries left are Explorer and Systray. Click Cancel to get rid of the Close Program dialog box. Now run Defrag

Go to http://windows.about.com/ library/weekly/aa071300b.htm Additionally, if you are running a Compaq, and have the Compaq service centre program running (the big "Q"), or if you have an automatic widows update program running, shut these down before starting defrag.

There is almost certainly something running. Check for icons by the time (bottom right) and close any down such as ZoneAlarm or Anti-Virus then try again. Rebooting will bring the icons back.

I had much the same problem but information kindly provided by this site and elsewhere sorted it out. Close all programs (either via Control-Alt Delete or by a useful program I picked up from the mag called End It All), disable the screensaver and reboot the big white box into Safe Mode by keeping your finger on Control whilst it reboots and press F5 when prompted. If you Defrag from here it should perform correctly, hopefully. I have Windows Me I don't know if it works in a different OS. Hope this helps.

I had a program I wanted to uninstall and went to control panel/add/remove programs. when I clicked on uninstall a message appeared thus: "you have chosen to remove all shared components which the system indicates are no longer being used. This may cause some programs not to function if they still require any of these files. Are you sure you still want to proceed?" I pressed 'no to all' but it went ahead and uninstalled anyway. I'm now worried I've caused some major cock-up, though I've no evidence to confirm my supicions (as yet!). How will I know if I've messed up any other programs and, if so, can I do anything to remedy the situation. Thanks in great anticipation.

You did the right thing in clicking "no to all" You can always clean up your files later. What it will have done is left the "shared" files. If you have a disc clean up utility, you can run that to determine which files can be safely deleted.

Does anyone know, is it safe or wise to redirect the PC speaker output to a hi-fi by taking a phono lead from the sound card and into the input on the hi-fi?
Tue Oct 09 10:31 2001

Perfectly safe, it's the way my system is set up! Unfortunately, the longer the speaker wire, the greater the amount of sound loss, so you may need a small pre-amp.

Hi Tim. Is it plugged in? Seriously, you must be getting something. Is the screen blank. Do you get the memory test OK. Do you get a Windows splash screen (and what version of windows are you using?). Post some more info and I'll try to help.

To get my computer to start I switch it on & on comes the Tiny Logo. It stays like this until I press ESC once or twice & then goes through the prosess of starting up & loading everything. I can then use everything as normal. I'm using Windows 98SE. Many thanks

I have Windows Me and have a problem with the Recycle Bin. When I open the Recycle Bin I can't see any of the files that I have deleted on the Recycle Bin page. If I click on the desktop icon to delete files etc. it says that I have 33 files to delete but I dare not risk deleting them until I can see them. I have checked the Properties Box to ensure that files are not deleted without going into the bin but that is OK. Everything appears to work except that I can't view deleted files.I have searched everywhere for a solution but to no avail. I have CyberScrub installed and I thought that might be the cause but after uninstall there was no change. Anyone any ideas please?
Mon Oct 08 21:11 2001
reply

I've got an idea. Go to view at the top menu, then click on "folder options", then click on "view" at the top of the box that comes up. It should say somewhere in the middle "hidden files" look for "show all files", then look in the recycle bin to see if they are in there. They may have been turned invisible, but then the question is how!

Long Shot, Ian, this . Open recycle bin, Go to view, click on choose columns, see if they are checked!

Hi. I recently had the same problem and this is what I found on another website: The only option which I discovered was to replace the bin which unfortunately means you will lose the files currently in your bin. You will have a fully functioning bin for next time though. Empty your existing bin and then: Go to Start, Programs and open a DOS prompt and type this: attrib -s -h -r c:\recycled Exactly as shown, observing the four spaces. Press Enter. Then type: del c:\recycled Press Enter again, then "y" (yes). Now do a restart and Windows will recreate the bin. Obviously if the problem is occurring on a drive other than C substitute that drive letter accordingly. There is more useful stuff on the recycle bin at: http://support.microsoft.com/ support/kb/articles/ q246/7/26.asp. This worked for me.

I downloaded the latest version (5) of QuickTime and it's causing me GREAT problems. All my saved jpeg's have been converted to Lord only knows what format and I cannot access them becase I am missing the program 'PictureViewer.exe'. This has only happened since installing QT and I can't get QT erased from my PC. Can anyone please tell me how I can rectify these problems? I REALLY need to get all versions QT COMPLETELY erased from my PC as some of my jpegs cannot be replaced. I've tried opening them in MSPAINT and saving them again but they just save as an icon that resembles a page of paper with the top right-hand corner folded over and the 'Flying Windows' emblem in the centre (My operating system is Windows 98SE). This is how all my jpeg's are now shown since installing QT. I had no problems accessing my jpeg's running earlier versions of QT, which I had installed to allow my children to play some of their games. PLEASE HELP!!!!!!

Go to Start | Settings | Control Panel | Quicktime. Double Click to open Quick Time Settings. On the arrow scroll down to file type associations. Uncheck all the boxes, except the Macintosh file types. Close. You will now have to choose which program you would rather view pictures with. Click the file that you want the different program to open. You can specify the different program by selecting a file that you changed, clicking the File menu, clicking Open With, and then clicking a program name, or clicking Other, and then selecting the name of the program. Alternatively, you can open Windows Explorer | File menu | Properties | Change. Click the name of the program that you want to open the file, or click Other to select a program that is not listed. Note that this change affects all files that have the same file name extension as the file you selected. For example, if you change the program that opens a .bmp file, all .bmp files will open in this program.

Thanks, Iain. After three days of frustration, I decided to run a Files/Folder search for any PictureViewer.exe's and found the QT version of the program. I deleted it and uninstalled QTv5 and reinstalled an older version (from disc) and most of my jpeg' were restored, as I originally saved them. Those that weren't saved as jpeg's had been converted to bmp's, so I opened them and saved them again as jpeg's. As soon as this was done I burned them to disk so that I've now got back-ups in case this sort of thing ever happens again - not that I'll be downloading v5 of QT again!! Once again, thanks for the advice. Allan

You cannot customize the default folder icon in Windows Explorer, you can make a shortcut to a folder and change the look of the shortcut icon. To do this: Right-click the folder that you want to create a shortcut to, and then click Create Shortcut. Right-click the shortcut you created, click Properties, and then click Change Icon. Click the picture of the icon you would like the shortcut to use, click OK, and then click OK. If you click Change Icon, and there are no icons available, use the Browse button to find Shell32.dll: Right-click the shortcut you created, click Properties, and then click Change Icon. Click Browse, and type c:\windows\system\shell32.dll in the File name box, click Open, click to select the icon you want to use, click OK, and then click OK.

The solution is simple: Open up a Word document and 'highlight' the text you wish to print. Then cut (or copy) the text from the web-page and paste it into your Word document. It's as easy as that! I hope this was of some help?

The way I do it is too highlight the text required and then copy it, put it into your download folder onto a word doc or text doc, by using paste.

Quickest way would be to highlight the text you want to copy, by clicking the beginning of the text you want and then hold shift+click at the end of the text, then right click and click copy. Open WordPad (Start | Accessories | Wordpad) Right click and click paste. Print from there

Please can anybody help me sort this computer problem. I am running Win 98 and I had Office 2000 also installed. However I began to experience problems with Office 2000 like it not opening certain programs so (rightly or wrongly) I tried to reinstall Office from the installation disc. It would get to approximately 98% and an error message would flash up. The little box had MSO Help This program has performed an illegal operation and will be shut down. In the Details it says MSO caused an invalid fault in module MSOHelp.exe at 016f:00400250. Another fault after that one MSO htmed also pops up and in Details it says module MSOhtmed.exe A fatal exception 06 has occurred at 0000:00000017. The current application will be terminated. I have even tried to reinstall Win 98 but that did not change anything. Please can somebody suggest something before I do untold damage. I need Office 2000 reinstalling soon for my course work. P.S I tried Win 98 Troubleshoot and that told me something called HIMEN.sys is missing. I don¿t know whether this is connected to the problem or not but I thought I'd better say it. Thanks in eager anticipation Ste Brown

Sounds like your office disk has a finger mark on it (amazing what a bit of grease will do). Failing that, you may have to backup all your data, reformat the disk and start again. Do you have enough memory to run office (I know it says you need less but I have found 128Mb makes it run a lot better)?

1. Utils.dll is not a windows file, which program(s) have you recently(un)installed? You may have to reinstall it/them and uninstall again. 2. Seems like your Messenger is has got registry problems, If you run Win 98 Go to Start | Run | Type in "SFC" and click ok. 3. Custom .dic is part of Microsoft Word. I don't understand how that got there unless you have saved a Word document to your desktop, in which case save the document to another folder and delete the Word document from your desktop 4. Go to Start | Settings | Control Panel | Internet Options | " Connections " Tab Click on LAN Settings Uncheck the "Use a Proxy Server. Hope this helps

Does anyone know how to alter the DMA check box in CDRW settings? I have spoken to the manufacturers of my CDRW drive, and they say that the drive works best with the DMA option enabled in the CDRW settings, but every time I check the box and re-boot, the box still stays un-checked. The CDRW manufacturers say that my motherboard needs the bus mastering drivers to allow for this change to be accepted. Got in touch with my PC manufacturers, and they didn't really know what to suggest. They just say the drive might not be compatible. Have looked at my BIOS to see if there was anything there that looked appropriate, but this is a bit of a minefeild to a novice like me. Can anybody shed some light on the matter?

Mark, To check or change DMA status under Windows 9x, right-click on the My Computer icon on the desktop, choose Properties, and click on the Device Manager tab. Expand the listing for CD-ROM devices, double-click on the item for your CD writer, and then display the Settings page. To enable DMA, mark the DMA check box, restart the system, and then redisplay the Settings page. If the DMA checkbox remains marked after the restart, DMA is enabled for that device. If the DMA checkbox has been cleared again, Windows considers that device incapable of supporting DMA. Go to http://search.support.microsoft.com/kb/c.asp Scroll down to Windows98. In the "My search is about" Click on specific article and type in "Q159560" This will give you more about how to check if Windows is capable of supporting DMA for your device. I would suggest that you print the page out!!! One other thing, see if you can get hold of the latest drivers for your CD-RW. Come back if you need more help deciphering the M$ answer

RE CDRW drivers, I had a look on the manufacturers ( LG ) website but there weren't any drivers updates for my drive. The drive didn't come with any drivers. Must use a microsoft driver ??? I can guess that these files/exports have been deleted during unistalling the other programmes, but what do I do about opening my much used photo impact 6 and wordpad????? Can anyone help? I have tried new speakers, but still had the same problem. I get the same sounds when I try playing music, etc, its distorted.I have a Creative Soundblaster PCI128 sound card apparently, (please forgive my ignorance of the technical details as I am fairly new to all this!!)I have tried system restore in case the kids had messed something up, and I have been through the troubleshooting sites, etc but haven't been able to sort it out. I have also run a virus scan on the system just in case there was something there causing the problem but it was clear. Any help would be gratefully received!!

There is much mention of antistatic earthing in computer work and elsewhere near CMOS devices. The idea is to bleed static charge away from the body to avoid damage to chips. It is important that any earthing cable used for the purpose should have at least 250 Kilohms of resistance in series with the connection to EARTH, so that if-God forbid- the individual contacted a mains voltage by mistake, the resultant body current would be kept below about one milliampere or so, a non-lethal level. Such a resistance used should be capable of continuous working at about 500V or so-A LONG PIECE OF WIRE WILL NOT PROTECT YOU IF THERE IS MAINS CONTACT-IT WILL HAVE THE OPPOSITE EFFECT OF COMPOUNDING THE HAZARD, BY FACILITATING A ROUTE TO EARTH THROUGH YOUR BODY. I would be interested to know from users of such such commercial products whether packaging for these devices describes their construction and/or limits, whether they are well constructed, and to what standards, and so should you! Thanks for your attention all, Ron

Spool32.exe is the command required by your computer to print anything. If it shows at start up, it suggests that it has been corrupted. The easiest way to deal with this is to delete your printer and reinstall. Go to Start | Settings | Printers. Right click your printer and delete, reboot your computer, and Windows should find and reinstall your printer

The best way I have found, but cannot take the credit for - is to download all of the applications off the Net to a separate folder on the desktop - call it Downloads - then you always know where you have installed the file from - then once it is downloaded, opened and you like the programme you can rename the Shortcut etc. I have downloaded enough Shareware and freeware that looked good at the time to fill a few CD's. Once I see that the Downloads file on the desktop is around 500Mb I stick it all on a CD - that way if I have a tragedy I can get all of the programmes up and running again without hours of downloading! Hope this helps?

If all the programs are working, it will be safe to delete them, by right clicking on the icon and clicking Delete. However, you might want to save them for a later date, just in case you have to reformat your hard drive. Open Windows Explorer. Select your C: drive. Go to File | New | Folder. A new folder will be created. Name it "downloads". Go back to desktop in the pane on the left and open it. Drag the programs you have downloaded from the desktop to the new downloads folder. If you have a CD read write drive, you will be able to copy this folder on to the CD ROM. If you haven't got a CD RW, then you may need a file splitter to copy to a floppy disc. Go to this site and click on Utilities http://download.cnet.com/ downloads/0-10014.html?tag=dir Type in WinSplit. and download It is a 20KB download (freeware) Split your file down to manageable sizes, so that they will fit on floppy discs. When it asks you where you want to save WinSplit to, click on the arrow to the right of the top box where it says desktop. A list of drives will pop up. Click on C: Then click on your new downloads file. Then click open. This will save your downloads to this file, rather than your desktop.

Ahmed, I had the same problem recently and found the solution at: http://www.annoyances.org/ exec/show/article04-004 Hopefully you will find the answer there? In my case it was a problem to do with the registry. I had to change the value from zero zero to zero one (visit the site for details.) Be advised though, that if this is the problem, when you have to change the registry value, you may be met with a readout beginning with four zero's that seem not to want to be changed. I think this is a default setting and the actual readout should read 0000 01 00 00 00 to correct the problem. Hope this helps?

Ahmad, there are two possible causes for this. Do you press cancel, when you log on to windows. If yes, don't, but give the computer a profile to work with. Go to Start | Settings | Control Panel | Users | add new user. Once you have created a profile, log off, and back on again. Sign on to your ISP, click the Remember password" box. If this doesn't work, go to http://search.support.microsoft.com/kb/c.asp Scroll down to Internet Explorer. In the "My search is about" Click on specific article and type in "Q148925" It is generally a corrupted password that causes the problem, but this article should give you the info you require to correct it

I tried to get rid of my cookies (following the advice in these pages) but now some websites such as friends re-united won't work. How do I re-enable cookies on my computer so that I can access these sites again? Cheers.

On the Tools menu in Internet Explorer, click Internet Options. Click the Security tab. Click the zone for which you want to set the cookies security level. Click Customize Level. For each type of cookie, choose one of the following: To specify that you want Internet Explorer to accept cookies without prompting you first, click Enable. To specify that you want Internet Explorer to warn you if you are about to receive a cookie from a Web site, click Prompt. To specify that you do not want to allow cookies to be sent to your computer by Web sites, and that existing cookies on your computer cannot be read by Web sites, click Disable. Note Some Web sites require cookies, therefore, if you select Disable, you may not be able to view certain Web sites To delete existing cookies

My fiance and I have only had our pc for 2 weeks. As you do I looked up some sites that contained adult material. My fiance would not take too kindly to my viewing such sites so I deleted the history and the temporary internet files so she could not identify the site name cookies. However, when I looked in the "search for folders and files" from the start menu and typed "cookies" and then search I found that the web site cookies were still there! When I tried to delete them, they would not delete saying access denied. How do I delete the offending cookies from the cookie files?

Hi PT go to Windows explorer, look down the left hand side for the Windows folder. Click it, several more folders will drop down. Look for Cookies click it and on the right hand side you will see all your cookies. Look at the top of the screen and you will see file edit view ect, you want EDIT click on it a menu will apppear. At the bottom you will see SELECT ALL click on it, your cookies will change colour. Then click on the DELETE and a box will appear asking you if you want to send your cookies to the recycle bin say yes to everything. Then when screen is empty close and go to recycle bin and empty. Hope this works for you.

I have a CD/RW and a CD Rom drive. The problem is when I have a Rewritable disc in the CD/RW drive I can do all you need ie read and write but when I am finished and press the eject button it does`nt eject.Iget round this problem by rebooting and pressing the eject button when the drive light flashes. The strange thing is if I am using a recordable disc in the same drive well this does eject when you press the button.Any help would be appreciated.Cheers.

Suffice to say, many CD-RWs have a packet-writing software running in the background (such as DirectCD from Adaptec, and InCD from the Nero mob), and these programs refuse to let go of the CD-RWs in the drive. A quicker less painful way of ejection is to open up Internet Explorer or My Computer, right-click on your CD-RW drive, and select the 'Eject' option. Hope this helps bud!

I own a Packard Bell Pulsar 16 which is 4yr old now. I had it upgraded a while ago up to 32ram. I'm looking to upgrade to 128ram and I need to know if it is dimm or simm.If anyone can help me with this and possibly advise me on where I can purchase this at a reasonable price, it would be much appreciated.

The Packard Bell Pulsar 16 requires a 72pin SIMM, as it uses EDO RAM. The cheapest price I have managed to find for 128Mb (2x64MB) is £56.40 inc VAT + P+P from this site:- www.microdirect.co.uk. Obviously, this is new, but you may want to try the auctions to see if you can get a better price!!!
