Hi folks, I am looking for some help with my playback on Realplayer. I have subscribed to Morpheus and have a few Mp3 files that I would like to playback whilst surfing. However, whenever any music plays whether it be via realplayer or music generated on the web or from my screensaver it sounds like an old 7" single that the cat has walked across. It jumps and sticks all the way through. Has any one got any idea's? Do I need to get some more memory as I currently have 128mb but do run a lot of graphic programs. Please help as its driving me round the bend !!! A big thank you in advance to any one that can provide a solution.

The problem may be hd space, because the reason your hearing the noises, is due to data transfer rate from hd to main memory, its true that more memory is better, and if you are using a great deal of graphic packages, then you would do well to upgrade to 256mb RAM. Check your hd size first, if there is more than 5gb free, then is memory prob. Its true also that diff, players will function diff..so try a few of those too. Hope that helps.

Have you tried using another player (such as MS MediaPlayer)? If it has the same problem then either the MP3's are suspect. Try MP3's from another site to compare.

Morning All, I wonder if anyone has come accross the error message; "Windows Registry Checker - Error accessing the system registry. Windows will restart and repair the system registry for you" This appears when I start up so I click Ok, the system reboots but the same message appears again. If I go through this process a few more time it eventually doesn't turn up so I can carry on. Any ideas what's happening here?

Consider this: Err Msg: Windows Encountered an Error Accessing the System Registry (Q193903) http://support.microsoft.com/ default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;q193903 If it isn't this. Then it is either some program you have installed recently. In which case uninstall it and try your system again. Or bad RAM. In which case, try another stick of RAM.

Please can anyone help? I have been trying to defragmentate my PC, but I am not having much luck. I have a large file in the C drive, and it was suggested that I defragmant it to make the PC run faster. I am on the broadband, so the PC logs onto the Internet as soon as the PC is switched on. To stop it doing this, I have un-plugged the connection to the cable box. I do not have a screen saver on, so therefore there is nothing on that should prevent the defragmentation taking place, but when I start it off, it gets to about 1 or 2% then goes straight back to the beginning again, it never does a full 100% blue line across the box. I have left it going all night, and still it only gets to 1%. Can anyone tell me please what I am doing wrong !!!!

Hi/ First of all do yourself (and everyone else reading this) a big favour and download a brilliant freebie called "End it All" from : www.ajpnet.co.uk/utils.html Whenever you want to defrag, do this: (1) run Scandisc first of all (2) Click on the End it All icon (best place is your taskbar) click on 'End it All' and then 'Exit' (3)Then start Defrag. In addition,if you like a nice clean shutdown, repeat the 'End it All' bit and then shutdown. Brilliant!!! As this programme seems to do the rounds of download sites, ending up a job to re-locate, copy it onto a floppy and in the event of a crash etc somewhere along the line, you still have it to reinstall. Hope I have been of some help.

You'd be amazed at all the progs that are open/running at any one time. Ctrl/Alt/Delete to get to Task manager. End task everything except Systray and Explorer. You should find the defrag works ok. You'll have to restart afterwards. Hope this helps.

I came across this problem after running Rambooster and Inoculate. So now when I come to defrag, I just disable both of these prog, and it works a treat. You will probably find you have something running in the background that is causing the problem.

HI, u may have to do a scandisc in order to find any errors on your hard drive. Make sure that scandisk does a full scan (surface as well as files. This will take a while but may then allow you to defrag when finished. regards Bill.

Try doing the defrag in Safe Mode. Shut down your computer and restart. Press F5 just after the computer starts and choose Safe Mode. Start Defrag from there

Could be a combination of things. If you have fast shudown enabled, then disable it. If you have a sound playing on shutdown, disable it. Alternativly, could be a sound card problem. Got to start/run/msconfig. In the config sys you may have an entry that says something like device=c:\windows\cwdinit.exe/A Change this to read rem device=c:\windows\cwdinit.exe/A Hope that is of some help.

It is a personal thing, like anything, but I build systems, and usually use AMD, they are cheaper, and out perform the pentium is some cases. Whether it is for games or other, an AMD chip, is a good choice. You could go for a board that supports both Intel and AMD, this way, if you dont like the AMD you can always put in a Intel. Hope that helps.

Without even touching the mouse it is clicking here and there and moving toolbars and icons all over the place very quickly and opens and closes programs! It sometimes stops when the mouse is moved or when it is left stationary. I thought it was a virus but have scanned using Norton and the Pc Pitstop website but no viruses reported. I have recently had an e-mail from artistdirect.com which i don't recognise but all other mail is familiar. The only other thing i have noticed is that my mouse is sometimes not responding, could it be this or am i not detecting a virus? Sound familiar to anyone?

I've only got 2Gb so will it simply overwrite the relevant bits or is it more complicated than that?. No paper instructions for the computer or the new disk. To alter the programs that run on Windows startup do the following.. On the start menu, go to RUN type msconfig, this will bring up the system config utility. You will see a tab called Startup, go to that and you will see a list of the processes that run when windows boots up. beware that some programs will re-insert themselves into the startup menu (AIM and realplayer are good examples) to stop that happening you have to tell the specific program to not run at windows startup in its own preferences. do NOT shut down things like taskmon, load power profile, PChealth, or any stuff that is running form the Windows folder itself (you can see what folder they run from if you scrol across in the start tab) Hope this helps

I recently downloaded the file swapping utility morpheus, so I could trial music and other things before I actually bought them. My problems began when i downloaded a file "FF7redXIII.bmp.exe" I had opened it, thinking it was a program. Nothing seemed to happen, but since then most of my file associations went wrong, .bmp and .wma and .zip. For .wma files, it just showed the windows sign (which looks as though its not associated with it), but when i double clicked on it, it turned into a .exe file (e.g. music.wma became music.wma.exe), and similar with .bmp files, but it showed the picture of it in the picture box above all the files and the same thing happened. So, i went to the view menu at the top, clicked on folder options and tried to make a new association. It said "this file is already associated with rnjfile". Since then I have deleted Morpheus, and a warning to people who have it if you dont have anti virus software: dont bother downloading it, you cant be 100% sure if things are safe to download!

I agree with what you are saying, but the clue here is in the filename extension. If you see files that end with more then one file ext the aviod them like the plague! eg. bmp.exe as the file that you highlight.

Since I've replaced my onboard sound with a soundblaster Live 1024 card my system intermittently hangs during start up. I can reset the pc then get the message about not having started properly and do I want to contine as normal, start in safe mode (which I can do but no problems are shown in device manager), create a bootlog.txt file etc. I can normally select normal and everything is fine! The problem doesn't occur all the time e.g. It will happen first thing in the morning but I could switch it off completely, several times during the day and it will restart normally. Any body I've talked to thinks it is a software/driver/set up problem. But how can I check this out. When it hangs I just see a flashing cursor on a blank screen. I'm using the latest win ME drivers for the card. Any help appreciated as its driving me crazy!
Sun Oct 21 13:58 2001
reply

Seems like you have added a new sound card that takes up the same IRQ (interrupt request) as another device in your computer. Most motherboards make different PCI slots share the same IRQ. In general windows can handle 2 or 3 devices on the same IRQ. But occasionally it stuffs it up and gets it all wrong. The most common things that stuff everything up are Sound and TV cards. When added they can conflict with other devices and cause the pc to freeze and sometimes completely restart intermittently. The only thing I can suggest is to refer to you mother board manual (You still have it don¿t you?) And see what PCI slots share the same IRQ and then swap around the sound card, network card and others until you don¿t get any freezing. If all you have is a sound card in your system then don¿t bother, as there is nothing else for the sound card to conflict with that you can change. Note: Your motherboard will quite likely have an AGP slot for your graphics card. If you have a graphics card in there you can¿t take it out and put it some other place, it only goes in there. It also will quite likely share an IRQ with 1 or 2 of your PCI slots, its best to try and avoid using those slots if you can. Further note: To see what IRQ windows has set for the device go to control panel and select, system, device manager, top option that says computer and interrupt request is already showing.

Hmm, how did uninstall or disable the drivers for the onboard sound tiself before you put in the 1024? This does sound like some sort of driver conflict to me. Althoguh its a pain, you could try taking out the Soundblaster, reenabling the onboard (i am guessing that it is AC 97?) and then disabling it totally within windows, then shutting down, disabling on board sound in the BIOS, then putting your SB 1024 back into the machine and maybe reinstalling the drivers again.

Onboard sound is Creative ct5880 (If that means anything to you) Reason I changed it was because it badly distorted sound on some of the games I had. Strange thing is the games now work a treat!! There was an uninstall option that came with the Creative software which I used. I'm not 100% certain but i'm sure the drivers were removed from device manager when I did this. How can I be sure that I'm totally disabling the onboard sound within Windows? Many thanks for your help.

Please can someone help? I have Windows 98. For the past few weeks the system has started to shut down without a by-your-leave. I can be in Word, Outlook Express, on or off-line, any where in fact. The screen suddenly goes blank and the message "Windows protection error. You need to restart your computer. Press any key to continue." appears. There is no pattern to this. Somedays it doesn't happen at all, sometimes frequently. The worst incident was a couple of weeks ago while in Word the system shut down 10 times in 10 minutes. There appears to be no viruses. Is there an answer?
Sun Oct 21 12:20 2001

Have you added any new PCI/Expansion cards like a new sound or graphics card recently? As I had a similar problem when I added a new sound card. It caused my computer to freeze when in the middle of things or when I started the computer up I would get a windows protection error. The problem I found was that the new sound card shared an IRQ (Interrupt Re-quest) with another device and so they conflicted with each other. If you have added a new sound or graphics card my advice would be to remove it and see if your computer works ok then.

I have just purchased a Sony Minidisc recorder and would like to record music off the PC,nothing too advanced to begin with just radio stations via Windows Media Player.I have a Sound Blaster Audio PC1 128 sound card.On the card at the rear of the computer are three minijack sockets. The speakers plug into the green one but I can't discover what the other two (pink and blue) do.I would like to record without continually removing the speaker plug and using that socket.Does anyone know what the pink and blue sockets are for please?I have looked at the Sound Blaster help files and there is no mention of it.I have Windows Me if that helps.

Ian, The pink one is the line out socket and the blue is the microphone socket. If you are transferring files to your mini disc , use the line out socket(middle one)

I had paint Shop Pro 7 installed, but after experiencing a few problems, I deleted it with the idea of reinstalling it from my cd. However, I have had nothing but problems. Every time I try to re-install I get the same error message 'Internal Error 2355'. I visited JASC's own website and did what they suggested - creating a new Temp folder, but this doesn't solve the problem. Can anyone help? For your info I have Pentiun III 700 and I run Windows 98 and Office 2000.

Hi Jane. Did it remove the reference in Add/Remove programs? If so, try deleting the subdirectory in c:\program files relating to PSP. Hope this helps.

If you are using Win98 then try switching off fast shutdown (Run | msconfig). It will boot a little slower but may cure the problem. If not, please leave details of your hardware and operating system and I'll try to help further.

To get my computer to start I switch it on & on comes the Tiny Logo. It stays like this until I press ESC once or twice & then goes through the prosess of starting up & loading everything. I can then use everything as normal. I'm using Windows 98SE. Many thanks

Give Tiny a call (or go into the shop) and see if they can suggest a solution.

What program did your burner get bundled with? It sounds pretty rubbish to me, I agree with the above comment, use Nero if you can.

When I shut down my pc (windows Me) The message "Its now safe to turn off your computer" is displayed briefly then the system and monitor switch off automatically. Does anybody know why it does this? The system can be rebooted normally with no ill effects.

Hi Folks, I have win95 and after recently playing about with `corel draw` etc. I found that all of my own files, located in my own folders have the corel logo attatched to them, i.e. the air ballon with camera in place of basket. how do i get rid of them? I have tried controlpanel/folder optians/file types and selected `image` but changes do not take effect. It seems that something within `corel` is overiding everything else. Suggestions would be appreciated.

Hi Paul. Many graphics programs do this. While I'm not familiar with Corel, if it works in a similar manner to Paint Shop Pro you need to find an option within the program itself that sets the file preferences. Have a look in the "File" menu. The only files that you need to be associated with the program are actual Corel files. Any other types such as .jpg or .gif files should be de-selected.

Sounds like your wav files have got associated with the wrong player. Go to Start | Settings | Control Panel | Click on Sounds and Multimedia | Now click on the Audio Tab. In the Sound Playback, change to your sound card.

Does anyone have any experience of inserting charts in grouped reports? I have a report which is grouped into sections. Each page shows a section which is then broken down into subsections. I want to put a chart at the bottom of each page showing the subsections for that section. However Access insists on showing all the sections and subsections on each page. When I try to link the master and child fields I get a message saying I can't link these fields in an unbound object, but surely if I am basing my chart on the same table that the main report is based on it must be a bound object? Any ideas?

Though I don't think a free memory tool is the answer here, it will help, but I DO NOT suggest MemTurbo. It is wasteful of resources itself, and has a weird little help buddy, a sort of male cheerleader thing. Most disturbing. :) I suggest RamPage. It's free, open source, easy, and unobtrusive. www.jfitz.com/software/RAMpage/

If your computer is pretty slow, then there's this software you can download to speed it up: It's called memturbo, and you can download a trial from www.memturbo.com what it does is reorganize your memory, and also puts memory that is not being used back into the main memory supply.

Hi Brian. Memory is erased when the PC is switched off. It is the hard disk that possibly needs reorganising or defragging as it's known. Right-click on the drive C in explorer and select tools then defrag. Takes a while if it is a big disk. Reboot and see if that improves matters.

I am running MS Office 2000 on an NT PC. When I open Word and click FILE>OPEN or FILE>SAVE AS it now takes 6 minutes to respond and the response time is getting longer. If I double-click Word files they open straight away and this problem doesn't occur with any of my other programs. Any ideas?

This is a problem that Microsoft has identified as a problem. Go to http://search.support.microsoft.com/kb/c.asp Scroll down to Windows NT. In the "My search is about" Click on specific article and type in "Q163525" for a possible fix.

More networking problems. On startup, two computers come up with the following message: "The system has detected a conflict for IP address with the system having hardware address 00:04:76:16:4D:70. The interface has been disabled". The machines now cannot access the internet. Nobody has knowingly made any changes to any settings. Can anyone help? Thanks.

Sian, this is a common problem with NT4. 2 different clients, by chance, have used the same XID. The transaction ID (XID) is used to track each configuration sequence. Any response to a DHCP Discover packet should reference the same XID. Because 2 clients did send a DHCP Discover with the same XID at nearly the same time, the DHCP initialization sequence (Discover - Offer - Request - Ack) was completed by both in the same way, resulting in the error messages above. If there is still one computer on your network with access to the net, go to the Microsoft website and go to Downloads. Download the service packs to a shared drive and install from there.

Thanks for the tips. However, one of the affected machines uses Windows ME and the other Windows 98. Does this complicate the fixing process? Slightly off topic, but on my home computer when on the internet any CD in the drive tends to try and start up by itself every 15 minutes or so. Is there a simple explanation for this (and can it be stopped), or could it be someone attempting to hack into my machine? I have Zone Alarm installed and running in the background. (Lots of red alerts though)

Might be worth doing an anti virus scan to see if a trojan has got itself installed... however maybe the simplest thing to do would be to remove any discs in the drive while your surfing. and reducing the number of programs running in the background. As for the network problem, it shouldn't matter which version of windows is running as I would imagine that they will both be using TCP/IP to log on

Go to Start | Search ( or find) files and folders | Type in *. pwl. Delete all that you find and reboot your computer. When the computer starts up again, it will prompt you for a new password.

No, but if you want the PC to remember your password for the Internet, then you will need to create your profile when you log on again.
