Occasionally when I shut my PC down it either displays"windows is now shutting down" and hangs-up or I am getting a message "a fatal error has occured" with a string of letters and numbers. I then have to physically turn it off with the switch at the rear of the tower. When I run any maintenance programmes, nothing is detected. My PC is a compaq presario PII running Windows 98. Here I am again with another cry for help. Many thanks to all who have answered them in the past (especially Ian, who does regularly!). I am using Windows 98. When I bought my computer it came with the following virus protection programs installed:Trend Pc-cillin 98 (version PCCWIN98 and IOMON 4.07, according to the "about" info.), also InoculateIT (version 5.2.9.0.). To start with, being new to the computer world I don't really know why there are two programs. Secondly, how good are these programs? Is there any where they have been rated? Lastly, I see Web User has given space to the free AGV Anti-Virus package with info about setting it up (Issue 20)-would I pehaps be better off with the single AVG package? Any thoughts or info anyone would care to share with me would be gratefully received. Denis Burgess - Telford - Tue Jan 15 15:01 2002 reply
If you've got InoculateIt, keep that!! You only need one AV prog and InoculateIt is one of the best with far more regular updates. If you hadn't got that, I would have recommended that you get AVG, the only downside is it's not so frequent updates. Uninstall Pc-cillin, very cumbersome and heavy on system resources Iain Wolstencroft - Accrington - Tue Jan 15 16:01 2002 reply

You may wsant to slow your computer down :O. Some games aren't designed for todays speed merchants. Open Control Panel and doubleclick the System icon (or right click My Computer and select Properties from the shortcut menu). When you see the System Properties sheet, select the Performance tab and then click the Graphics... button. In a moment, you'll see the Advanced Graphics Settings dialog box...". Hardware Acceleration slider will be set to Full by default. When the system uses this setting, Windows enables all its graphics hardware acceleration features. What this means is that Windows depends on the display adapter to handle the majority of the graphical operations and sends information pertaining to those operations to the display adapter as fast as it can. However, if your graphics hardware has trouble receiving information at such high rates of speed or is incapable of performing the operations Windows expects, your system will frequently lock up or crash. You will need your Windows Disk to rectify this. The mmdiag is related to the Multimedia section of Windows and has probably been corrupted. Go to Start | Settings | Control Panel | Add/Remove Programs | Windows Setup tab. Remove all Multimedia and reboot. Now do the same as above, but add Multimedia. Now reboot. I had a similar problem to and i hope this will solve your problem. Goto your CONTROL PANEL and select DISPLAY, click on the SETTINGS tab and seewhat your screen area size is. I have a 17" monitor and my settings are at 1024 by 768 pixels i think this is standard regardless the size of your monitor. If your settings are not this then slide the indicator on the settings area untill you get 1024 by 768 then press the TAB key twice and then press enter(this is because you are unable to click with the mouse). Once you have entered you might be prompted for a screen test just OK and you will see different colours and it will ask you if you saw them , again just OK that and hopefully that should solve your problem. Some of my programs have stopped working - I get an error saying file SCRNCAM.EXE cannot be located. Anyone help? Michael Brown - Leeds - Fri Jan 11 19:13 2002 reply
This is a program called ScreenCam player. If this was a demo version or one you're no longer using, you may still have it in your start up group. To test this go to start, run and type msconfig then press ok. Go to the start up tab and if it's listed as running at start up, then click the box to remove the tick, as this will disabled the program from running in the background. If it's a program you no longer user, then you might want to uninstall it from control panel, add/remove programs. Caroline Lyons - Wiltshire - Fri Jan 11 20:56 2002 reply

You may need to replace some of all of the following *.vxds: configmg.vxd configuration manager for the motherboard; ntkern.vxd kernel driver used for the universal host controller; vcomm.vxd communications driver; vdd.vxd video drive device; vdmad.vxd DMA controller driver; vflatd.vxd video flat-frame buffer virtual device; vmouse.vxd mouse driver The specific VxDs are in the *.CAB files on the Windows installation CD. Some are specific to their own version of Win9x. Otherwise the installation is straightforward. WIN98: Look in Win98_47.cab and Win98_48.cab WIN98 SE: Look in Win98_53 and Win98_54, or Win98_50 and Win98_51 WIN ME: Look in Win_20.cab and Win_19.cab 1. Pop in your installation CD (and Exit the Setup, if necessary) 2. Open Windows Explorer and highlight the CD drive (left pane). 3. Next right-click (right pane) the correct *.cab and select View 4. Now highlight and right-click the *.vxd file you want. Select Extract For Win98 or Win98SE extract to \Windows\System\VMM32 and \Windows\System For ME use \System\VMM32 and \System32\Drivers (not confirmed) 5. Close Windows normally, and Reboot 6. Can I ask for please from anyone who has installed Virus Catcher from www.vcatch.com There are very few reviews on this programme, but one of them did suggest that it was spyware and to keep away from it. Terry, I tried Virus Catcher some time ago and had a few problems with it. When I ran Trend Micro's "House Call" on my system, after installing Virus Catcher, it said I had 3 copies of a NIMDA variant in my download folder...naturally, I deleted the appropriate files. I am not convinced that the files were actually infected, but I wasn't prepared to take the chance...I uninstalled Virus Catcher!! If you have read the reviews, then you may have gathered that VC is a good idea, but it is not there yet. Sadly, InnoculatePE is no longer free for personal use, however, AVG (from Crisoft.com) is, and as a backup to that, you can periodically run HouseCall (it's updated more frequently than AVG), although, HouseCall is a detector/remover and NOT a shield. DAvid, you don't say which operating system you've got, but if it is Windows98, try putting a shortcut on your desktop (or in a folder, if you wish) to the following: c:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\MSINFO\MSINFO32,EXE (I suggest you "browse" to this file). Having found it, double click on it and select "Tools" on the menu bar; one of the options is Internet Explorer Repair Tool , it will allow you to try and repair your existing setup or to restore a previous configuration if it exists. Alternatively, go to www.microsoft.com/ie/downloads and either look for IE5.5 or download IE6 which is now available. In addition to installing IE, it will setup a folder called "Windows Update Setup Files" where you can reload IE (and Outlook Express) at any time in the future should you need to. Have a look on the installation disk that came with your CD-RW, even if the device installed from Windows own driver database. There should be software on the disk which will allow you to format CD-R and CD-RW so you can copy data to them, much like a floppy disk (only about 600 times bigger). If there isn't, you might try contacting the manufacturer of the CD-RW drive. For music, you'll probably have to continue to use Nero, it seems to be a registration problem, in that Media Player does not recognise your particular model. Have you got the latest download of Media Player? Also, you might look at Ashampoo.com and see if any of their products, such as CD Audio or Media Player+ will do the job. My daughter had similar problems until she installed the device-specific software from the installation disk and the version of Nero provided with the hardware. The uninstaller is obviously looking for this file, which you've probably deleted manually or is deleted if you use a third party system cleaner. For a better uninstall, you're better reinstalling the software & uninstalling immediately, as this way you'll be prompted if there are any shared dll's, minimising the risk of other programs becoming unusable too. Dear Gordon, A blank CD must be formatted before you can save your files on to it (just like floppies). I use Iomega ZipCD's Adaptec DirectCD programme, so can not vouch for Nero, but I assume that CD's being used for data (Video clips, digital photographs and text files - as opposed to audio files) will need formatting first, whichever programme is used. Also, a CD can only be viewed in the CD-ROM drive once it has been closed (by Nero,in your case). Until the CD has been closed it can only be read in your CD-RW drive. I am assuming that you are trying to view the unclosed CD in your PC's CD-ROM drive using Media Player? Try placing the CD in your CD-RW drive and see if Media Player will play the CD from there. Good luck... Regards, Rod Shinkfield Rod Shinkfield - Chorley - Sun Jan 13 14:03 2002 reply

i received the same hoax some time ago but didn't realise it was a hoax at the time and had quite a job putting things right after deleting the file. i was given what i considered excellent advice on here to repair my OS part of which was never delete an exe. file unless told to by an impecably reliable source. malcolm whiley - boston , lincs - Mon Dec 31 19:07 2001 reply
I too have received the same email David and am after advice what to do. The symbol does look out of place compared to the other command files on hard drive, but my anti-virus does not detect it as a virus. Can any other people offer their advice? David Crane - Sudbury - Tue Jan 01 00:45 2002 reply
Happy new year, Davids!! Delete the e-mail and ignore it, it is a hoax. Once you have deleted it, go to this site: http://antivirus.about.com/ library/weekly/aa060701a.htm It gives you information on how to restore the suflnbk.exe should you have deleted it. Read the rest of the article it is very informative. Iain Wolstencroft - Accrington - Tue Jan 01 11:02 2002 reply

Can someone please tell me how to copy CD Roms of programmes using my CDR Drive. I can copy music CDs using Musicmatch but I don't know how to copy games etc. Dave Fernandez - Driffield - Sun Dec 30 11:41 2001 reply
Depending on Copyright restrictions (and please make sur you comply with these restrictions!), the best thing to do is open up your copying software program and follow the steps listed there. I use Nero software and am given the option of how to compile discs. If it's just a straight copy, then click on the copy icon and select copy 'off the fly'. This will take longer to copy but means that some data that can be overlooked when copying 'on the fly' (a much quicker way to make direct copies) is scanned and your resultant disc should be a good reproduction/copy of the original. Try using Nero? You can download a trial version from www.download.com by searching for it. Rajiv Parmar - London - Sun Dec 30 12:32 2001 reply
hello all , sorry if this is a daft question but i'm after a bit of advice. i have a pentium III 1000mhz , 640mb , 49gb h/drive . i noticed that all the new pc's advertized over christmas seem to have far greater processors . so the question is can you upgrade a processor yourself and is it an expensive job . it's a reasonably new machine running Windows ME but i'd like to keep reasonably upto date. many thanks in advance. malcolm malcolm whiley - boston , lincs - Sat Dec 29 08:13 2001 reply
You don't say which Motherboard you have in your system, and you will need know to make sure which Socket/Slot and the maximum capability is supported, and you will almost certainly need a new cooling fan. Other than that, it is a relatively simple task. Turn off your computer, earth yourself. Take the fan off, lift the lever on the CPU seat. Remove the CPU, lifting straight up. Try and touch only the edge of the CPU. Gently place the new CPU in the seat, making sure that the pins are aligned correctly (This should be easy as the CPU is "keyed" ie it can only go in one way) Press down the lever to lock it into place. Apply thermal paste. Attach Fan. Screw up case. Plug In. Boot up. To find out which motherboard you have in your system, go to http://www.belarc.com and click the Personal PC Audit link. This will download a small application that tells you all need to know about your PC Iain Wolstencroft - Accrington - Mon Dec 31 12:43 2001 reply
thanks Iain , according to Belarc the main circuit board is; BOARD;Gigabyte Technology Co.,Ltd 6VXC7-4X 1.0 BUS CLOCK; 133mhz BIOS; American Megatrends Inc. 62710 10/02/2000 doesn't mean a great deal to me but i hope that's the info you needed . is it an expensive item and what size would you recommend going up to? thanks in advance , malcolm malcolm whiley - boston , lincs - Mon Dec 31 14:37 2001 reply
Malcolm, having looked at the spec of your motherboard, it appears that it has reached it's maximum potential already. That doesn't always mean that it has. Many manufacturers understate their boards capabilities in an effort to persuade you to buy a new one. However, you are unlikely to be able to go above a 1.5Mz CPU. In which case, it would not be economically viable in terms of cost vs increase in speed. You would need to change your board to one which is Pentium 4 compatible to go beyond this. So you would have that cost on top. If you wish to improve the performance of your computer, you might want to thinking about "tweaking" your computer. If you type TWEAK in any search engine, you will find a myriad of sites. And as a last resort, you could think about "overclocking", but to be fair, oit is a lot of hard work for very little result Iain Wolstencroft - Accrington - Tue Jan 01 11:12 2002 reply

You could try CLONE CD. It doesnt support all cdr/w or cdrom, but it will tell you once you have run it, if it will nor not. If it doesnt, then just uninstall it. future - Fri Feb 01 02:20 2002
