I am considering buying a CD Rewriter. Is there anything I should be looking out for to get the best purchase. What is the difference between CD-RW and CD-R?What are the best brands?Internal or external?Any information gratefully received.

CD-RW stands for Compact Disc rewriteable and means that the blank cd's that you buy can be recorded onto as many times as you want. CD-R or Compact Disc Recordable only allow recording once. Internat drives are generally cheaper but they do mean you'll have to get into the innards of your PC. External drives are more expensive but can be connected by USB and can be up and running in moments.

When i switch on my pc i recieve an message saying, "windows registry checker has found a problem with your program files. Windows will restart and correct the error" I was wondering why this is happening and how to stop this from happening.

Goto start/run and type in scanreg press ok, this will check your registery to see if there are any errors, if there are, then it will ask if you want to use the back up copy, this will work as long as the backup copy is ok, however, you may have to install programmes that you installed after the last time the registery was backed up..if all goes well, and the back up works, I would suggest that you backup the registery after each successful installation of your software.

Last week I bought a second hand base - Dell, with DVD drive and CDRW. It was working perfectly in the owner's home, and I took it home by taxi. I connected it to my monitor, keyboard etc, and once booted up, the DELL page came up, followed by Microsoft ME, then NOTHING! The picture just rolled and rolled. With a bit of fiddling about I managed to get the computer running in safe mode, but that's not what I bought it for...I want to be able to use the drives. Please some of you buffs out there, help me!

First of all, run Scandisk, then defrag. Also, after that, try runnning Scanreg, to see if the registry is corrupt. Depending on how you transported the base unit, it is possilbe that the hard drive heads were knocked, and this could have caused them to land on data thereby corrupting it. So run these tests first, if that doesnt work, then try doing system restore, from a working previous backup.

Thank you for your suggestion, which I've tried. Everything appears to be in order. I should have mentioned that when I first boot PC, holding down control, I get a lot of info, the last line of which states "ERROR. 0210 stuck key". Is this the problem, and how do I rectify it? (my hair is turning greyer by the minute!)
edmarie - Aberdeen - Sun Feb 17 08:53 2002
reply

The reason that your getting the error 0210 stuck key, is because you are holding down the ctrl key, while the computer is trying to boot, the BIOS does a POST...Power On Self Test, and it tests for things like stuck keys, and as your holding down the ctrl key, it thinks the key is stuck. The information you are seeing, is two things, the BIOS info, ie, what you have in your puter that the BIOS knows about, and the other is what drivers and and other programmes that are being launched.

I'm most grateful for your help - would reformatting the hard drive and re-installing Windows 98 or ME, be any good? Does the fact that I am able to use Word, Access etc in safe mode mean that there isn't anything TOO wrong with my machine, or am I clutching at straws?
Edmarie - Aberdeen - Sun Feb 17 23:26 2002
reply

If you did the scanreg, that should say if the registery is corrupt, also, you can run SFC and see if that finds any corrupt files. You can run both these programmes from safe mode, start/run then type either name, and run one of them at a time. Now, as for reinstalling 98se or ME, you must make sure that you have the appropriate mother board drivers, video drivers, sound drivers, and modem drivers. If you do not have these, then there could be problems, however, you maybe able to get the said drivers from the DELL website, and also, 98se or even ME may have them already.

When attempting to open my inbox I got the dreaded illegal operation....will be shut down. The dtails were MAPIST32 caused invalid page fault in module kernel 32dll @ 017f:bff7b9a6. Any help will be appreciated. Thanks. P.S. how can I find out which version of IE I am running.
Keith - Oldham - Fri Feb 15 12:55 2002
reply

Keith, I'm hoping that the error message is for MAPISP32 rather than Mapist32. If I am right, then this is caused by installing Messenging client on a clean hard drive or you have recently installed a messenging program other than MSN messenger, such as ICQ.

To solve the problem, Restart your computer to ensure that the Windows Messaging program is no longer in memory. Rename the Mapi32.dll file in the Windows\System folder to Mapi32.lld. To do this, right click on the Mapisp file, and click rename, change the file extension after the stop from dll to lld. Reinstall the Windows Messaging client from the Tools\Oldwin95\Message\Us folder on the Windows 98 Second Edition CD-ROM. Restart your computer. If you are still having problems, go to Dr D's and type in MAPI32. Choose the correct download for your version of Windows and save to C:\Windows\System Reboot your computer.

You can find out which version of IE you have installed by opening IE and clicking Help then About>

I'm having problems restarting a laptop. (Running Windows ME, 6MB HD, 64MB memory, 600MHz Celeron). Instead of restarting as normal, it just 'hangs' with a black screen with little white dots all over it. There's a single flashing cursor in the middle but you can't type anything and nothing happens when you press Enter. The only way I can restart the machine at this point is by switching it on and off, and then by going through Scandisk. Apart from this the machine seems fine. Can anyone help?

Alan, Scandisk only generally does one attempt, unless you modify the ini file, and do the test from DOS mode. The article that Iain suggests, tells you how to do this. However, I prefer to use NORTON DISK DOCTOR, but if you do not have that, then Scandisk will do. If Scandisk does find any errors, and it marks them bad, the message should stop, but, I suggest that you run Scandisk on a daily basis for a few weeks, to rule out physical damage.

Are you doing Scandisk and checking the Thorough button on the left?
Iain Wolstencroft - Accrington - Thu Feb 14 06:01 2002
reply

Hello. It is possible that your hard drive has sustained physical damage, in which case the only real alternative is to buy a new one. However, before that is decided, have you run a virus check? Some viruses can cause error messages such as the Read/Write error message your gettig now. You were correct to run Scandisk and Defrag in safe mode, the reason for this is because when in normal mode, there are programmes that are running, and access the hard drive, therefore the conetents change, and so scandisk and defrag restart, where as in safe mode, you usually only have explorer and systray running, and so scandisk and defrag can run correctly. Now, after you have run a virus check, and cured any viruses found, run Scandisk again, thorough. If that fails, then if your running windows 95/98, start your puter, and press F8 a menu will appear, giving you a few options, choose command prompt, then when you see the c:type this. scandisk c:/nosave/nosummary/surface/autofix and press return/enter. This will scan you drive and then do a surface scan, and if it can,it will fix the errors and mark the block bad, so that data cannot be written to it again. However, it is possible that your data is already corrupt, and so, you may have to re-install windows, and all necessary software/drivers that you have. Sadly, there isnt a lot you can do to get this data back, but scandisk will try to move any data that is good to a new block. It may take a long time for scandisk to complete, depends on your hard drive capacity, but usually on a soak test I would leave it on all night, although, you shouldnt need to for that long.

I think that when you have re-installed all your software again, and Mcaffee, make a rescue disk, then if you encounter a virus again, you can use the rescue disk to boot with, and clear the virus, without having to FDISK and FORMAT again. You could also try using a different virus programme, such as Inoculate.

You will need to get yourself a CLEAN boot disk. You will probably have to download your version of Windows bootdisk from Bootdisk.com on a different computer, unless you created one when you first installed Windows. Insert the bootdisk and choose the start pc without cdrom support, when the DOS prompt appears, type in the following: FDISK /MBR (note the space)

Your Giga-byte motherboard is supporting a 4Mb Display cache, and an upgrade to a 16 or 32mb PCI card would do your gaming a world of good. A PCI card would not be as fast as an AGP card, but it should certainly not be discounted, especially if you are on a budget

Hi! I've got a problem with my CD-RW. Recently, I put in a blank CDRW disk, and, before I had managed to do anything to it, the computer locked up. I restarted it, and then, to my surprise, the computer hadn't recognised either my CDRW drive or the DVD drive. Therefore, I used the system restore tool, yet, still no success. The drives are definatley not recognised, and I cannot find a problem with the power supply, though it seems that no power is going to the CDRW, and even the old paper clip in the hole will not work. Any advice or solutions?

Once i have executed the setup file is the updated driver automatically installed. The reason being is when i checked the version in the system display adaptors it is still version 4.12 and not 4.13. Stuarty, Thew reason it hasn't changed is because you have yet to install them. Have you got Winzip or another file compression utility? If not, go to Cnet.com and download it from there. Once downloaded, install it. Open Windows Explorer, click on the Drive where you have saved the new driver file RIGHT Click on the file that you wish to extract and click on "Extract to" Click "I agree", An applet will pop up. In the Right hand(Folders/Drives) Choose which drive you want to save it to, and which folder by clicking on it. Now click new folder in the bottom right and give the folder a name. Remember the file name and location Then click "Extract" Now go to the new file which you have just created. Inside the folder that you have just created should be your set up file. Now click on Setup in that folder and it will install the new drivers

Mike, trying running SFC, this should check for any corrupt files, and prompt you to replace any found corrupt. Then run scandisk, and defrag, do this in safe mode. One of the problems with error messages such as the one you describe, is that, although it says RAAPP, it could be in another file that RAAP calls, and so may not actaully be RAAP. Try the above then repost if prob. persists.

If you are running Win95 OSR2 (95B) and above, and your HDD has installed with FAT32, then as a result of a bug in FAT32, disk space gets reported incorrectly. Scan disk should sort the error out.

I am running win98. However on pressing run & using sfc I have come up with 2 corrupted files i.e. user.exe and setupx.dll in win/systems. it's recommended that the original installation disc is used which means right back to square 1. By the way thanks for the tip about sfc elswhere on here. Mz. Turner must have had you in mind "You'r simply the best.". Thanks.

Thanks Iain. I think I've got everything working correctly now (I hope)having done a complete reinstall will check out Dr D's just the same. A little knowledge is a dangerous thing but thanks to you, I'm getting more & more proficient at fixing glitches. Thanks again for the reply.

Aaargh! It's happened again!! All my saved jpeg's (and other saved images)have all disappeared and left me with the Windows (top left-hand corner turned over) icon instead of the jpeg/gif/tif etc icon as it was previously saved and I can't remember how to restore the corresponding icon again? The correct extension for the saved image format is retained and I can open the image in MSPaint but cannot then save the image with the jpeg (or whatever) icon. Can anyone please advise? Thanks in advance.

You really do need a paint package such as PSP, the icons you are seeing is because MSPAINT, is an MS programme, and so the default windows icon is used. As for file assocaitation, the folder optins are found... star/folder options.. then file types .choose the file name you want, then edit, then where it says actions, choose open, then browse, find the programme that youwant to open the image with, and then double click on it, then close and close again, then ok, and it should now work.

Open "My Computer". Click the file that you want a different program to open. On the File menu, click Properties. Click Change. Click the name of the program that you want to open the file, or click Other to select a program that is not listed.

Thanks again, Iain. I've been able to convert my images to tif's and they've saved ok, but when I then open them up to save as jpeg's, they are saved with the jpg extension but still with the Windows icon. Any idea how I can change the icon to the 'default' jpeg icon? In advance, cheers!

Go to Start | Settings | Control Panel | Folder Options | "File Types" Tab Highlight the jpg extension click Advanced, click change icon, choose your icon :)

Iain, have been able to change the extension (and icon) successfully by renaming the extension as a tif and saving it in this format, but cannot change the extension to jpeg as it saves only with the aforesaid 'cursed' Windows icon!

Which image editors do you have on your system. What is happening is that at the moment the jpg extension has not been associated with a particular program. Open "my computer", open your c:drive, click view, go to Options, highlight jpg, then click edit. Click Edit again, Choose the image editor that you wish to open your jpg with by clicking browse and pointing to it. Ps it's not always a good idea to change extensions, as it may cause a corruption to the file

Iain, am running Windows98SE and on following your instructions, I can open up Folder Options but cannot find "File Types" as you suggest - Can only find "General" and "View" tabs. Which tab do I select and what are my next steps? Thanks.
