I would be grateful for some help on a basic question (again!), please. When I am downloading some programs I am given the choice of either 'Run this program from its current location' or 'Save this program to disk'. In what circumstances would I use the first of these options? What does 'Run this program from its current location' mean and what happens to a download when you choose this option? Also, has anyone had experience of Cnet CatchUp and BigFix? Are they similar programs? If so, any opinions on which is the better?

if you run from this location it will start installing, only do this if told to such as updating msn messanger,if you save to disk you can virus check and close programs down before installing,in my opinion catchup is better because it uses no resources bigfix monitors you system from startup, both are similar.

To install your drivers prior to connecting the camera, place the driver cd that came with the camera, and then log onto your cdrom drive, and look for a file called setup.exe, or maybe install, but it is now usually setup. As soon as you log your cdrom drive, the setup programme should be there, then double click on or, and it should run, once your drivers are installed, turn off your puter, and connect your camera, making sure it is switched on, then turn on your puter, and now, it should work...

Phil, as Matthew says, with some USB devices you need to add the drivers before you actually plug the hardware in. Once you have done that plug the camera in and turn it on. One little quirk of Fuji cameras is that they aren't actually installed as a camera, but as a removable drive, so once you open Windows Explorer, you may find you have a drive that you didn't have before!

Hi, Although I'm not familiar with your Fuji Camera this may help as I had a Sony Camera that did similar. 1) Check that you have the camera powered ON before this box pops up and (if applic) is in 'play' (or similar admin mode - i.e. not set to take pics) if it has this function. 2) Check that there's not a 'quick start' or similar sheet thrown in the box containing important info on setup - because on some USB devices you can NOT set them up via MS Windows Add New Hardware - you have to press Cancel/Do Not install to all the boxes and then manually install it off the disk/cd. Failing this - post another message with more info (such as PC Windows version, Camera Model, Is it USB etc and maybe someone else will have an idea - or see fuji's website FAQ's?

To remove the password prompt start by finding the PWL file relating to your username and rename it to *.old (e.g. c:\windows\john.old). Now restart Windows and you'll be prompted for a password, leave the Password box empty then click OK, you should now not be prompted for a password again.

Heavy D, You haven't by any chance loaded Gator or AudioGalaxy have you? It is spyware/stealthware that is installed alongside these and other programs that are supported by ads. Gator Advertising and Information Network Trickler feeds information back and then pops up appear all over the place.
I would be interested purely from a knowledge point of view if you have on your system a program called "fsg*.exe"

I would suggest that you install Ad-aware and use that to prevent the "theft" of your bandwidth

Iain, many thanks. I've looked for fsg*.exe but file finder shows nothing of that name (I realise thsi means precious little). I'm about to get ad-aware, but have never even heard of Gator and Audiogalaxy, let alone downloaded them. I'm also running zonealarm, which I understood would stop things of this nature happening. Something of a mystery.
Heavy D - Thu Mar 14 11:42 2002

PS Cheers Iain; ad-aware is a godsend. Now that I come to think of it (and read your reply properly) I use Download Accelerator, which is ad-supported. Can't believe these people get away with this; I also read that article about hidden mircosoft files that you pointed someone to the other day. To think some in government want to monitor the web more heavily; I wonder if they even know what's going on under their noses. It can't be tolerated. Web User; an expose please! I'm all for ad-support if the product's free but this is just taking the ****!
Heavy D - Thu Mar 14 12:44 2002
reply

Gator are very proud of their GAIN product, see how they advertise it here on the net. Gator is involved in a lawsuit in the States.
I no longer recommend Download Accelerator as a download manager, after having tried Fresh Download from Freshdevices Downloads (1.2Mb Free). There are NO adverts or spyware installed and has most of the features including scheduling that are included in DA. Glad you like Ad-aware

Hi, Windows XP doesnt allow for direct DOS access, and the setup programme for xp says that it cannot be run from DOS, I wanted to run XP installation from my hard drive, meaning that the installation files be copied to my hd, now, I know that this can be be done, because when new systems are sold, some of them have the OS in a partition on the hard drive, so therefore it is possible, can anyone tell me, how I can run the installation from the hard drive, and not the cd. Also, is there any file manager programme that offers long file name support, but will work from DOS? Thank you in advance.
- Wed Mar 13 08:24 2002
reply

Usually the manufacturers use a program like Symantec Ghost to clone entire hard drives. See here for details. However, rather than go to the expense of purchasing the product, M$ do actually provide Start up disks for the Home and Professional versions of XP. Make sure you get the right one as they are not interchangeable. Cna't help with your file manger question, sorry!!

Thank you for your reply, but what I am after is a way to launch the setup programme for windows xp from my hard drive in DOS mode. Normally I can copy all the cab files down to the hard drive, then just run setup from the command prompt, I want to do this with windows xp, the boot disks you refer to, do not allow for this. Also, I want to be able to put windows in a differe directory and not the defaul windows directory it puts there. Also, in previous versions of windows the win.com programme is what launches windows, although undern xp and windows 2000 it isnt that file, what is the name of the file that launches windows in both xp and 2000, thank you again for your help.
- Wed Mar 13 20:46 2002
reply

I understand what you are trying to do, you may have down the dual booting route. The reason for this is that XP does't use DOS in any way, using instead the NT Kernel. M$ in their own way acknowledged that DOS on which all the earlier platforms were based was flawed. Obviously, with XP being NT based, it uses NTFS rather that FAT. So when you partition your HDD, you will have two (or more) types of file system. You might want to read this article

Thank you Iain for your advice, could you tell me please what the starup file is tha windows xp and windows 2000 use please, in previous versions of windows it was WIN.COM, but it is not that now..Also, MS say they dont want to use DOS, but as the name implies, that is all that windows is, a Disk Operating System, that as always been what it is.. Also, take a look at some of the new commands, like CHKDSK, sound familar?, also, the file names are still limited to the 8 charactors for installation purpose at least. Thanks again for your advice, I hope that you can help me on this occastion too. ohh, one more thing, the autorun.inf file, how can I test one of this, when I write one, without writing it to a cd first?..Thank you again for all your advice.

Gilian, First thing to do is to apply a patch. Unfortunately, there was a bug in the original version, go to Windows update. once you have downloaded the patch and installed it, make sure that nothing is running. Do a Ctrl Alt Del and close everything down except Explorer. Now run System Restore, If necessary, go back a day or two.

Any advice on upgrading? My Packard Bell Pentium II 233mhz is nudging four years and is starting to feel its age. Not exactly sure what things like RAM do; I know I need a bigger hard-drive cos it's a pathetic 4G, but what other parts of the computer should I be looking to upgrade with a view to speeding up general, everyday things? Is it actually cheaper to buy another computer, and how can I tell if mine is even upgrade compatible? Any guidance would be much appreciated.
Raph - Tue Mar 12 18:33 2002
reply

It would depend entirely on how adventurous you are feeling. If you feel that you could build your own, then you could build yourself a top of the range computer for about £600. (It can be an incredible learning curve)If you don't feel that confident, you would be better off buying a ready made system. Several things need to be taken into consideration What do you want to use the computer for? Gaming? Graphic Design? Internet? Office work?
Each component has it's own special function, so for instance, if you do a lot of gaming or graphic designing, a quality graphics card is essential. Music playing and composing, a sound card is important.

The most important things to look at are

CPU
Motherboard
RAM
Hard Drive
One more very important thing to consider is the operating System. It tends to get forgotten amongst the desire for speed, but the very part that makes it all happen, the software, is crucial in making choices.
I doubt very much that your motherboard will support a tremendous amount of upgrading, possibly to 500Mhz. Seeing that AMD have stopped manufacturing any CPU under 900Mhz says an awful lot...The 1Ghz and above is here at such a cheap price, with computer specialist stores around my area building 1 Ghz systems for around £500.

4Gb of HDD space is not to be sneezed at. I still use one as my operating system drive, but Slave an 80gb for all my data. It makes life so much more easy when I have to reformat. Certainly increasing the RAM would improve things, but if I remember rightly, Packard Bell used EDO RAM, which would probably make upgrading to the Maximum of 128Mb uneconomic, and would more than likely play havoc with your Windows 95.

I think it may be time to bite the bullet

I agree with you Ian. I was in the same position last year. By the time i pirced up a new CPU/motherboard/graphics/sound/power/HD/ new OS etc etc!!! I decided to buy a new PC. In the long run it is more cost effective. I eventually plumped for an Evesham, and that was only after finding out that Gateway was to be taken over other wise i would have had another Gateway.

I have a problem when I defrag my drives, C drive starts and stops around 10/15 times before it finally completes the task, some times it says that I have to run scandisk as there is a problem on the C drive. When I try to do this scandisk comes up with the words "scandisk has started 10 times do you want to keep receiving this message" and it will not scandisk the c drive. Also the PC keeps blue screening. Any suggestions please.

To answer your problem with scandisk restarting, u may find that you have programs running still, to close them, press ctrl-alt-del once and close everything that is running except explorer and systray then try again. To answer your blue screen question, iguess you are running windows 98 which is a very common problem, nothing you can do about it.

Hello! Please help me with what is a problem I have never seen in your magazine before although I have subscribed to PC Answers for over 6 months! I have a Pentium Celeron 600 PC with 256mb of PC100 ram. I have Norton System Works installed, Norton Firewall and Ultra WinCleaner 2000, which I installed from your disk in issue 104. I have noticed over the last couple of months that my 20gb hard drive was getting more and more full. I used clean Sweep, WinCleaner and deleted over 3gb of files and applications. This included 1.5gb of mp3 files. When I checked the C drive, instead of there being more space on the drive, it had filled up even more, by 0.1 gb! I have now deleted all programs except 1 game, system works and my firewall and still the hard drive shows that it is virtually full. For some reason every time I use my computer the hard drive fills up a little more. Consequently, the computer is now virtually full and is running very, very slowly. Please help me, I have no back up program running as far as I know, so why won'’ me c drive generate more space when I delete files and uninstall applications? Yours sincerely Steven Brand Brand_steven@hotmail.com

When you use System works it stores all you delete in the protected rubbish bin.You have to purge all in the protected files to gain your space back.I had the same problem with 10 gig of video which I had deleted,it took me ages to find it there

Hello Steve, It is possible that your OS is reporting the wrong free space info, to correct this, run Scandisk in safe mode, this should clear any errors, secondly, when a programme is deleted, it sometimes saves it to the temp folder, so it is a good idea to clear the temp folder, and tempory internet folder.

Both Scandisk and Defrag allow you to continue working with your computer while they run. Since they need to manipulate the drive at a low level, they will restart to re-read the filesystem information when a drive they are working with is written to. The problem usually arises when the Windows swap file used for virtual memory is on the drive that is being defragged. Even if it looks like you aren't running any other programs, memory could be being used up by the Windows disk cache, programs that are running in the system tray, such as your AV and also device drivers, leading to memory swap. Screen savers and Power management features can also cause problems. So the best way is to Use Defrag in safe mode or Ctrl Alt Del and close everything but explorer. Turn off screensavers, etc and do a search for *.tmp files and delete them.

XP does not recognise this scanner. I went to the Mustek webpage and downloaded five files (as instructed)to give me the necessary drivers. Web, Web.W02, Web.W03, Web.04, Web.W05. The first file ran successfully. When I try to run the others I get a message "Windows cannot open this file. To open this file Windows needs to know what program created it etc." I have tried to follow the instructions but get hopelessly in a mess. The Mustek webpage doesn't help either. Hello, I think that you may had a corrupt download, I tested the file installation myself, and it worked, what I suggest you do,is d/l the drivers again. Make a folder for them, then go here.. http://www.mustek.com/ Download/driv_scanr/english/ 1200ub.html and locate your OS,then move the mouse pointer over the word download, and click the RMB, then choose save target as, then locate the folder that you just created, and chooose save, when you click on the next file to down load it will auto save to the folder you made. Once the d/l is complete, go to run, choose browse, and locate the folder that you created, click on web.exe and then press ok. The drivers should now install. It says that you should log on as Admiinstrator to do this. If you get a message, that says IE cannot d/l from this site, just try it again, because they apparently have an access limit....hope this helps.

I can't really help you, but take my advice DO NOT TRY TO DELETE THis file. I had the exact same problem as you, I used SFC(go to run, then type SFC)to replace the file with one from a friend's PC. Unluckily for me, the friend was running a different version of Windows. So my PC wouldn't load and I had to format my hard disk and re install windows. The file kernel32.dll is not on the Win 98 disk like it should be. Sorry I can't help, but I know what you are going through and its a tough time. You may be able to replace the file using the above mentioned method, but ask an expert first, and take the file from a friend's PC(C:\Windows\System)who has the same operating system as you, exact same. Do not do it unless an expert tells u its ok, but i think it is, but dont take my word for it, otherwise you could end up like me!

Hi Iain Wolstencroft, many thanks for your advice about uninstalling ZoneAlarm (3rd March). Much appreciated. For my continuing education as a rank novice, can you tell me what is the difference between using the Start | Programs | Zonelabs | Uninstal Zonealarm route and the Add/remove Programs feature? There isn't usually a great deal of difference, except for the fact that Add?remove sometimes may leave icons and other little bits and pieces lying around in the system folder, whereas an Uninstall program provided by the software writer will normally remove everything associated with it. Wherever possible, try and use an uninstall program if provided.

Hi - After clearing out my cookies and temporary internet files i noticed that a particular file still exists, index.dat. I believe this is a history of previously viewed web sites, and was wondering if you could get rid of it or at least delete the files in it? I have tried to delete it but nothing seems to happen. Is it important to clear / delete it? My OS is Windows 2000, IE 5.5. Many thanks!

If you understand dos, you can boot with an old 98 boot disk, and log your C: drive, then locate the index.dat file that is in the windows folder, and delete it. becareful what you delete though, and if your not sure, do not attempt it.

Try Easy Cleaner by Toni arts also try Spider, the latter prog finds hidden files that are scattered all over your H/D. you should be able to find them on any download site. best wishes.

Hi - this time I'm after some help! I just bought a DVD off the internet which is region 1, and now I've found that my DVD player doesn't play region 1 - I am wondering if there is anyone out there who knows if you can download a program off the net that will play them or if there is any other way of getting it to work? (which I doubt...) -Thanks in advance!

You can change the region coding on your pc dvd player, usually a maximum of about 5 times, then it will be fixed in that particular region coding. I was going to try what you hope to do, but soon realised that if I tried the following, I would be out of my depth. If you want a permanent multi-region fix for your pc, then most(but not all) can be hacked using new firmware which is available from the net. The snag with this is that if you are not technically minded, it is possible to completely fry your dvd drive & it will be unrepairable, so only attempt if you know what you are doing. Check out www.dvd-reviewer.co.uk for tips & advice on what you seek. They are a friendly bunch & will usually answer any questions you post in their forums fairly quickly. They do recommend lots of multi-region players, from the ridiculously cheap(about £80) to the obscenely expensive(££££££s). I do have a question though, why don't you just buy a player? Much better on your telly than on a little monitor screen!

Dvd genie is the program you seek, but I don't think it works with Windows XP & certain dvd drives which are faster than 6x. Good luck!

Thank-you - I really didn't think that you could do anything. I guess the other easiest thing to do is just make sure you buy the right region DVD in the first place!!! I will check the site you meantioned, but am not particularly technically minded (I didn't even know of different regions!). Thanks again, Matt

The best reason for going multi-region with a dvd drive/ player is cos u can get them cheaper, sooner & with more features/extras than region 2, if u buy online from the US. That's why everybody is into it, to SAVE MONEY!

Hi Iain Wolstencroft, Lee here about the problem opening MSPaint. I followed what you said to do, but I only got as far as finding that key. I wasn't sure what I was supposed to delete, so I took a screen shot and placed it on this site: http://web.dencity.com/Sabre360. Could you please take a look and tell me again what it is I'm supposed to delete. Thanks for your time.

Lee unfortunately the link is broken so I can't actually see the picture, but basically just delete the whole Paint folder

Hi I've just puchased a USB smartmedia card reader. I've never used a USB device before. The manual says I can "hot swap" smart media cards while the system is running. I have also been told by somebody that you can plug in and unplug a USB connection without having to switch of the p.c. first. Is this true ?

Absolutley - these advances sure make life easier

Jason, you can certainly hotswap media card, it is basically no different from any other form of removable media such as cd-roms or floppy discs.
As for removing a USB whilst Windows is still running is unadvisable. However if you look in your Systray in the bottom right where your clock is, you SHOULD see a little green arrow for removable drives,(which is frequently how smartmedia card readers are handled by Windows) double click on that and you should be asked if you wish to remove it, highlight it and click ok, It will then tell you it is safe to remove it. It will now be safe to unplug it

I hope the following will be easy one to answer! When using the internet, when I open a link (either by right clicking & new window, or directly from the hyperlink) the new screen that appears, comes as a single blue bar (rather than a full window) that I have to maximise before I can read it. This is very annoying, and has only recently started to occur. What do I have to do to make any new internet window open in full screen view?

The simplest way is to go to the corners und look for a small double headed arrow, left click and drag the corners until it fills the screen. When you close the Window, Windows will remember the size next time it's opened

Alternitavely, right click the task bar(at an empty part of it) and go to properties. Check the box that says "show clock". Both answers, Iain's and mine both work the same.

Go to Start | Settings | Taskbar and Start Menu, click show clock.
