Hi,My OS is 98SE, In my windows/system folder I have a folder named MUI which has 28 folders in it. All the foldershave only only one files the same one hhctrlui.dll in them. What are these folders and can I delete them?. George Howe - Aberdeen - Fri Mar 22 21:22 2002 reply
In a word NO! These are used for the various different languages installed on your computer. The appropriate file is used according to the version of Windows Internet Explorer is installed on. Unless you know which one to delete, you won't be able to access the Internet. To be honest, they don't take up a lot of space, so just leave them. My OS is Windows 98. When I close down I get a warning message: 687AF68632 'Windows socket error: (11001),on AP1 ASync Look up' This goes when I click OK but I am worried that it is trying to tell me something. Nick - Preston - Fri Mar 22 11:18 2002 reply
Windows Socket Error 11001 means host not found, and related to a c++ programming error, most probably in the dial up network connectoid (the bit that pops up when you dial). There is a possibility that you might need to re-create your dial up network connectoid. If you do, first make a note of all the details in your existing connectoid by going to Start | Settings | Dial up Networking. Right Click on your ISP and click Properties. Make a note of all the information on each of the tabs, including telephone numbers etc. Now Click Add new Connection insert all the details into the wizard. When you have finished the wizard, Right Click your new connectoid, and click Properties and ensure all is the same as your original. Once you are happy, right click it again and set it as your default, and Right click your old connectoid and delete it Iain Wolstencroft - Accrington - Wed Mar 27 16:47 2002 reply
I have around 12Mb of files in my C:/windows/Applog folder (windows ME), mainly .LGC and .LGD files. I'm assuming they are log files of some sort and would like to know if its safe to delete them ? Alan - Alloa - Thu Mar 21 22:47 2002 reply
It is safe to delete them unless you are going to spend hours analysing them. They will be re-created when you boot up again Iain Wolstencroft - Accrington - Wed Mar 27 16:20 2002 reply
I have recently purchased Windows XP Home edition and everything works fine except my CD recorder. When I run the recording software (WinOnCD) I get the message "Error retrieving SCSI bus info.No SCSI host adaptor found". I have made a few enquiries and it seems I need a new driver for my SCSI adaptor, but I cannot find out how to find the make off my SCSI adaptor. I have tried contacting the suppliers of the PC (Simply Computers) but they were no help. Can anyone help! Geoff Craddock - Waltham Abbey - Thu Mar 21 08:37 2002 reply
When you turn your computer on, whatch the starup screen carefully, as windows boots, press the esc key, and it should show you a list of things loading, one of them will be or should be your scsi adaptor, what what it is called. A lot of scsi adaptors, are made by Adaptec. Another way, is to have your puter apart, (not reccommended if your not sure of your ability to do this), and look at the scsi card, and see what it says about it, if there is an FCC ID you can use this to trace the manufacturer. Drivers.com, allow for such a search. If the scsi is onboard, then your manual should tell you the make of it. Hope this helps. Future - Fri Mar 22 13:16 2002 reply

Try right clicking on the desktop(not on an Icon though),select Properties>Settings>then increase the Screen and Desktop sliders to 800X600 and click Apply, That may do it, sometimes a program can reset your screen settings by itself. If you move your mouse off the side of the screen you should be able to see the hidden parts of the screen. Tim Baker - London - Tue Mar 19 22:28 2002 reply
Hi Tim, the first thing i done, was try to change desktop pixel slider, but unfortunately the apply button is way off screen. i even tried moving the toolbar down, to see if it might have been under there, to no avail. Any more ideas? Steph - Liverpool - Tue Mar 19 23:09 2002 reply
Steph, If you can adjust the desktop setting sliders the APPLY button automatically highlights, so you just have to press ENTER on your keyboard instead of clicking. Tim Baker - London - Tue Mar 19 23:22 2002 reply

I dont know why your get the Check back letter message, but the .swp file, is a windows swap file, it is what windows uses to control the use of virtual memory, which is made up of part hard drive space and main memory, (RAM), deleting this file, wont matter, because windows will just re-create it again Future - Tue Mar 19 18:18 2002 reply

System Windows 98. When Firewall installed my Disc Defragmentation would not run. In fact it froze screen and I had to Ctrl, Alt & Del to get things working again. Any suggestioms? ROY GRANT - BRACKNELL - Sun Mar 17 23:10 2002 reply
My OS is 98 (2nd edition) and Firewall is Zonelab (free version).Try using the free Power Defrag programme from www.e-technik.com. The power defrag takes charge and reboots twice. The first reboot is to free as much memory for its own use - disables screensaver, etc. After completing defrag, the second reboot returns the computer to normal use. This may get around your firewall problem. Worth a try as the power defrag is very fast compared to window 98's built-in defrag programme. Rod Shinkfield - Chorley - Sun Mar 31 09:32 2002 reply
hi, I am looking to clear out my PC and re-install everything again. I have saved everything I need to disk, is there a quick and easy way to achieve this. Thankyou Lorna Oneill - wemyss bay - Sun Mar 17 21:13 2002 reply
If you are going to clear your hard drive, and you want to re-install windows, then unless the windows installation files are on your hard drive, you will need the windows me cd, and also, you will need all the relevant drivers for your computer, such as, sound card drivers, graphics card drivers, and mother board drivers. Windows may support these devices by default, but if it doesnt, then you will need them, as well as the windows ME disk. It would be better if you could get a Windows ME cd really. If you can, check with the people that you bought the computer from, they maybe be able to advise you on what you can do. See, some computers come with the installation files already on the hard drive, and they just give you a restore disk or something, and then you run that and it reinstall, personally I do not like that method, because you are limited, but if you can get the Windows ME cd, and the right drivers for you puter, then that woudld be better. Future - Tue Mar 19 02:45 2002 reply
Do not reformat your hard drive until you know for sure that the installation files are on your hard drive, or you have the Windows ME cd. Future - Tue Mar 19 03:01 2002 reply
You dont say what windows version you have, but if your using windows 98, then the best way is to make a boot disk, then boot with the new boot disk, choose boot withcdrom access, then when your at the A: prompt, type:- Format c:/q/s, this will do a quick format, then with your windows cd in your cdrom drive, log onto your cdrom and type setup, then press enter. Windows setup programme will start, make sure that you have backed up all your data, and also that you have the windows cd available. Future - Sun Mar 17 23:43 2002 reply

The file, Winword.exe is Microsofts Word. It is part of the office package, although at one time it was a seperate package, you will need the office cd to put back the winword file correctly. If you know exactly where it came from, then you could get the winword.exe programme, and just copy it back to its location, and all shoudl work again, however, I do not recommend this, I recommend, that you re-install office, that way, it will put back any other files that have been deleted. why not use a programme called "end it all2". This programme shuts down all running programmes except the vital ones & ones that you choose to keep running. It is best to run Scandisk and Defrag from Safe mode. The reason you were asked to press CTRL & ALT, and DEL, was so that you could close off programmes that were running in the background, except for Explorer, and the reason you should do this, is because some programmes access the hard drive while Scandisk is running, and this causes it to either restart, or to freeze, and the same with Defrag. There are occasions when Scandisk will run correctly while other programmes are running, but it is always best to run both Scandisk and Defrag in safe mode. Future - Mon Mar 18 13:56 2002 reply
Hi. When I clean up, I start up my computer from fresh, then I just go to Programs/Accessories/ System Tools, then run Scan Disk and then Defrag after that's finished. Download the free Power Defrag programme from WWW.E-Technik.com. This programme takes charge of your PC and reboots twice. The first reboot is to automatically disable screensaver, etc. and to free up memory for its own use. The second reboot happens after the defrag is complete and returns your pc to normal. You will find Power Defrag much faster than windows built-in defrag. Rod Shinkfield - Chorley - Sun Mar 31 10:08 2002 reply

Is this fault recent? Possible causes, could be cdrom/dvd needs cd cleaner, and the floppy drive could be faulty. Windows will hang while it tries to get a signal back from the floppy drive. Its also possible that there is some kind of conflict going on, and so you should read the help file on conficts and see if you can identify one, sadly though, some conflicts that exist wont be found by windows, infact sometimes you only know there is a conflict when the system hangs. Try the cd cleaner, first, and get your cdrom working, then re post about the floppy. Future - Mon Mar 18 15:26 2002 reply

This isnt exactly a question, more of an opinion really, but I noticed the high cost of windows xp, this as been the case with MS Operating systems all through out, yet all I think that it should do is to allow the use of all the devices that may be attached to it, which was its primary function when it start out. Now it comes with net software and browsers and email software, which some dont want. All it needs to do is allow us to install software, that WE want on our systems, not everyone wants to use IE, but we are not given the option to not install it it just installs itself, also, networking, ok, so we want to network, but we dont necessarily want to use MS networking software, we want to choose our own software, yet with windows 2000 it installs it anyway, and doesnt ask us if we want it. I also thing that the OS should be free, and it shouldnt need to take up so much of memory and hd space, even if our drives are 20gb 40gb etc. If we want to use networking software, and internt software, then we should be able to choose whether we want MSofts, or other, and NOT be forced to use MSoftware. Well that is my opinion anyway. - Fri Mar 15 15:35 2002 reply

I would be grateful for some help on a basic question (again!), please. When I am downloading some programs I am given the choice of either 'Run this program from its current location' or 'Save this program to disk'. Like most people I've downloaded Bigfix and found I have a new problem everytime I open an application, so like agood boy I loaded some bloody long 'fixes' only for Norton to turn around at the installation and say there is a virus present.Moral to that story if it has been working don't touch.Enough said.... Nick G - Portsmouth - Tue Mar 26 01:13 2002 reply
I think(someone will correct me if I'm wrong, cos I'm a newbie also!)that "run from current location" will just run the program, but "save to disk" will store it on your hard drive. As for bigfix, I recently downloaded this program & it basically will find fixes & patches for faults in your software. The problem that I have found, is that EVERY time I turn on my pc, the damn thing tells me it has found fixes to something or other!I wasn't aware that a pc could have so many faults that needed fixing! It can be VERY annoying, so I am going to uninstall it today. After all, I have run my pc for 12 months without needing to update anything at all, so I don't see why I should now suddenly need to download fixes to all & sundry! AND!! the downloads can take a long time to do, which can also be a pain in the......... and wast more of my valuable time online. Hope this helps, if not, I am sure others will zoom in with their advice for you! Eddie - London - Sat Mar 16 13:27 2002 reply
If you run it from its current location, it just means that it will d/l and run automatically, if yousave to disk, you will have to run it manually.. Future - Fri Mar 15 03:29 2002
