I downloaded iMesh yesterday, and it came with a load of other bits. I have now decided to reomve all from 'puter but 'uninstall' is having none of it. How can I remove this, does anyone know? I tried System Restore but this came bach as unsuccesful Regards Peter Cardiff Peter Johnson Smith - Cardiff - Wed Jul 03 18:08 2002 reply
Peter, Sounds very much like spyware on your computer.Just when you thought you have deleted it all and go on the net,as if by magic, back again.Usually buries itself deep into your system.Adware by www.lavasoft.com will remove the offending material.Lots of free software contain these nasty programs. Nick Thanks very much managed to remove over 50 suspicious files/folders/oter things from computer. Imesh still appears on add/remove in control panel. When I try to remove I get a message 'cannot install UNISTALL>LOG file' Any ideas how to remove thi perisher? Peter Johnson Smith - Cardiff - Sat Jul 06 16:33 2002 reply
Peter, 50 has got to be an all time record!Keep adware for all your downloads. You should notice that your computer will be noticibly quicker. Not sure about how to remove the last bit.I found that the Log may need deleting on your firewall. If not Mr.Ian may help you with a complete removal link. I am trying to run disk defragmentor on Windows ME but just remain at 0% Complete, even when running the system overnight. Tried downloading and running PowerDefrag but still no luck. A disc scan has come up us clear. Does anyone have any idea what is going wrong please? Richard - Sutton - Wed Jul 03 12:52 2002 reply
Try downloading a free program called 'Enditall from http://home.ptd.net/~don5408/toolbox/enditall/.With this program you can close all the pregrams running wth one click instead of Ctrl+Alt+Delete and then end task on each program. Mark,Merthyr Tydfil Mark Wallis - Merthyr Tydfil - Thu Jul 04 10:27 2002 reply
The best and fastest way to run disk defrag is to start your computer in safe mode. To do this you have to reboot your computer and wait for the screen just before your WinME startup logo shows. Once the screen shows, press CTRL and then, when prompted, press F5. Once in safe mode, the only thing that is loaded is Windows Explorer, which means an uninterupted disk defrag. Eddie's way would also work but would be around 5 times slower. Hope you get it sorted. Martin - Huddersfield - Wed Jul 03 21:26 2002 reply
Richard, using Ctrl + Alt and Del you must close down all running programs except Systray and Windows. Also temporarily disable any screen saver you have. Eddie - Croydon - Wed Jul 03 13:25 2002 reply
Hey there everybody! In my Systray, right at the very bottom, I appear to be running something called qttask. I am running Windows 2000 Professional on an IBM. My problem is that when I save documents etc to my desktop, I can't get rid of them. If I put them in the recycle bin and delete, they reappear when I next start up my computer. It's getting annoying. Does anyone know how I can permanently delete them? Thanks in advance. Matt - London - Wed Jul 03 10:10 2002 reply
Matt, desktop items are only shortcuts. Any desktop items you don't want should be right-clicked and deleted. If you want to get rid of the documents, go into My Documents and delete the individual files. Eddie - Croydon - Wed Jul 03 13:35 2002 reply
Actually, that's not strictly true. The Desktop can hold original files and folders. To check if it is a shortcut look at the bottom left hand corner of the icon itself, if there's a little black arrow on a white background ponting N/E there then it is indeed a shortcut and can be deleted without affecting the original file it is a shortcut to. I recently had my PC upgraded with a new mainboard and an AThlon XP 1700 but when I opened Display Properties to check the installation, it showed my CPU as being an 1100. I therefore checked the CPU Setup Facility in BIOS and this also showed it as being an 1100. However, the other setting in the Setup Facility was for a 1700 XP which I selected and saved and when I opened Display Properties, the setting had changed to 1700. My question is:- If the Display Properties can so easily be changed from one reading to another, how can I, or anyone else for that matter, be certain what CPU has been installed. I would only wish to remove the fan and inspect the processor as a last resort, so is there any other way of finding out exactly what CPU has been installed. Your help would be much appreciated. Bernard Shipton - Portsmouth - Mon Jul 01 16:45 2002 reply
I'm afraid you fell right into the marketing trap!!! The Athlon XP rating is based theoretically on the old TBird processor as a benchmark, AMD is now labelling their processors with a rated speed. Instead of selling them as a 1.47GHz cpu, they sell it as a 1700+ cpu because it will perform as fast as a 1.7GHz Athlon Thunderbird processor. Micro$oft and AMD worked VERY closely to develop a CPU that would be extremely stable with Windows XP, hence the XP handle. However, it is based loosely on the Thunderbird chip
This marketing ploy has actually been used before by Cyrix The following are the ratings equivalent XP1500+ 1333 MHz XP1600+ 1400 MHz XP1700+ 1467 MHz XP1800+ 1533 MHz So your XP1700 is a 1467Mhz CPU with the equivalent rating of the old TBird 1700Mhz

Tim, do you have a Lexmark printer by any chance? Evidently this is a common problem with some Lexmark printers. I often got a Spool32 error upon start-up. If you remove 3 Lexmark programs from your startup folder it should correct the issue - it did for me anyway. Go to Start/Run and type msconfig. Click the Startup tab and uncheck Lexstart, Lexsupmon and Lexmarkprintray. It did not affect the printer's capabilities and it speeds up the loading of Windows by doing a selective start up. Hope this helps. Maurice - Croydon - Fri Jun 28 19:32 2002 reply

You could try www.scan.co.uk and www.scan.co.uk/todayonly they have some really good prices on memory. When purchasing memory you must take into account your PC`s specifications and whether you need to ensure that the new memory is the same size if it is going into another set of banks( some boards require that you have a complete circuit........this issue is mainly with RD Ram / Rambus memory). If you are upgrading say from 64MB to 256MB then you must buy 2 x 128MB and not a single 2656MB. If in doubt always email the vendor first for advice before purchasing the product. One word of caution though.....if your machine is under warranty I would advise a DIY upgrade and to use the Supplier or Store in this circumstance to prevent any problems with voiding the warranty. I'm fed up of paying high prices for original ink cartridges. Are compatibles makes of the same quality. Can anybody recommend any compatible makes and suppliers at a reasonable price for a HP 840c deskjet.I do not want quality to suffer. Thanks Steven. Steven - Wakefield - Thu Jun 27 12:34 2002 reply
I used a web-based company called MadforInk who advertised in webuser because my son's GCSE art project were using so much ink. They were much cheaper, the cartridges always arrive within a couple of days, and the quality seems as good. Jeanette - Chelmsford - Sun Aug 04 21:38 2002 reply
Try www.toniK.co.uk. I have HP 940c. Bought a reconditioned cartridge for just under £16. Just as good as original, About 10 quid cheaper and next day delivery for free if you phone before 5pm. Keith - Perth - Sat Jun 29 20:32 2002 reply
Hi Steven, the EU are looking into the high cost of "Original Ink Cartridges" by the main manufacturers. Hopefully this will bring down the cost of "Original" ink as in some instances such as HP "Original " ink can in some cases cost more than a budget printer. You can find good suppliers of "Compatable ink" by checking out the back of Web User mag and email the suppliers with your queries and requirements first and check availability before purchasing( as in some cases stores will take your order but will not tell you if stock is on hand or available. I have had this problem lately sourcing Original ink for a Canon S900. I actually emailed well over 30 different sites to source stock ). In some cases suppliers will buy back your empty cartridges. You can also do a search through Google with your Printers details and compare prices and delivery times. You can also do a search through price comparison sites such as www.kelkoo.co.uk. Hope some of this helps. Liam - Liverpool - Thu Jun 27 15:02 2002 reply
Thanks Liam.Have you personally used compatible and if so was the quality as good as originals. If ink prices do come down I'm sure the prices of printers will shoot up. Steven - Wakefield - Thu Jun 27 19:15 2002 reply
Hi Steven I have used compatables in the past from www.globaldirect.co.uk on both a Canon and a Xerox printer. I found them to be cheap in price to the originals but there seemed to be no difference in print quality on these printers. Liam - Liverpool - Sat Jun 29 22:23 2002 reply
Just a word of caution Steven...if your printer is less than 1 year old I would advise against using compatables on the grounds that if your printer develops any faults then the printer manufacturer cannot use the excuse of you not using "original parts". Saying that compatables offer economy options without affecting print quality. Liam - Liverpool - Sat Jun 29 22:37 2002 reply
Hi Steven I have only recently bought a new printer (Canon S900) which I use for photos. But I have purchased compatables for printers that I have owned in the past.(A Canon and a Xerox). The compatables I purchased were from www.globaldirect.co.uk . They were quite competitively priced and there seemed to be no difference in print quality. Hope this helps Steven. Liam - Liverpool - Sat Jun 29 22:14 2002 reply

Another way to replace lost files is, to insert windows installation disk, hold shift to stop it running. Then go to start menu, run and type sfc. (System file checker). enter and in splash screen select - extract one file from disk - click OK and fill in lost file name, click start, fill in windows in new splash screen and click OK. After downloading, go so Start, run and type regsvr32 mfc42.dll for example (there must be a space between) and click enter and file will be registered. Hope this is clear enough. Hi Allen, Go to Start/Find/files or folders type in raven_def.exe then click Find Now at least this will find the programme! Is this a programme you use or have downloaded at sometime? Sounds like a game. If you don't use it or need it go to Start/settings/control panel/add remove and see if raven or something like it is listed then just remove it. If you don't see anything listed here you could take the bull by the horns and delete the file from the find files or folders. Also more importantly after this go to Start/Run type in regedit click ok. At the top of this box you will see EDIT Click on EDIT then find Nothing Else. Just put into this Raven or raven and see what pops up. You should delete all the raven references listed ONLY. Then restart your computer. Frank - London - Thu Jun 20 01:06 2002 reply

Outlook 2002 (office xp std) keeps crashing - help!!! Dave - London - Mon Jun 17 18:37 2002 reply
Dave, I don't want to seem pedantic, but could you give us a little more detail? Like when does it crash, what programs do you have open at the time? What is the error message? What operating System are you using? Iain Wolstencroft - Accrington - Tue Jun 18 10:04 2002 reply
.....And, three times now, after being left "sleeping" for a while, the monitor displayed a blank screen with a blinking cursor in the corner (ala Jurassic Park!). The only way to regain use has been to turn pc off/on again......weird. Dave - Sun Jun 23 20:54 2002 reply
Running Win98SE - Word crashes frequently, Outlook crashes all the time, no pattern, when other progs are running or not. It shows the "send report to MS?" box (Outlook has encountered a problem?) and asks if I want to start the prog again. Dave - Sun Jun 23 20:35 2002 reply
hi Gang, I know should know better by now but I don't, so please bear with me! Running Windows 95. Just bought my first scanner, a HP scanjet 4400c and think I've set it up ok (printed out the 140 page manual anyway!). My problem - not in the manual - is getting things into my email programme, either supported or unsupported. OE/Hotmail, I can get halfway there but then it says to set up something in the Post office. It says if you can't find the address see Microsoft manager. What is this?. I'm guessing it's something to with POP and SMPTE (ish) I know it's do with Windows Messaging but haven't a clue how to set it up. Your help is appreciated as always, and please accept my thanks in advance. Regards, Steve. steve - Leeds - Mon Jun 17 16:41 2002 reply
If you right click the image that you saved in Windows Explorer, you should see the option of Send to, click on Mail Recipient. This should bring up your default e-mail program, Go from there! Iain Wolstencroft - Accrington - Tue Jun 18 10:34 2002 reply
