Can anyone help with this minor problem, please? I have just beem goven a PC by someone who has used AOL. I have just put a new version of Internet Explorer on it and have found that the new version has the message "Supplied by AOL" and their logo on the title bar. Similarly, I have upgraded Windows to Win 98 SE and this has the AOL logo in it as well. How can I remove it. I am not very pro-American and am definitely not pro-AOL and don't want their logo on my machine. Many thanks Chris - Westgate on Sea - Sun Sep 01 12:00 2002 reply
Hi Iain, Thanks for your message. However, I have to tell you that none of the items you mentioned are there. For, example at "Current User\identities....." etc there is only Outlook Express mentioned and nothing about AOL, and at "Current_User\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Toolbar" there isn't an entry on the right for "BrandBitmap" or SmBrandBitmap". There is, however, in that window, "ab BigBitmap c:\progra~1\Intern~1\Signup\38static.bmp" and another similar entry with SmallBitmap at the beginning and "22static.bmp" at the end. Are these anything to do with AOL. Also their logo appears in "My Computer", and "Windows Explorer" as well as I.E. It constantly flashes in I.E when looking for a site, which is very irritating. Any further ideas, please? regards, Chris Chris - Westgate on Sea - Thu Sep 05 10:17 2002 reply
If that isn't AOHell for you? If I wasn't in company, I'd be turning the air blue!!!
Oh well, we'll just have to try this method then. This should work
Close Internet Explorer and Outlook Express. Go to Start | Run. Copy and Paste in the following rundll32.exe iedkcs32.dll,Clear (This is case sensitive, so you'd be better coopying rather than typing it manually) Press OK. Restart Internet Explorer.
Iain Wolstencroft - Accrington - Fri Sep 06 11:52 2002 reply
There are three steps to achieve what you want to do To get rid of the AOL logo, Go to Start | Run | Type in regedit Find the following key on the left hand side: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Toolbar
Delete the BrandBitmap and SmBrandBitmap string values found under the registry key on the right hand side
Now again in the left side, find: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main ,
Double click Window Title in the right hand side, and change the String Value to whatever you want, or delete it entirely to set it to default
Finally, in the left side, find: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Identities\{** Identity ID **}\Software\Microsoft\Outlook Express\5.0 ,
Double click Window Title in the right hand side, and change the String Value to whatever you want, or delete it entirely to set it to default The **Identity ID** will be a long string of alphanumeric characters
Restart Internet Explorer and Outlook Express Iain Wolstencroft - Accrington - Sun Sep 01 14:15 2002 reply
My friend is running Win 98 2nd edition on a laptop and whether or not connected to the internet receives a RUNDLL32 error. The only information the error gives after that is a single comma ('). I have tried the Microsoft support website but can not find any reference to that paticular error. Can anyone help?? Much appreciated. Ryan - London - Sat Aug 31 00:49 2002 reply
Ryan, Could you give us the full rundll32 error message, that will help narrow it dow a bit? Iain Wolstencroft - Accrington - Sat Aug 31 07:35 2002 reply
That's just it about this message. The only information that pops up in the error message window is a single comma after RUNDLL. There is nothing else. By accepting it and closing the window you can carry on but sure enough in no time soon, it will reoccur. Ryan - London - Sun Sep 01 05:09 2002 reply
Sorry. I don't know why my reply just popped up 3 times!!!! Ryan - London - Sun Sep 01 05:16 2002 reply

I recently bought a Canon digital camera with software for both capture and image editing. But for storage I am creating large folder structures and a file naming convention (date & keywords) but would like a database-type solution to store them by. Any ideas? Iain - Leamington - Thu Aug 29 21:20 2002 reply
The simplest way would be to use Excel, but obviously this is only an option if you have Micro$oft Office installed. If you have Office installed and wish to know how to do this gives us a shout, if not, we'll need to think of another solution Iain Wolstencroft - Accrington - Thu Aug 29 22:15 2002 reply
I have internet explorer 5.5 on Windows ME. In the advanced/securit settings of the properties I have ticked the box that says 'Empty temporary internet files when browser is closed ', but it doesn't ! I still have to go in and clear them manually. Does anyone have a solution to this ? julia - Glasgow - Thu Aug 29 20:20 2002 reply
Julia, it doesn't clear them all, e.g. names, codes, addresses, passwords, etc. that are saved via "autocomplete" are never deleted. Hope this helps. Eddie - Croydon - Thu Aug 29 20:29 2002 reply

I tried to reinstall with Office XP & windows 98 SE to update the IE to ver 5.5 but they are still in GERMAN. I have also tried to change the regional settings but still no change. I sent a Word document to a friend but she could not open it. Something to do with her Windows95 & my Windows Me/Word2000, so I sent it in notepad for her which worked fine. She sent documents to me in notepad which open fine on my pc. The problem I now have is that ANY text document I am sent by anyone, is opened in notepad & looks very poor in comparison to what it would/should look like in Word. Why is my pc opening text documents in notepad format all the time & how do I change it back to Word as the default text file opener? Eddie - Ilford - Wed Aug 28 18:57 2002 reply
well Eddie can I persuade you to try this. work in word 2000 as usual And save as usual. Now open again and when saving : scroll down in the option window you will be pampered with a lot of options as to save as (e.g. word 95 or earlier versions even as wordperfect document) choose same as your friend is having. You might lose some advance functions of 2000 but in prctise you will hardly notice any differance. Shubham - Enniskillen - Tue Oct 15 12:58 2002 reply
This is easy but can be a right pain if you don't know how. Select the file you want to access then press shift and right click it, select open with from the selection that comes up.This gives you the programs on your PC select Word and check always open this type of file with this program. john-boi - Sheffield - Wed Aug 28 19:10 2002 reply

Edward, by rights, .txt documents should be viewed in notepad (or wordpad if very large) mainly to preserve Rich Text formatting. Word primarily opens .doc files.
However, if you wish to open .txt files with Word (and I have to add this caveat, not recommended), then follow these instructions:
open Windows Explorer, find a txt doc, hold down shift key, right click it and click Open with choose Word.
You might want to ask your friend to download the Word viewer (3.86Mb Freeware), which will allow her to see your document as you typed it in Word Iain Wolstencroft - Accrington - Wed Aug 28 19:12 2002 reply

I had the same problem-the adaptec easy cd creator has a bug in it which means when you crash your pc, you reboot and can never find your d or e drive. The solution which Ian gave is correct, but instead of using the wizard to find the cd rom drivers, you should do this manually, or just log straight onto the internet as this appears to correct the error and the drives reappear-I have same system as you- Win 98 se and same cw writer software- it took me over 4 hours on the net one day to find someone who had a similar problem anad correct it. hope this helps, you should also reinstall adaptec- or even better get nero . - . - Tue Sep 17 17:04 2002 reply

I have an old Windows 95 Pentium r PC upgraded to 80 mb RAM 8.4 gb HD. My nephew very kindly gave me his discarded Mitsumi CR-2801 TE CD-R Drive to replace my original CD Rom-Drive. Everything works fine except when I try to use setup or do a clean install from my original Windows 95 disk. The CD-R drive appears incompatible with the disk and I have to refit my old CD Rom drive to get around the problem. This is the fault Number SU991010. Any suggestions on how to remedy this would be appreciated? I tried everything listed at this site.

Joe, First things first, looks like you too have got a hang of the links, good show!
Next, this CD Drive of yours, is it on the same IDE ribbon as your Hard drive, as a slave disk, or is it on a second IDE ribbon as a Master.
Some of the older CD-RWs hate playing second fiddle to anything, and so must be the Secondary Master on a second IDE ribbon.
Also, make sure that the boot disk has a newer MSCDEX or Aspi driver for the cd drive.
Always do a clean install of Win95 on a clean formatted disk, though with what you have there, I think I might be tempted down to my local computer fair, to pick up a Win98 disk, anything than have to deal with 95 again!!! Iain Wolstencroft - Accrington - Wed Aug 28 18:49 2002 reply
Iain, Thanks for the quick response.
The CD-R has a second ide ribbon as second master. It is not connected to the hard drive. I found the MSCDEX located in Windows Command which, is dated July 7, 1995. Is that what you are referring to and is it too old? If so can I download a later version from somewhere? I can only find one reference to Aspi and that is just a file. I'm sorry to say, like its owner, my Computer is really old now but still adequate for my needs. I've had it from new and it has never given me any trouble, says he with fingers crossed. Hopefully I shall be able to replace it within a year. This is not a serious problem because as I said I can get round it by reinstalling the CD-Rom drive on the odd occasion when I F/Disk.I just thought it was worth posting as someone might have experienced this problem before. Joe - London - Wed Aug 28 22:42 2002 reply
Joe, Go to DrDs and click on the Boot Disk Link at the top.
Download the correct bootdisk for your version of 95 (Use Start | Settings | Control Panel | System | General Tab). Choose the WinImage versions, rather than the DOS version. Extract it to a floppy disk.
The bootdisk contains everything necessary for a successful setup, including cd-rom drivers Iain Wolstencroft - Accrington - Wed Aug 28 22:57 2002 reply
Done that Iain,
Don't know when I'll be using setup again as everything is running well just now and no clutter since recent F/Disk. I'll keep the floppy until needed.
Many thanks for your help. Joe - London - Thu Aug 29 08:56 2002 reply
My Informatica PC was struck by lightening. Insurance job..new modem and sundry bits and pieces. Upon its return I tried to defrag. It makes all the right noises and flashes the red light but it goes no further than "0" (zero)%. I left it on through the night to see if it would make any progress but it still remains at "0". Even when it automatically goes to defrag (every 14 days) it still does not make any progress. Has any reader got any clues, please? Fulham - Lakenheath - Wed Aug 28 13:17 2002 reply
Your best bet would be run Defrag from Safe Mode. Re-start your computer You don't say which version of windows you are running, but if you press F8 or Ctrl as the computer boots up, run Once you are back up, run defrag as normal Iain Wolstencroft - Accrington - Wed Aug 28 14:15 2002 reply
Iain, thanks for reply. I have Windows 98. I rebooted and pressed F8 during reboot. (is "Once" a program?) I went to defrag but the PC froze with the Defrag Drive C box on-screen doing nothing. I had to use the over-ride to reboot. Might there be another thing I should do? Fulham - Lakenheath - Sat Aug 31 07:51 2002 reply
