Hi!
I’ve just registered with Gmail and wanted to add it to Outlook Express, but failed to do that. I get an error message (the code is 0x800CCC1A). I found numerous topics about it on the Internet, but nothing has been of any help..
I did everything like they said on Gmail Support page – enabled POP on Gmail itself, then configured Outlook according to the support page. I first downloaded the auto-configuration tool, then, after failing, tried configuring it by myself.. I know that some people have problems because they write their username in the account field when you have to write the full e-mail, or don’t check 'This server requires a secure connection (SSL)', or forget to enter '465' in the 'Outgoing mail' field, but I did everything exactly like it’s written on the page.
But I still get that error message.. I really don’t know what the problem is and how I can solve it. Can somebody please help me with it?
I use Windows 98 and Outlook Express 6.
Cheers! Anastasia

Like I have written, I've already done it! The point is that I'm pretty sure that I configured Outlook Express correctly - the problem is about something else I guess..

In outlook Express, click Tools Click Accounts Highlight your gmail account Click Properties, Click Servers Ensure that My server requires Authentication is checked
Then click the Advanced Tab
Ensure that the two This server requires a secure connection SSL are checked and that SMTP is set to 465 and Pop to 995

Did it. I get a new error message: 0x800CCC0F saying that the connection was refused by the server or something like that (it's in Russian).

Have you enabled POP access in GMAIL?

It is enabled. I'm pretty sure that I confugured Outlook and Gmail correctly. The problem is in something else which I don't know.. It just refuses to work..

Have you tried deleting the account in outlook express and starting from scratch?

Thank you for the tip, but unfortunately it didn't help. All this information was on the Gmail support page as well..

I've just spent 2 hours trying to configure OE to open a Gmail account without success. I too followed the instructions about 10 times, deleted the account and re-installed, all to no avail. In the end I gave up, reissued a Gmail invite to myself from the Web login and created a new Gmail account. I then did the auto config for OE and the damned thing worked first time!
I then logged onto the original Gmail account on the Web and setup forwarding for all mail from that account to the new one which allowed me to keep and use the orginal email address.
I can only assume that the registry had a bad entry for the first account.

I've just noticed on your first post that some of the characters don't appear correctly. I know this is a long shot but could it be anything to do with character sets on your PC? I'm wondering if Gmail is seeing a particular character as something other than what it should be. In particular the @ character will appear as a double quote if you have the US keyboard/locale on your PC. Could be worth playing around with that.

Even though I've never had any problems like that, I did all the configuration again, I didn't type my e-mail address, but pasted it from the Gmail page (in case I have some problems with @ sign), but I still got the same old error message..

I am running out of ideas now. The only thing I can think of now is that for some unknown reason your own ISP has put some sort of block on POP mail from Google. Seems totally unlikely I know but if the problem isn't on your PC it can only be on your ISP's server. How about going to their customer service people and asking the question.

Well, thanks anyway to everybody who tried to help!

I have just solved this problem when trying to solve a completely different one!
I needed to connect to a secure site, but failed to do so, 'coz I had IE 6 with cipher strength set at 40-bit, when 128-bit was required. So, I re-installed IE to have cipher strangth changed and after doing so I was able to confige Gmail!
A big thank-you goes to everybody who tried to help!

Could you tell me exactly how you got it to Gmail and outlook to work. I dont understand why I would need to reinstall IE, or what I would need to change if I did so.
