Start up trouble. I have a PIII 450 MHz 128MB SDRAM 13Gb PC running Windows 98. On starting up I get to my desktop background image and sometimes some of my icons and task bar load and other times none of them load. When I press Ctrl Alt Del I get either explorer not responding (hence no icons or taskbar) or something else not responding. Pressing Ctrl Alt Del again will not restart my PC and I usually have to revert to the dreaded reboot button. This can happen up to 4 times before I can use my PC. I've tried running System Checker and Norton Utilities but these show no problems, Any idea what I can do next? Also I'm thinking of changing my operating system to XP because I won 'Microsoft Office XP Professional' in a prize draw and I've only got 3.7Gb space free and thought that if I installed this it would clear up the redundant programs that I don't use or have uninstalled but that have left little bits behind. Any help would be appreciated. Carole Carole Coleman - Chippenham - Tue Oct 29 17:53 2002 reply
I'm going to point you in the same direction as I pointed Alan, and that is towards the Aumha Shutdown and Startup Troubleshooter, In my humble opinion the finest diagnostic website. I will repeat the warning that I gave to Alan and that is that you follow the instructions in order Iain Wolstencroft - Accrington - Tue Oct 29 18:44 2002 reply
Thanks Iain for the quick reply. I checked the link out but that seemed to cover Shutdown/Restart errors. I couldn't find any useful info on start up problems. Had trouble starting up again tonight. I got the black screen with the cursor in the top right hand corner. Ctrl Alt Del got me started in safe mode. I ran system checker and it told me that the following files had been deleted/altered WINDOWS - ACCSTA\T.EXE. WINDOWS/SYSTEM -ACCWIZ.EXE, ENABLE2.VXD, ENABLE3.DLL, ENABLE4. VXD, MAG_HOOK.DLL, MAGNIFY.EXE & OLEACC.DLL. Any idea if these files are important and if so where do I restore them from? Any help greatfully received. Carole Carole Coleman - Chippenham - Wed Oct 30 18:32 2002 reply
Put your Windows cd in your CD ROM Drive Go to Start | Run Type in SFC Click OK This may take some time and at several stages, you will be asked if you wish to replace particular files, Click Yes to all that appear. Are these files important?Yes and no, ENABLE2.VXD, ENABLE3.DLL, ENABLE4. VXD, are absolutely essential, the others are to do with accessibility for disabled people. Iain Wolstencroft - Accrington - Wed Oct 30 18:46 2002 reply
Thanks Iain. Did as you said. Ran SFC. All OK now. I'd removed accessibility via add/remove to save space hence those files appearing. I think I'll stop tinkering with my PC to try and improve performance/space I seem to be causing more problems than I'm solving. Carole Coleman - Chippenham - Wed Oct 30 19:47 2002 reply
Carole, don't give up tinkering. I can assure you that the rewarding feeling when something goes RIGHT far outweighs that despair that one occasionally feels when it looks like you are going to have to do that re-format. There is also that feeling of relief when you repair that damage you thought was irrepairable. Nah, much more fun to tinker!! Iain Wolstencroft - Accrington - Wed Oct 30 20:49 2002 reply

You can tell I've just discovered this discussion area - Using new digital camera, I've taken pictures and worked out how load them on my PC using the memory card, these get stored to my hard drive but worry they take too much space, tried saving them to a floppy disc but to my surprise, there was only room to save one picture to one floppy disc. Can I save pictures on a CD? And can I just go and buy blank CD's for this purpose? Cheers for any info.. Vannessa - Tue Oct 29 14:22 2002 reply
Welcome to the Web-User Discussion Forums, Vanessa Digital pictures CAN take up an awful lot of room especially if the camera has a high resolution and if the images are saved as Tifs
You can save images to cd as data without any problems, (obviously, you need a cd rw drive and the software) CD-RW MAY be what you need as you can treat these just like massive floppy disks once formatted.
My first concern is your hard drive space. The first thing I would do is download a program called Irfanview (this program is FREE)
Once you have downloaded it, I suggest that you look at a simple tutorial on how to use this great program effectively, covering tasks such as Viewing, Resizing and cropping images. You may find also that if your camera takes pictures as TIF or BMP files that by saving them as Jpgs, you can save as much as 60% in file size Iain Wolstencroft - Accrington - Tue Oct 29 15:30 2002 reply
Thanks for the welcome and the advice on the Irfanview program. The pictures saved to my hard drive have saved as Jpgs automatically so its good to know I'm making the best out of something I wasn't sure about. Would it be possible for you to go into a little more detail about the CD RW drive and perhaps recommend any particular types? Thanks again Vannessa - Wed Oct 30 07:54 2002 reply
First the bad news (I like to give bad news first, it gets out of the way) Compaq does not do a cd-rw drive for this particular model, and a solution will cost about £100 inc. P&P and VAT. The other thing is trying to find one that will work with a P266 laptop.
The good news is that I did find one at slightly less than that (£92.24 to be precise!) I keep spending your money!! sorry! The Acer 4406EU 4x4x6 is a USB external Cd rewriter, requiring a Windows 98, a P166 processor and 32MB ram, which we know yours has at the very least.
It comes with Nero burning software (essential!) and all the necessary cables (again essential!!)
People will be saying that you could get faster drives, but I will remind them that we are talking a Pentium P266 laptop here, and a faster drive would be totally wasted! Iain Wolstencroft - Accrington - Wed Oct 30 10:17 2002 reply
Thanks for the info in your reply - don't seem to be having much luck do I - only purchased a laptop because I didn't have room anywhere to house a 'normal' PC (with seperate monitor, base unit etc). Look like spending more money. Thanks for finding a Cd rewriter that is compatible, I'll upgrade my memory first before going on another spending spree. Vannessa - Thu Oct 31 09:28 2002 reply
I'm a novice to the digital imagery world - have recently purchased a digital camera and can work it reasonably well, but am having trouble with my new scanner, I think it is user error and am expecting different results when using particular options, can anyone tell me briefly how to scan a picture and how to scan a document successfully please? The scanner is a Hp scanjet 3500c series Cheers for any info. Vannessa - Rotherham - Tue Oct 29 13:53 2002 reply

Vanessa, can I ask a few questions? Are you using this for your scanning and your digital photography? Which version of windows have you got installed? Iain Wolstencroft - Accrington - Tue Oct 29 15:47 2002 reply
Hi Iain - thanks for your replying. Yes I am using my laptop for scanning and digital photography. I have Windows 98 installed. Cheers Vannessa Vannessa - Wed Oct 30 07:45 2002 reply
OK, Vannessa, First things first, We need to know how much memory you have installed. To find out, Go to Start | Settings | Control Panel | System On the General tab, there is a Manufactured and supported by Section and at the bottom, it should give you the amount of RAM installed in your laptop, I am hazarding a guess at either 32Mb (for a system that has not been upgraded) or 64Mb for a system that has been upgraded)
Windows 98 allegedly runs ok on 32Mb, but in my experience 64Mb is bare minimum. Unfortunately, your laptop can only be expanded to 96MB maximum.
The trouble is that graphics programs and hardware that use graphics require a substantial amount of resources and you will certainly need to increase your RAM in order to be able to work effectively. I have been doing a search for RAM for Presario 1234 and have only found one reseller at Pcupgrader, put in the part number KTC-P1200/64 to bring up the 64Mb memory at £32.41 (inc P&P and VAT)
In the meantime, I suggest that you should also do some maintenance. Click the Tips before you start Iain Wolstencroft - Accrington - Wed Oct 30 09:37 2002 reply
Thanks for the quick and most helpful reply. Have checked the memory on my machine, worst fears rang true, only 32 RAM. Checked out the Pcupgrader site and it did confirm your findings, think I'll be making that purchase sooner rather than later. The tips for maintenance were good, I've got into the habit of doing a little house keeping but the tips offered are more in depth. Thanks Vannessa - Thu Oct 31 09:15 2002 reply

Ok Ian, filename: spoker.zip, ........I know, I know. I started in safe mode and deleted all the files it unzipped. Now my AMR AC link modem has packed in !!!! Coincidence or virus? Modem has been working fine for 2 years! Gonna get a PCI one today. Thanks for any help Jamie Jamie - Fife - Tue Oct 29 09:35 2002 reply
Jamie, I found that simply deleting the folder solved the problem. It doesn't install anything to the registry so doesn't need an uninstaller. You may have missed a file or two Hint: When unzipping a zip file, always create a special file for your Winzip (or similar Program) to unzip it to. Some programs may have hundreds of files zipped together, and it is easy to miss a few should you ever decide to delete or uninstall a program
As for the modem, coincidence, to be honest. Very few virii actually strike hardware, especially modems, because modems are the prime method of redistributing the virus . A virus that isn't passed on is pretty close to useless, or in the very least blooming poor programming!!!
Try re-installing the drivers, though to be honest you would be better off with a PCI modem rather than an AMR. Iain Wolstencroft - Accrington - Tue Oct 29 11:11 2002 reply
I have a year old computer that has windows 98 and BT anytime. For the first few months all worked well. Then I stopped being able to use the BT anytime shortcut on the desktop so I have to use dial up networking. Then for a while I could access my hotmail account via the favourites list in microsoft outlook. Now I can use microsoft outlook to access my homtail account but it has to be via the history window in the tool bar. When I click on favourites and hotmail nothing happens. Its as though every few months my computer decides to alter something fundamental in the way I access the internet. Jan Russell - Birmingham - Sun Oct 27 22:11 2002 reply
OK, let me get this straight, Jan, you have two main problems. Your dialler software doesn't work Your Shortcut to hotmail doesn't work Two quick question regarding the Hotmail problem, We are talking Outlook rather than Outlook Express, and if so which version of Outlook?
BT have been making a number of changes over the past few months.
Go to the Dialup software page and download the BTAnytime dialler software, and save it to your hard drive, Remember where you save it to Now go to Start | Settings | Control Panel | Add/Remove Software Uninstall Bt dialler Now go to Network connectionsRight click your BT connection and click Delete Now return to where you saved the downloaded dialler software (You haven't forgotten have you?) Double click it to automatically set up your connection again. Put in your username and password and off you go again

Hi guys, I've got a problem with updating the drivers for my graphics card. I bought a new game this week, but everytime I try to run it, it cause my PC to crash. I called the customer helpline and was told to run dxdiag while on the phone. I then had to give my graphics card driver number, and the person I spoke to said I needed to update my drivers. So I went onto Nvidia's website (thats who made my GC) and downloaded the drivers. I then closed all other programs and launched the update. I restarted my PC, but when I tried to run the game it still didn't work. I then ran dxdiag again, and found that the driver numbers hadn't changed. I'm very confused here, can anyone help? BTW, I'm running Win98, and my PC is well above the rec spec (1.0g athlon processor, 256mb RAM, the graphics card is Nvidia TNT2 64) TIA. Karl - Stoke - Sat Oct 26 13:14 2002 reply

Does anyone have any recommendations: books or web site (print off) guides ? Richard - stourbridge - Wed Oct 23 08:02 2002 reply
The major problem with software and hardware is that so many occurences appear to be unique, and that your computer is the only one demonstrating behaviourial problems. In 9/10 of instances, this isn't the case, and a bit of research will start to pay dividends.
The best thing you can do is join a number of newsgroups or forums, such as Virtual Dr and just have a look at the questions asked, and read the replies. You will start to see patterns forming, and soon you will be able to make your own diagnoses, and be posting messages.
Sites such as computerhope and winguides are perfect for finding more obscure information.
To be fair, there is little point in printing off entire websites, simply because, if they are any good, they will run into the hundreds of pages, which means you would never find the information again. The other question I would ask is why buy a book when you have the worlds' biggest searchable reference library at your fingertips. One other important thing to learn is searching effectively, just typing in Searching the internet effectively in a search engine is a good place to start to get info, but once you have learned more advanced searching techniques, it is surprising how much more becomes relevant
One final comment is that even the most experienced users in the world have questions that they need answering, so don't be afraid to ask! Iain Wolstencroft - Accrington - Wed Oct 23 09:27 2002 reply

You need to close your virus checker and disable your screensaver then start>programs>accesories>system tools >disk defragmentor. For more info check windows help under defragmentor. This will tidy up your hard drive and make programs easier to access. You could always run a virus scan just in case!! In IE go to tools>internet options and delete temporary files and cookies and make sure you have only 2 or 3 days of history That should help john-boi - Sheffield - Sun Oct 20 22:25 2002 reply

Hi Iain, I want to burn a CD of an audio cassette, can you help, do I need special burning software ? and how do I record the audio from the cassette to my HDD. The software that I have is EZCD Creator 4 and Platinum, and Nero 5.Thanks in advance. M Westwood - Thu Oct 17 22:38 2002 reply
Nero offers a feature on Wave Editor that can convert your analogue audio to digital files and clean up the sound. You can then record these digital files onto CD-Rs to make your own customised disks. Attach an audio cable from your receiver, pre-amplifier, or cassette deck to your sound card input. Start the software by double-clicking the Nero icon on your desktop or by selecting the software by clicking Start | Programs | Ahead Nero | Nero Wave Editor. (Dragging the Nero Wave Editor file onto the desktop will put the icon there.) Click on Audio on the toolbar at the top of Wave Editor, then click on Record. A Sample Format Settings notation appears. The default should be at the CD standard of 44,100 Hz and 16-bit. If not, pick those settings in order to make your disks compliant with the CD standard. Click OK. The Recording Console appears. Adjust your input levels so that the meters do not extend into the red zone. Recording a digital signal too loudly will cause sound distortion. Input levels can be adjusted either by a control on your cassette deck or a control on your sound card software. Record the audio by clicking on the red dot on the console. Click on OK to stop the recording. A waveform appears on the Wave Editor screen. Edit the sound wave by clicking on it and moving the line cursor to your edit points. Trim the beginning of the audio by moving the line to the starting point you want and highlighting the part you want to change. (The left-most play arrow at the lower left of wave editor plays only the highlighted part. The next play arrow plays the entire file.) Choose the scissors icon to cut out the selected section or Volume to mute it or fade it in or out. Trim the end of the audio the same way. When the audio file sounds the way you want it, click File | Save As Select the folder you in which you want to save the file and select type of file as— For CD audio select PCM WAV FILE. Click Save. For MP3 audio select m3PRO, click Options. An mp3PRO screen pops up with options for the range of MP3 encoding rates that determine quality. Uncheck the Enable MP3 PRO box and select at least 128kbit for the standard MP3 quality level. Click OK, then click Save. You can convert CD files to MP3 by bringing them onto Wave Editor as .wav files and saving them as .mp3 files according to the steps above. Repeat the steps above for each audio file you want to transfer. drag these files from the folder to which you saved them and to drop them in your new compilation or use the Compile an Audio CD option

Reference ZAPRO take a look at this forum Hopefully what they suggest will help. As for your other problems, Iain may be along later to help you. Dave C - Salisbury - Thu Oct 17 22:50 2002 reply
Lawrence, It seems that you have a couple of issues Firstly, I would suggest that you follow Dave C's advice regarding ZoneAlarm and reinstalling it.
The other problems seem to be related to a faulty printer driver. I would un-install your printer and re-install it Iain Wolstencroft - Accrington - Fri Oct 18 01:14 2002 reply

Hi, I have a major problem - well to me anyway and one that's my fault. I have some Excel files that i have for my buisness which i password the shhets as well as the workbook for security purposes. the problem is that i use the same password for acertain group of files and because i haven't used these particular files for about 6 months i have forgotten the password!. I have searched the net and came up with some brute force dictionary programs but these do not work for me and do not tell me what my passwords are for the sheets & workbook. Can anyone save me please. Sammy Lewis - Ainster - Thu Oct 17 01:19 2002 reply
Hi`ya Sammy, you may try to find them in the Files & Folders from the Start Menu, go to start, find, click Files & folders, click ( Find Now ) button this is a list of everything in your H.D. it may jog your mem if you see them, OR, you could search for them from the My Computer icon on your Desktop, Right click it & choose EXPLORE hope either of these work for you. Win 98, 2nd ed. I have just added extra sdram to my machine taking it to 256mb but have experienced a decrease in performance rather than an increase. My pc has picked up the ram which was purchased from Crucial using Belearc Advisor to determine the correct type. I have shut down all apps and the majority of progs running in the background but something is eating about 40% of my memory. I was advised to add [cache] in system.ini with min and max values of 16mb and 32mb respectively but this has not aided. Any ideas? Anymore info needed? Mat Gould - Ipswich - Wed Oct 16 22:13 2002 reply
Mat, I would suggest you take a look at the reply, I gave to Bill, just a little further down this page, on Memory leaks. I would also be looking at increasing the Virtual Memory, and doing a bit of basic maintenance.
Give a shout if you're still having problems Iain Wolstencroft - Accrington - Fri Oct 18 09:47 2002 reply

I've been using Grisoft's AVG Anti-virus software (free edition) for over a year now and it regularly picks up infected files and e-mails. However I've just downloaded the latest update and checked for the much-hyped Bugbear virus on their database but with no match. Does this virus go by another name, or does AVG fall short of other (subscription) anti-virus programs? Any advice would be much appreciated. I did consider e-mailing Grisoft, but presume such a query would amount to technical support, which is not available with the free edition. Thanks in advance. Update 393 had the definition for bugbear and in fact, AVG was onne of the first with a repair, as well as a special repair tool Iain Wolstencroft - Accrington - Wed Oct 16 18:41 2002 reply
