To find out how much RAM you have, go to Start | Settings | Control Panel, Click the System icon, and look on the General Tab.
To change Language for Word, Open up Word , click Tools | Language In the Mark language applet, if not already highlighted, scroll down to the version of English you require and double click it. Hello there, you geniuses! I'm a landscape student --nothing to do with computing-- desperate for help with the web-survey I am designing just now for my research. I know some html and I'm learning to paste ready JavaScript into my stuff. I've got my form ready and working. My problems: 1. How to make my questions come one at a time, in a new window or page, the next being displayed once the respondent clicks 'next'? And then how do I get a single response e-mail from each respondent in the end? 2. Statistics require the questionnaire to have 4 different versions, shown consecutively each time a respondent starts, i.e. guy A gets version 1, next guy B gets 2, C gets 3, D gets 4, and next E gets 1 again and so on. Is it possible? Where do I find that kind of stuff --affordable to a student with a family? Cheerio Affonso Zuin - Edinburgh - Fri Feb 15 20:10 2002 reply

I have a FastCounter on my website (www.apexplayers.co.uk). I know that some magazines dissuade from using counters, but as this is a site for a club I'm in, we rely on it to get an idea of the worthiness of the site. I notice that every time someone clicks back to the index.htm page from another part of the site, the counter increases. Obviously this distorts the figures. Does anyone have any idea how I can prevent this? - I would prefer the counter to remain visible on the existing page. Allan McPhail - Cumbernauld - Sun Feb 10 11:56 2002 reply
Allan, I had exactly the same problem on my site (www.hbay.co.uk), using my ISP's generic counter. It looks as though you are using frames for your site (on the opening page, at least). The only way I managed to get round the problem was to put the counter in a frame that remains the same thoughout the site. This also gave my site the advantage of a consistent look on all the pages. I split the page into two frames, one with all the navigation links, the other with the main body of text. Every time you move around, the navigation frame remains unchanged. Unfortunately, if you try to view the source code, you won't be able to see "index.htm", as it has been programmed to immediately call up the framesets and so never goes up itself. I realise this would mean a re-write but it worked for me. The only caveat is that if you refresh, the counter will still go up by one, as a refresh is considered as another hit. Hope that helps. Steve Male - Herne Bay - Mon Feb 11 11:56 2002 reply
Allan, It appears that the counter you have is a "hit" counter rather than a "visit" counter. It doesn't appear that bcentral does a visit counter, so it may be that you will have to acquire the code from elsewhere :( Iain Wolstencroft - Accrington - Sun Feb 10 12:35 2002 reply

It rather depends how professional you want it to look. By all means use FrontPage or Dreamweaver to write the site. However, if you want to learn HOW it all works (especially useful if it falls over somewhere along the line), look up Joe Barta's web page (http://www.pagetutor.com/pagetutor/makapage/) as a start. Joe has loads of information on making your own site. And he uses Notepad. Who needs high foluting posh software? Also, look up "Teach Yourself HTML in 24 Hours", written by Dick Oliver and published by SAMS. Very good intro and in small enough chunks to get you going with a very good site of your own. As far as ISPs go, loads of people use Freeserve because, well, it's free and gives a useful chunk of free webspace (as should ALL ISPs). I use ClaraNet who gives you 20MB of space, plus very good, free tech support, which, for most people, is more than enough, so long as you don't fill it with huge (i.e. +1MB) picture files and MP3. Good luck, and enjoy the experience! Steve Male Steve Male - Herne Bay - Thu Jan 31 22:04 2002 reply

The first thing you need to have is a web host. To find a web host, type in " cheap webhosting UK" in any search engine. Almost all hosts have 24/7 access. If you are using Front Page you might want a webhost that supports FP Extensions. Try and get as much web space as you can. The first place to try would be your ISP, but may be limited on web space. Once you have that, you need to upload your site to the host. Have a look at this site http://www.coloradoguestranch.com/ support/manual_ftp.shtml There is a tutorial on how to use it. Go to this site for WS FTP, the most commonly used, as mentioned in the article http://www.ipswitch.com/ downloads/index.html (Click on the LE link at the bottom for the freeware version) Your host will provide you with the necessary usernames and passwords. Generally, logs are only available on paid webhosts (by that I mean ones where you pay via dial up or actually pay to host your site - generally the latter I think) I have never heard of a free host like tripod supplying them. Still, this doesnt mean it cant be done ;) If you get a hit counter, they quite often give you stats with them, for free! Bravenet do a good one. Stats are basically the IP addresses of your visitors and the times they have visited. Also they can tell you the operating system, screen resolution etc of your visitors and where in the world they come from including their ISP. my site black coffee http://coffeeaddict.cjb.net is all about free web stuff on the net, so why not take a visit and look under webmaster resources for a list of counters Site meter (http://sm6.sitemeter.com/default.asp) is a good one that I use on my index page Dunc - worcs - Sun Feb 10 21:18 2002 reply
Tripod. Each time someone visits your site, an entry is made in the log files to show a little about them which is useful. A guestbook however is a better bet. Nick Cheesman - Alton - Fri Jan 11 15:44 2002 reply
I've created a website for a friend who's a freelance lighting designer (www.markwaites.co.uk). He's really happy with the site and is hoping to pick up some extra work from it. However, we notice the hit counter is going up so people are obviously viewing it, but is there any way of finding out WHO is viewing his website? Nothing sinister, just that if we knew WHO then he could perhaps contact them and see if they are looking for his services as a lighting designer. Is this possible at all? The Black Queen - London - Mon Jan 07 05:20 2002 reply
It could be worth looking at a script similar to a mailing list, where visitors enter their emails and you get a list of these. Potentially you could have an automatic email sent out.... don't ask me how, but might be worth looking into. Dave - Fri Jan 11 21:59 2002 reply
You need to get hold of the logs for your site and you can obtain this only from your ISP. They may want to charge you for the privilage. Alternatively, get a guestbook. Hi Kingsley, I'm not quite sure what you mean by 'I don't want my WebPages(html) to cached on any ISP cache servers'? If you have a web site hosted on your ISP server then all the files (HTML, GIF, JPEG, etc.) will remain on the server until such time as you change and/or delete them. Otherwise there wouldn't be a web site to visit ;-( However, if you mean you don't want your pages cachéd on, let's say my computer when I view your web site, then I can help you. You should insert the following code into the of your HTML document along with the other tags; <*META http-equiv="pragma" content="no cache"*> this will force browsers to reload that page from scratch every time someone lands on it and will not be cachéd on the hard drive. This isn't fool proof, some older browsers may not recognise the command. [You need to remove the '*' at either end keeping the < >'s - I had to insert them to interupt the code here otherwise the browser would hide it thinking it was code for this page]. I would advise caution however. If you put the tag on all your pages you may soon lose any 'regular' visitors as they will soon get bored with waiting for returned-to-pages to fully reload, especially if there are images involved. Adieu, TFC Andrew - West Yorkshire - Sat Dec 22 16:52 2001 reply

Hi Jim, The way I'd go about that is to create a sub-directory called 'about' therefore the URL would be 'www.mysite.com/about/'. Having done that create the first page in the new directory and save it as 'index.htm'. Anyone entering the URL will land on that page, from there you'd create whatever pages you want, almost a sub-site if you like, you can always insert links to the rest of your site. So i used a function on Microsoft Photodraw 2000 V.2 where you send a picture to frontpage 2000 and it creates a thumbnail and a link to the picture (at least thats what it said) But, the link it creates to the picture is (for example) file:///C:/WINDOWS/TEMP/PhotoDraw280.jpg Which, if i'm not mistaken, is a temporary link, to my computer so no one other tha me can see it. So my question is how do i rectify this. At the moment i've made each individual picture its own webpage eg. photo.htm but this is taking up to much room on the limited space i have. Luke Skinner - Tue Dec 11 17:37 2001 reply
You are making more work than is necessary for yourself by doing it the way you are. All you need to do is insert a picture in Frontpage 2000, then using your 'Pictures' toolbar (at the bottom of your screen almost) click on the 3rd button in from the left. This should be called auto-thumbnail when your mouse is over it. Your picture should then be thumbnailed and linked. Finally click on the preview tab to ensure it worked. I have a webcam page on our family website. The system is set to update every minute or so but the page will only update if the viewer refreshes their browser. Anyone know a way (or the HTML code) that forces a webpage to auto-refresh?? Dave Haigh - Lincoln - Thu Dec 06 13:43 2001 reply

In the website I am designing on one of the pages I have to put a massive list/table (over 44 pages in Word) and I need to do something so the page will load and open in a reasonable time (not 10 mins!!) can anyone suggest anything? Farrah Slater - London - Tue Dec 04 00:29 2001 reply
If it is just a list you could make it a download. CynetBefore - Burnley - Sat Feb 23 13:01 2002 reply
If you must have it all on a single page then splitting it up into seperate tables will mean than the reader can start reading whilst it is still loading. Nick Cheesman - Alton - Mon Dec 10 09:18 2001 reply
Why not put them in alphabetical order with a page per letter and an link page? and if the page is still too long, either insert bookmarks or divide it again with a link from the first page of the letter. Just a suggestion, maybe the real webmasters could suggest an alternative! Iain Wolstencroft - Accrington - Wed Dec 05 22:41 2001 reply
I am using Frontpage to design my websites. I've finally worked out how to upload my MP3s onto my web host but when you click on my webpage for the MP3 file it goes to another page to download the MP3. I don't want it to do this - I want it to stay on the current page and just bring up the dowload box for the MP3. I can't work out how to do this - can anyone else help who has had experience of Frontpage 2000? Cheers. Maria - London - Mon Nov 26 07:06 2001 reply
The link you are using must be pointing to another page. Set it to point to the MP3 itself and all will be well. Nick Cheesman - Alton - Thu Nov 29 09:11 2001 reply
Well, I've uploaded my MP3 onto the internet as was suggested to an earlier post of mine, so it's now being hosted on Tripod with the rest of my website. So when I link to the MP3 in it's current location on Tripod, of course the page goes to a Tripod to download from there. What I want it to do is to stay on my webpage and just bring up the download box. Before that, I was linking to the file on my hard drive and, of course, that wasn't working as it was on my hard drive. This really is VERY confusing...HELP! Hi again Maria. I'm not quite sure what's happening here. Can you post your web site address and I'll take a look. Nick Nick Cheesman - Alton - Mon Dec 10 09:20 2001 reply
Thanx for your help again Nick. This is SO confusing. I've since updated my website and now the soundfile pages go to "page unavailable" again and I don't know why or what I'm doing wrong! :-( Okay, the address is www.williambyrne.co.uk and you then need to click the Multimedia page. Thanx again...Maria Maria - Lon - Mon Dec 17 05:28 2001 reply
Hi Maria. Web servers are case-sensitive. Your page name will have been converted to lower case when you uploaded so you need to change it in your web page to all lower case then try again. Then I'll take another look (this may be the same reason why your MP3's are not working). Hope this helps. Nick Nick Cheesman - Alton - Mon Jan 07 12:30 2002 reply
Hi Maria, Hope this helps: Once you have typed in or inserted the picture that is the link to the mp3 file highlight it and then right click on it. Then click on hyperlink in the menu that pops up. Where you type in the URL's for hyperlinks there should be 4 buttons to the right. Click on the button that looks like a folder with a magnifying glass over it. You will then be prompted to select a file so find the one you need. Then press ok, and that should be it. Karl - Stoke - Mon Dec 17 23:17 2001
