Seeking help for a friend please, his favorites have disappeared from IE. I thought he could try re - importing from Docs and Settings fav folder, that did not work, Import Wzard could not locate folder, that seemed a problem I could not advise on.
Have found two answers elsewhere but the more feasible involves going into the registry which my friend will definitely be reluctant to do. I wouldn't trust me in there never mind him.

Double check that they haven't been hidden
Open Windows Explorer Go to Tools | Folder Options | View. elect Show hidden files and folders. Then go to C:\Documents and Settings\User Name\Favorites. Right click and click unhide.

I told him to try that first of all Iain, the folder was hidden, it was us trying something beyond this which failed.

This was the advice picked up from an FAQ in a search, am waiting to see if friend is prepared to have a go in the Registry, doubtful he will but may have to if there's no other route.
"My Internet Explorer favorites disappeared. How do I restore them? The problem is typically due to a problem with the registry. As long as you are careful, you can edit it. Select:
start -> run
and enter regedit Next, browse through to: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Shell Folders\ Double click on Favorites and update the data field. If your machine is running the CS image, you'll want it to be something like: z:\profile_\Favorites assuming that z: is the drive mapped to your home directory.
If it is a standalone install, it's likely to be something like: c:\PROFILES\userid\Favorites
Next, you'll also need to update: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\User Shell Folders\ If your machine is running the CS image, you'll want the data field for Favorites to be something like: z:\profile_\Favorites For a standalone machine, it'll be something like: %userprofile%\Favorites."

Have posted the question to him. Unfortunately he's based up in the Highlands of Scotland so we are trying to resolve this by e-mail.
Will be back as soon as the pigeon lands.

Try this, I suggest you create the reg file for him
Go to Start | Run Type in Notepad
Copy and paste the following in green to notepad
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Shell Folders] "Favorites"="C:\Documents and Settings\Tony\Favorites"
Click File | Save As Change Save as type to All Files Give the file the name favret.reg
Send the file to him and ask him to double click it Tell him to say yes when it asks to merge
Restart the computer
Note this reg file will only work if your username is Tony , though it can be modified

Me create the file for him! Iain, thanks for your confidence, will give it a go. If successful this will be another one for the book.
Your help as always, most appreciated.

Actually it started off as a telephone call for help - just as I was about to siesta after Sunday lunch - as you do - well I do anyway. 90 minutes the call lasted - no siesta after all.
Yes I'm thankful for e-mail Iain!

Created the file as per, sent it off with double click. instructions. Reply back - "nothing happens, it won't open".
Advised saving the file to another folder out of the mailbox then double click on it there. Reply, "It won't open there either".
Jings me bob and Hoots Mon! - what can I do with this lad Iain?
Time for bed, I'm off, tomorrow's another day.

It's taken a while but my friend in the Highlands has finally resolved his missing bookmarks. He's e-mailed, with the cause but unfortunately no how and why. Only to say it was Microsoft's Anti Spyware which caused the loss, I can only assume he'd ticked and removed something without realising what it was.
Thought I'd mention this, don't like to walk away from a thread especially when help has been offered. Very bad manners.
