Is there such a thing as a free 0800 isp? As I am away from home and need internet access from the hotel I'm staying at and don't want to be charged an arm and a leg.

Regarding your comments about staying at a hotel. Do you mean that you will be using your PC in the room through the hotels switchboard? IF so then most hotel companies charge even for 0800 numbers so best to check it out first.

Having faced the same problem I found that using hotel phones cost an arm and a leg. Although a lot slower it was actually cheaper to use my mobile connected to the laptop to send and receive emails. Surfing wasn't really an option at the sort of speeds available over the normal mobile network although that should not be a problem with the latest systems.
Do you know that we're all in line for succession to the throne? Really?

Have you considered using a Data Card to access the internet while away from home?
I use the Orange 3G Mobile Office Data Card< . . . . this link shows all relevant information on one page, where 'Orange's' web site covers the same subject on a few pages.
The download speeds shown are a theoretical maximum, and in my experience, the speeds are much slower, and of course geographical locations are a major factor.
This card uses '3G' technology when available, and drops down to 'GPRS' should the connection in your area, (even on the move) suddenly change.
Orange's policy is you can return the 'Data Card' during the first 14 days after purchase. This was a factor when I got mine, and you don't need a reason to do so.
So if the card doesn't perform well, or you don't like the 'Orange' logo, take it back.
Of course you can't foresee the cards performance in different locations so it may work well 'here' but not 'there'.
It is perhaps advisable to download a Usage meter to monitor your monthly usage such as the Tautology Bandwidth Meter .
The data card does allow you monitor the usage of the particular session your on at the time, but not the cumulative sessions for the month.
The downside of this type of internet access is that if you go over your chosen tariff's limit, you will pay dearly for each MB over.
