Just today my Firefox would not work and windows suggested a chkdsk.
I did this as well as restarting, FF now worked but I had lost my plugins and all my bookmarks.
So then I did a system restore from yesterday when everything was fine but still I have no bookmarks, nor does the backward button work. The vertical scroll bar has also gone missing.
Any Ideas ?

You could try uninstalling FF via Add or Remove Programs and reinstall it from the Setup file which you probably still have. If necessary you can re-import your bookmarks from IE and re-install your plug-ins. Also, you could go to the Firefox forums and post your problem there, they're the experts! Madeline.

According to the experts this is what you need to do, in summary.
1. Close Firefox; completely. Open the Task Manager and kill any firefox.exe processes, if still running.
2. Browse to your Profile Folder [in windowsXP under C:\Documents and Settings\%username%\Application data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\ randomname.default\ ] and delete the file parent.lock, if it exists.
3. Run the Profile Manager [in windows: Start | Run | type firefox.exe -p | ok] and choose the default profile.
If the Profile Manager does not appear, repeat without skipping step 2

But it did not work for me. I have reimported my bookmarks from IE and I am in the process of starting again. I suppose though like most people I did not backup my bookmarks.
On the plus side spellbound now works, which after about 10 attempts before I could never get to work.

Sounds as if you've more or less got it sorted, despite the complicated advice from the experts! I haven't backed up my Bookmarks either. Spellbound's always worked fine for me, I find it slightly better than ieSpell in IE. A couple of times I've had problems with FF and I've just uninstalled and reinstalled it and everything was still there, Bookmarks, extensions etc. Madeline.
