using AOL on Telewest

my friend has just bought a 2nd hand pc with xp.the previous owner used AOL with a BT line.
my friend has Telewest and just put in a trial AOL cd.he loaded his aol cd ok but can't connect.his pc rings different numbers but no luck.
he says he doesnt hear the 'internet connection noise'.
someone removed the previous AOL settings.

whats up with it ?
