Exporting data to new ISP
      #193184 - Thu May 26 2005 07:00 AM

Greetings! I am finally, completely, and forever dumping AOL. My intention is to combine local cable and 'net access which will save me a few $$ and many headaches due to dealing with AOHELL.
Here's the yell for help question(s): could some kind comp-genius tell me how to export 3 AOL address books worth of addresses, favorites lists from same and, most important, filing cabinet data to the new ISP?
Likely necessary info: I currently use AOL 8.0, Windows XP and, if it's relevant, a dialup connection. Connection status will change with the new ISP.
Everybody has a reason for hating AOL. Here's one of mine: we here in Lower Lake CA have a grand total of ONE local (i.e., non-toll) number that is used by every AOL subscriber in Lower Lake, Clearlake, Glenhaven, and Clearlake Oaks, CA. Newsflash: one number is not enough.
AOL claims the telephone company has to issue additional numbers. Phone company states AOL has to request the number. After dealing with this "It's not us, it's them" circular passing the buck, also other annoyances such as having "Helpers" on the phone either yell at me or hang up on me when I have the nerve not to understand their accents, being outright lied to as to purported problem solutions, etc., I have finally had enough.
Today was particularly joyous (NOT). I spent hours being disconnected after mere seconds of getting on line, calling many times to AOL America 1 888 346 3784 which of course rolls over to a thickly-accented person in India...begging for help, being given several vastly different "solutions," none of which worked.
One uhhh, gentleman told me it would be perfectly okay to delete my ZoneAlarm firewall, and for some reason he did not believe my protests that doing such would leave my poor defenseless machine open to invaders. He was wrong and I didn't have to try it to prove my opinion.
I now am the proud owner of a multi-hundred $$s machine on which I can play Solitaire. No or very rare access to email, extremely slow connection speed thanks to the fixit of a helper on the phone, and the afore-mentioned all too often dumpoffs. Disheartening to be in the middle of doing something only to hear a "Goodbye" in such mournful tones I am tempted to search my livingroom for a coffin.
Anyone who can lead the compdunce here through the exporting minefield will be the beneficiary of "Bless You's" daily flung heavenward.

Thanks in advance,

Jenny Morgan

You would do better posting in the ISP or general PC forum rather than this one. This one is just about the forum it self.l

You might want to thikn about editing your post to remove your email address as well.

I don't have AOL (Thank God) but I can access the page using Firefox and NTL. Presumably there is no way of bypassing the AOL block using AOL as your ISP? It's a pretty neat system where you get an ISP who won't let you log onto a site that shows you how to leave them. That's some catch, that Catch 22.

lmao, that beats it all, talk about big brother!!

Well, here's the LONG way around

If they are going to block CNET, then the lawyers at AOL will earn their salaries!!

Before we got a PC and had Internet access, we were seriously considering using AOL. In the end, we didn't, thank goodness. It seems very problematic. My spell checker doesn't recognise AOL; it wants me to replace it with GAOL!
