Having read the current issue of Web User, I decided to take advantage of the Gold Award given to the free offer of Zone Alarm. I've been through the process and two things stand out. The free offer, appears to be for 30 days only and secondly, I am a silver surfer with an extremely limited knowledge of the internet, and I have to put my hand up and say, I still am unsure if I've done everything correctly and that I may encounter problems in the coming days and that I may regret taking up the offer................only time will tell. No doubt if things do go mysteriously wrong, I will be able to uninstall it............won't I ?.

You've downloaded the wrong version, Colin,
You want to be downloading the one in the middle here
There is a tutorial on how to set it up actually within ZoneAlarm, just click help

I have just un-installed ZoneAlarm as I was of the opinion that it was causing problems when closing down.............................we shall see now if it was the cause.

I used the free version of zone alarm it is good but everytime I switched on the computer the dial up box kept appearing which I found was a glich that came with it. I got fed up with it so I went to norton. On uninstalling zone alarm I found zone labs left a few files I can't seem to get rid of, so if you manage to clear them or if anyone knows how to do it safely let me know

I too found Zone Alarm impossible to uninstall. I think it changes some vital file and then either deletes it altogether on uninstall or fails to change it back. I seem to remember something about "true vector" something or other. In the end I just had to keep Zone Alarm.
It does it's job though, and from what one reads it seems it does it better than many of it's rivals, and with fewer problems. Just disable the alerts or you'll be forever closing them and never get a chance to do any work. I think there's something harmless called a "pulse" or "heartbeat" or something coming from your ISP, and it picks up on every one of these if you let it, giving millions of false alarms.
Some people have stopped the dial-up box appearing on every boot by disabling auto updates. That didn't work for me, but I discovered, by accident, that moving your Temp folder to another drive or partition (if you've got one) cures the problem. It also stops IE bringing the dial up box up automatically, but that's not too much of a pain. Just go to Start, Settings, Dial-up networking and do it from there.
If you fancy moving your Temp folder, you'll need to edit your autoexec.bat file, which you'll find in the root directory of your C: drive.
First, create the new Temp folder on the drive of your choice, then open autoexec.bat in Notepad, changing the set temp and set tmp lines to point to your chosen drive and folder. Now, on the "Save As ..." box, choose "all file types" or you could end up with a useless file called autoexec.bat.txt, but you can get round this by renaming the original autoexec.old and then deleting the unwanted .txt extension from the new one.
Hope that lot helps.
