He's got a V.92 modem and it's the software Control Centre program that is doing this.
He needs to open the Control Centre and disable Call Alert. May be called something slightly different, but he'll know it when he sees it.

hi, this is cheggs mate that is having the problem. tried what you asked, however this hasn't helped. i have a bit more info for you, i am running xp home, my dial up isp is with aol, the modem i have is a smartlink 56k modem, whenever i connect to the net i instantly get a warning that my isp does not support modem on hold, i am given 2 options, either answe incomimg call and disconnect from the net or ignore call and resume connection, after i click ignore call, which in the caller id box it states is from an "undisclosed party", i get another box which pops up saying "resuming internet connection". Now this happens constantly(happened 12 times so far while i am trying to type this post" and is very frustrating. i hope the extra info i have will help to rectify this nippy problem, thankyou in advance...........nick

You don't have anything like BT's call waiting on you line that needs to switched off or a message on 1571 these two have been known to affect internet connection. Hope it might help

It could be down to Call Waiting if you have it.
1571 will only cause a problem when trying to connect in the first place as you will get an intermetent dial tone. This is easily cured by unchecking 'Wait for dial tone before dialing' in the connection properties.

Go to www.smlink.com and download the lastest driver for smartlink modem there.
