tesco.net webspace
      #188276 - Wed May 11 2005 08:48 PM

Does anyone know of any errors people have been having with tesco.net free webspace?

I have been trying to access my webspace via ftp for some time now and have
been receiving nothing but errors.

I have entered the correct server (homepages.tesco.net) the correct username and password into the recommended ftp program WS_FTP.

This is the error log:

WINSOCK.DLL: WinSock 2.0
WS_FTP LE 5.08 2000.01.13, Copyright © 1992-2000 Ipswitch, Inc.
- -
connecting to 62.253.166.183:21
Connected to 62.253.166.183 port 21

! Connection failed homepages.tesco.net

I have tried to use WS_FTP to connect to other ftp accounts on other servers
and it has connected fine, so the problem is either at their end, or the login
details they have given me are incorrect.

When I first tried to use the ftp to my tesco.net account it worked and could
connect fine, but then all attempts after met with the above error. When trying
to access my webspace through the url homepages.tesco.net/[username] it results in
a 403 - permission is denied error.

can anyone help?

ta,
deb

Might be worth doublechecking your settings at the Tesco.net setup pages

According to them, there is nothing wrong with the tesco.net status

Have you recently updated your firewall or installed SP2?

It might be worth checking your firewall settings

could you post the url of your webpage to ascertain that in fact your webpage is freely available to everyone on the Internet.

Also, it is possible that the file you uploaded is index.htm and the server is looking for index.html

and you haven't done any work to it before now?

because all I get is "The domain name ahappytails.com has been registered by NetBenefit for one of our clients".

If you have already uploaded pages to your site BEFORE now, it appears that the FTP server is down despite what they have said

Hopefully they will fix the server you are on, you won't get an answer tonight, they don't work 24/7

The site is up and running, well it is for me. I checked loads of pages not just the homepage.

Debs,

I have had exactly the same problem trying to connect to my website www.evenToddlersNeedFathers.com which is hosted by homepages.tesco.net

I have joined the forum specifically to find out whether you have found a solution?

This has been an on-going problem for the last few weeks as I am not able to update my website!

Have you found the answer yet?

kip

Hi kip - Welcome to the forum

Unfortunately, this thread is somewhat old. deb appears to have joined and posted all with in a day or two (11/12 May 2005) and hasn't returned to say what was or wasn't useful (which is regrettable, but alas not uncommon) - And I doubt she will return to answer your question.

You may wish to start a new thread with your query and hope someone is willing to assist.

Dear 'fat' Controller,

Thanks for this. I was pointed to your website by a freind and so far I have found it very easy to use. Lets hope I get an answer to my problem!

Kip

I think perhaps your web site should be hosted by a paid for provider.
Yes I know paid for means forking out a few bob, but your site is of a special importance and admire you for bringing the even Toddlers Need Fathers to everyone's attention.
Free providers such as Tesco are not duty bound to keep their web space fully operational 100% of the time, and you can/will suffer down times more often than the paid for varieties.
When your paying a provider to host your site, they are obliged to keep the site operational with minimum down time otherwise their customers would go else where.
Just my thoughts on the matter.
