at the beginning of December I'm dumping my present isp (ntl) because there TV service is useless so the phone line will be going as well so i will be looking for an isp who will allow 2 pc's from 1 account the isp software should be able to run on a Pentium 3 500MHz with 64 ram ,so AOL are out already as 1/ it doesn't allow 2 pc's full internet access from 1 account 2/ AOL 8 needs a minimum of 128 ram 3/there customer support is like ntl 's useless
so any help in finding another isp would be appreciated

Can you get BT broadband?
If you use a router, virtually any ISP will do the trick
you can have a look at ISPreview

In that case you will want to use the true networking option, and use one of the PC as a server. The only disadvantages is that if the Server PC has to be on if the client PC wants access. You'll need two NICs and a crossover cable for a very basic network

maybe i should have made it clearer there is no need for the pc's to be networked as only 1 will be on line at any 1 time because even isp's that say 24/7 dial up have their tricks to limit your browsing time and with my present isp 2 pc's is the way round it which is what I'm looking for

If I understand you correctly, it's no problem at all. I dual boot without any problems, isn't this, (virtually) the same as having 2 PCs, i.e. I only use one OS at a time?

In that case all you need is a triple adapter, one for your phone, and two for your pcs

I still don't see how this will get round the ISP's limit on the amount of time you can keep a live connection. If PC No. 1 is disconnected by the ISP after, say, 4 hours then you simply redial. You can't have PC No. 2 on standby to pick up the lost connection. In any case the ISP measures the connection by monitoring the telephone number from which the connection is created, not the PC itself. Swapping to a second machine won't change the T/P number.

I don't see the point in this either.
Just pick an ISP that doesn't limit your monthly online time.

with NTL it's been working for me after 7 hours using 1 pc you constantly get the white screen but switching to another pc (same phone line) works for another 7 hours giving a true 24/7 connection

Thats sounds more like your Temporary Internet Files folder needs emptying. If the ISP were cutting your connection neither computer would have access. The telephone connection would be cut.

I'm with you there Jonny. In any case the NTL User Policy (see this link) is that 'normal' home use is restricted to 1 gig downstream daily, not to the length of time that anyone is on line. I clearly don't know how much downloading is done but if it is 7 hours at a time then the Temp folder will almost certainly be getting full and the 1gig limit might be close.

i think you wouldn't have a hope of d/loading 1Gb in 7 hours on a dial up.
