My telephone installation was put in 25 years ago when the bungalow was rewired.I cannot see a master socket but there is a cnnection box in the loft where all the phone cables seem to join the bt incomer.Would this have any effect on the broadband.

I am sick and tired of complaining to BT about the poor performance of my broadband.
Although I am paying for 2Mb my speed today using the BT speed tester is 150kbits.
I wa also intrigued to read that my connection is configued at 152 kbits - whatever that means.

i did fax the BT chairmans and withing twp hours my speed increased to 1.8Mb - for three days

The service is disgraceful - and I worked for BT for 40 year s

Hi

Make for an interesting read. Currently have my master socket downstair and I am using a wireless router. Have problems with it disconnecting frequently, im told it something to do with Noise Margin. Would it be help if I was to have the master socket moved into the same room as the PC or am I just lining the BT Director's pockets .

Phil

Sounds like you are on a long line and therefore your router is having problems "hearing" the adsl signal properly. If you have an IP profile of 152 kbps then you have a low SNR Margin. There are perhaps several things you can do yourself to try and help remedy the situation. - See Low SNR.

If you are suffering frequent disconnects then yes it will be because your SNR has dropped too low.
Not sure about moving the master socket. But since you are using wireless can you not plug the router directly into the master socket where that is located now?

Try testing from the test socket behind the master socket and see if your line stats improve.

hi,i recently switched to option 3 with bt broadband,,im using the bt home hub which is connected directly into the master socket,,the hub manager says its recieving 8096 Kbps yet on numerous dsl speed tests i am only gettin 1500Kbps,bt said the problem is with me,i have run various virus and spyware scans yet that finds nothing,,they suggested a programme on my pc could be slowing the speed down,,any idea what programmes are known to effect speeds in such a high manner?

bt home hub is connected directly from the master
im connected to the pc with the ethernet cable
im running windows xp media edition (service pack 2)
avg 7.5 ( full ) is the anti virus im using
i have disabled windows firewall

uninstalled various unused programmes yet im still recieving poor download speeds and slow speed opening web pages

My aunt has a problem where she cant use her bt landline whilst her aol broadband is plugged into the phone line. Bt came out and checked the line and said it was fine and told her to speak to aol. Aol said she needed new filters and that hasn't worked. Her pc is running on windows xp and everything was ok until 2 weeks ago. Any ideas please?

Problem solved, i found a filter on her line to the computer that hadn't been changed.

I recently updated my broadband to 8meg with Orange, everything seemed great at first, i mean yeah i wasn't getting MAX speed but my internet was fast nontheless. However, one day my internet just..stopped working, i tried everything and it just wouldn't connect with my router (I have a 3com). The sync and online lights would not come on no matter what i tried. I connect the router to the phoneline via a cable, the line and router are 4 meters or so appart but the wire is longer. We tried using a shorter wire just to see if the sync and online lights would come on and what do you know, they did! However the ethernet cable obviously would not reach the computer with this shorter wire. We resorted to buying a wireless Belkin connector and we're back online...with download speeds of up to 15kb/s, yay! Yeah, exactly - boo. Orange claimed they were going to send us a "livebox" which i am going to phone about however, is there anyway i could save the hassle? Is the problem that the connecting wire from the phoneline to the router is too long or not high enough quality? Any help would be greatly appreciated. =)

Your results dont look too bad.
However if you are getting noise or hissing you could have a line fault.
Report a line fault to BT not a (broadband fault) insist your line is noisy intermittently.
A linesman will then go out and check your line for possible causes of noise.
Good luck!

I hope someone can help me. I want to sign up to BB with Tiscali (or is this a mistake?) from having dial-up with Clara. Clara say that it takes 30 days to effect a cancellation from them, and Tiscali's FAQ board states that to get their BB service you should allow 14 days for delivery of the hardware/software and it then takes 15 days to get you set up?

Is there a quicker way to get moved from dial-up to BB? Tiscali have already informed me that it isn't possible to switch from Clara dial-up to Tiscali BB because you can't get a MAC (I know what that is) from dial-up. Any help anyone?

Thank you thank you thank you xxxx

p.s. This post isn't really in ref. to anyone else, it's just a query. I don;t know why the re: thing came up...

The Re: came up because you added your post on the end of someone else's rather than start your own thread.

To answer your question, you don't have to wait to order broadband. Having a dial up connection at the same time as broadband is not a problem and you don't need to transfer anything from one supplier to the other.

BT are currently offering to get you set up with BB in around 5-10 days. 29 days from Tiscali is ludicrous.

Thanks Graysts. Yep, realised I should've set up a new thread after I'd done this. I was hoping to avoid paying for more than one service but your advice makes sense. I'll look into it and will also find out direct from the provider I choose just how long the set up will take. Thanks again.

Hi i have had orange BB for over 1 year but recently have the same problem. Phones ok but no BB. It works from the test plug in the master socket but not from the front of the master socket. Even with all the house extensions not working. Why has this happened?

How can you get BT to test your line for Broadband from both ends. My Neighbour across the road has had Broadband since our exchange was enabled, BT says I my line is unsuitable, I have asked why, but they just say I am to far from the exchange (can't be much difference between me and my neighbour as the line comes off the same pole!) I know that I am at the extremes of getting a BB connection BUT IF MY NEIGHBOUR CAN GET IT WHY CAN'T I?

I have a 15meter RJ11 cable running from the filter at the bt master socket upstairs to my computer. will this have any effect on my speed.? As webuser issue 161 seem`s to say no but others tell me it will.

It depends on the quality of the cable. If you bought a cheap and cheerful one from your local supermarket then yes, it could have an effect. If you bought a good quality one with each individual wire wrapped separately within the core then no, it won't be a problem. After all BT send your signal down a line possibly 3 miles long. Your extra 15 metres won't matter.
